Project description:Delivering physical activity in cancer care requires knowledge, competence, and specific skills to adapt the exercise program to the patients' specific needs. Kinesiology students could be one of the main stakeholders involved in the promotion of physical activity. This study aims to investigate the knowledge, perception, and competence about exercise in patients with oncological disease in a sample of students attending the Sports Science University. A total of 854 students (13% response rate) from four Italian universities completed the online survey between May and June 2021. About half of the study participants identified the correct amount of aerobic (44%) and strength (54%) activities proposed by the American College of Sports Medicine for patients with cancer. Almost all the students recognized the importance of physical activity in cancer prevention (96%), in the management of cancer before surgery (96%), during anticancer treatments (84%), and after therapies completion (98%). On the contrary, they reported a lack of university courses dedicated to cancer diseases, psychological implications, and prescription of physical activity in all types of cancer prevention. Overall, few students felt qualified in delivered counseling about physical activity and individual or group-based exercise programs in patients with cancer. Logistic regression revealed that the students attending the Master's Degree in Preventive and Adapted Physical Activity were more likely to have knowledge and competence than other students. The present study suggests that kinesiology universities should increase the classes and internships about exercise oncology to train experts with specific skills who are able to adequately support patients in their lifestyle modification.

Project description:The dataset provides large-scale assessment data of school students' awareness (12 items), skills (11 items) and attitudes (09 items) regarding global citizenship in Vietnam. The questionnaire was built based on UNESCO's key learning outcomes for global citizenship education [1], criteria, scales and ideas for global citizens [2], [3], [4] and adapted to Vietnam's education context by experts and consultants. The survey sample was collected by cluster sampling method. Six provinces and cities, presenting for three main economic-social regions in Vietnam, were selected. In each city or province, we chose three districts in both advantage and disadvantage areas. In each district, one primary school, one lower secondary school and one upper secondary school joined the survey. The survey was conducted in May 2019 with responses from 2069 students, of whom 679 primary students (grade 4 and 5), 673 lower secondary students (grade 9) and 717 upper secondary students (grade 10 and 11). The data are presented with mean, standard deviation, minimum, maximum and range of students' responses to their perception, attitudes and behaviors concerning various themes of global citizenship education. In future, the dataset can be used for cross-national comparative studies on global citizenship to inform policymakers, educators and conduct further investigations global citizenship.

Project description:ObjectiveThis study aimed to evaluate the perceptions of third-year dental students regarding the application of ergonomic principles in the transition between preclinical and clinical training in Restorative Dentistry.MethodsWe conducted a qualitative observational cross-sectional study. The sample consisted of forty-six third-year dental students at São Paulo State University (Unesp), School of Dentistry, Araraquara. Data was collected using an individual interview recorded on a digital voice recorder. A script containing questions related to the process of adaptation of students to clinical care with a view to ergonomic work posture was used. Data analysis was based on the quali-quantitative technique of Discourse of the Collective Subject (DCS), using Qualiquantisoft®.ResultsMost students (97.80%) perceived the need for an adaptation period in the transition from the preclinic to the clinic regarding ergonomic posture requirements; a part of them (45.65%) claimed that they still could not adapt, primarily due to the difference between the laboratory and clinic in the workstation (50.00%). Some students suggested longer preclinical training in a clinical environment to facilitate this transition (21.74%). The dental stool (32.60%) and the dental chair (21.74%) were the external factors that contributed most to making this transition difficult. The difficulty of the restorative dentistry procedure (10.87%) also interfered with posture. Additionally, the most challenging ergonomic posture requirements in the transition period were maintaining 30 to 40 cm between the patient's mouth and operator's eyes (45.65%), positioning the patient in the dental chair correctly (15.22%), and working with the elbows close to the body (15.22%).ConclusionMost students perceived the need for an adaptation period in the preclinical transition to the clinic, attributing difficulties to adopt the ergonomic posture requirements, to use the workstation and to perform the procedures on real patients.

