Development and evidence of validity of the HIV risk perception scale for young adults in a Hispanic-American context.

ABSTRACT: HIV/AIDS is a public health problem that is transmitted through risky sexual behavior. The literature suggests that the perception of HIV risk is a motivator for the prevention of risky sexual behaviors. There is no culturally adapted scale to assess HIV risk perception in the Hispanic-American population. The aim of this research was to develop a scale to assess HIV risk perception in Hispanic-American young adults. A cross-sectional instrumental design was used, with a sample of students from the Chilean city with the highest HIV rates. Participants (n = 524) were between 18 and 33 years old, of whom 51% were women, 84.4% said they were heterosexual and 43.7% said they had not been tested for HIV/AIDS. The final scale has 9 items and 2 dimensions: (1) perceived risk susceptibility and (2) perceived risk severity. The results showed that the identified structure provided adequate levels of reliability (? > .8) and presented evidence of validity, based on the internal structure of the test (i.e., using ESEM) and on the relationship with other variables (i.e., the sexual risk behaviors scale). In addition, the results showed strong invariance between the scores for men and women. It is concluded that the HIV risk perception scale has adequate psychometric properties to assess HIV risk perception in equivalent samples.

Project description:BACKGROUND:With the growing number of young-older adults (baby-boomers), there is an increasing demand for assessment tools specific for this population, which are able to detect subtle balance and mobility deficits. Various balance and mobility tests already exist, but suffer from ceiling effects in higher functioning older adults. A reliable and valid challenging balance and mobility test is critical to determine a young-older adult's balance and mobility performance and to timely initiate preventive interventions. The aim was to evaluate the concurrent validity, inter- and intrarater reliability, internal consistency, and ceiling effects of a challenging balance and mobility scale, the Community Balance and Mobility Scale (CBM), in young-older adults aged 60 to 70 years. METHODS:Fifty-one participants aged 66.4?±?2.7 years (range, 60-70 years) were assessed with the CBM. The Fullerton Advanced Balance scale (FAB), 3-Meter Tandem Walk (3MTW), 8-level balance scale, Timed-Up-and-Go (TUG), and 7-m habitual gait speed were used to estimate concurrent validity, examined by Spearman correlation coefficient (?). Inter- and intrarater reliability were calculated as Intra-class-correlations (ICC), and internal consistency by Cronbach alpha and item-total correlations (?). Ceiling effects were determined by obtaining the percentage of participants reaching the highest possible score. RESULTS:The CBM significantly correlated with the FAB (??=?0.75; p?<?.001), 3MTW errors (??=?-?0.61; p?<?.001), 3MTW time (??=?-?0.35; p?=?.05), the 8-level balance scale (??=?0.35; p?<?.05), the TUG (??=?-?0.42; p?<?.01), and 7-m habitual gait speed (??=?0.46, p?<?.001). Inter- (ICC2,k?=?0.97), intrarater reliability (ICC3,k?=?1.00) were excellent, and internal consistency (??=?0.88; ??=?0.28-0.81) was good to satisfactory. The CBM did not show ceiling effects in contrast to other scales. CONCLUSIONS:Concurrent validity of the CBM was good when compared to the FAB and moderate to good when compared to other measures of balance and mobility. Based on this study, the CBM can be recommended to measure balance and mobility performance in the specific population of young-older adults. TRIAL REGISTRATION:Trial number: ISRCTN37750605 . Project description:ObjectiveResearch suggests a difference in sweet taste perception between non-Hispanic black (NHB) and non-Hispanic white (NHW) adults; however, limited research has examined sweet taste perception in relation to the dietary intake of sweet products. The aim of this study was to examine sweet taste perception and the consumption of sweet foods, beverages, and sugar in NHB and NHW adults, and to evaluate whether sweet taste perception is associated with dietary intake.MethodsThis cross-sectional study examined the association between race, sweet taste perception and sweet food, beverages, and sugar consumption in healthy, NHB and NHW adults. Seven day food records were analyzed in Nutrition Data System for Research software. Intensity of sweet taste perception was tested and the general labeled magnitude scale method was used to facilitate group comparisons. Independent t tests, Mann-Whitney tests, and Pearson correlations were used to assess associations.ResultsParticipants were NHB (n = 98) and NHW (n = 90) adults, 41 ± 1 y of age (mean ± SEM) with energy intake of 2271 ± 53 kcal. Body mass index was higher in NHBs than in NHWs (36 ± 1 versus 32 ± 1 kg/m2, P = 0.048), but no differences were observed in age, energy consumption, or total sugar intake. Sweet taste perception rating (median [interquartile range] NHB: 73.5 [63.9-83], NHW: 52.1 [46.4-57.7]; P = 0.001) and added sugar intake (NHB: 39.4 g/1000 kcal [36.3-42.4], NHW: 30 g/1000 kcal [26.7-33.4]; P < 0.001) were greater in NHB. Perceived sweet taste intensity was positively associated with consumption of servings of sweet products among NHBs (R2 = 0.057, P = 0.018) but not NHWs (R2 = -0.012, P = 0.314).ConclusionsNHBs have a higher intensity of sweet taste perception than NHWs. The positive association of sweet taste perception and sweet product consumption in NHBs suggests that a higher intensity of sweet taste perception may be associated with an increased proportion of energy consumption from added sugars.

Project description:The health risk of the coronavirus pandemic is age-specific. The symptoms of a COVID-19 infection are usually mild in the healthy population below the age of 65; however, the measures laid down to prevent the spread of the virus apply typically to the whole population. Hence, those who have a low risk of severe symptoms face a social dilemma in cooperating and complying with the safety measures: Cooperating in preventing the spread of the disease is good for society but comes with individual costs. These costs provide an incentive not to cooperate with the safety measures. In this paper we analyze via structural equation modelling a sample of young adults (N = 510) who were surveyed right after the end of the first lockdown period in Switzerland. We investigate why and to what extent they cooperated in preventing the epidemic by following the recommendation to stay at home as much as possible. We hypothesize that those respondents who perceive themselves to be personally at risk, or who have relatives belonging to the risk group, complied more often with the safety measures as compared to those without severe risks. Cooperating should also be linked to individuals' pro-social orientation. Furthermore, we hypothesize that those who believe that the virus is dangerous for society or who have a personal interest in protection show higher support for the general safety measures. Our empirical results show that compliance with the coronavirus social distancing measures was generally very high during the first lockdown. Although young adults perceived themselves to be at low personal risk, they still believed that the virus is dangerous for society. Those who had a personal interest in staying at home because they had relatives belonging to the risk group complied more often with the safety measures. Overall, the results suggest that the support of the preventive measures is the most important promoter of cooperation to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