Project description:ObjectivesBreast cancer is the most common cancer among women all around the world. Today, in addition to factors including hormones and genetics that are involved in the occurrence of breast cancer, special attention is paid to the role of social and non-medical determinants of health. This study aims to explore the perception of Social Determinants of Health (SDH) in women with breast cancer.DesignQualitative study design with a conventional thematic analysis approach.SettingThe study was conducted in Tehran, Iran, between December 2021 and February 2023.Participants19 women with breast cancer were selected through purposeful and snowball sampling with maximum variation. Sampling continued until data saturation was reached.Primary and secondary outcome measuresThe study categorised the extracted codes from interviews into three main categories and 12 subcategories related to SDH in women with breast cancer.ResultsThe study identified factors such as personal and family health records, health behaviours and lifestyles and medical screening and follow-up as key themes in the perception of SDH among women with breast cancer. The main categories were also categorised into 12 subcategories, 'including family history', 'environmental factors', 'hormonal and medicinal changes', 'metaphysical factors', 'traditional medicine-related factors', 'stress', 'body weight', 'physical activity', 'nutrition', 'smoking and tobacco use', 'screening', 'self-examination' and 'barriers to medical follow-up'. 'Near the telecommunications tower', 'Improper use of supplements', 'Being subjected to the evil eye regularly', 'Eating cold nature foods', 'Breast weight' and 'Being ashamed of the doctor' were some examples of the codes.ConclusionsParticipants identified a number of environmental, personal and cultural factors as contributing to the disease. Woman's screening behaviours were influenced by factors such as fear of disease and death, disbelief in getting sick and shame, depending on cultural context. The study suggests the need for further research to explore the impact of these factors on screening behaviours and outcomes in different cultural contexts.

Project description:BackgroundThe penetration of generic medicines in the pharmaceutical market is influenced, among others, by the consumer's attitude upon them. The attitude of students in health management and recent alumni is particularly important, as they constitute tomorrow's policymakers. The aim of our study was to assess their attitude, perception and knowledge towards generic medicines.MethodsA cross-sectional study was undertaken, involving students in Health Management and recent alumni. The ATtitude TOwards GENerics (ATTOGEN) validated questionnaire was used, which consists of 18 items, yielding 6 scales (trust, state audit, knowledge, drug quality, drug substitution and fiscal impact), with all item responses expressed on a 5-point Likert scale and higher scores denoting greater disagreement. Correlation coefficients were computed and independent sample tests were performed using non-parametrical statistical methods.ResultsA total of 1402 students were interviewed, with a female predominance (62.88%). The mean (SD) scores for the six scales of the ATTOGEN questionnaire were: Trust: 2.877 (0.940), State audit: 3.251 (0.967), Knowledge: 1.537 (0.688), Drug quality: 2.708 (0.971), Drug substitution: 3.828 (1.127) and Fiscal impact: 2.299 (0.860). Trust over generics was statistically significantly associated with all ATTOGEN scales (all p?<?0.001). In addition, the increased level of knowledge about generics was associated with recognition of the generic medicines' quality equivalence (p?<?0.001) and positive fiscal impact (p?=?0.018). Pharmacists declared having a superior knowledge of generic medicines, being more satisfied with the information they receive about them and strongly believing in drug substitution (p?<?0.001). Comparatively to other professionals, pharmacists also indicated substantial differences between branded and generic medicines more often (p?<?0.001). They also argued to a greater extent that generic medicines were invented and promoted to resolve the financial crisis of social security institutions at the expense of citizens (p?<?0.001).ConclusionsThis study demonstrated a mixed attitude of students regarding generic medicines. Trust and knowledge emerged as key factors shaping the students' attitude towards generics. Among students, pharmacists exhibited a distinct response pattern. This study underlines the importance of addressing and correcting health management students' misbeliefs about generics' quality and utility.

Project description:Undergraduate students start the acquisition of a professional identity, and begin to achieve professional values and consciousness of an ethical behavior as future health professionals. The aim of this study was describe professional values and perception of knowledge regarding professional ethics of physical therapy students. A cross-sectional study was performed. A total of 351 students participated in the study. Professional values and perception of knowledge regarding professional ethics were assessed. Ethical approval was obtained from the University Ethics Review Board. The most important value was equity, while the least one was abnegation. The second educational year showed higher scores in importance of scientific quality (P = .010 vs first year), the third year in respect for life (P = .041 vs first year, respectively), and the fourth year in respect to patient's autonomy (P = .033 vs first year). First-year students showed lower scores in perception of knowledge regarding professional ethics (P < .001 vs second, third, and fourth year), while second-year students had higher scores (P < .001 vs first and third; P = .006 vs fourth year) and no differences between third- and fourth-year students were found. Those professional values highly considered by the students were mainly shared professional values, with equity ranked highest and abnegation lowest. Furthermore, second-year students had a well-established perception of knowledge regarding professional ethics, showing significant higher scores when compared to the rest of the educational years. This is the first cross-sectional study that describes these variables among physical therapy students and it is a starting point for future. Physical therapy educators might want to take into account these findings when teaching and guiding students in developing awareness for their professional values and perception of knowledge regarding professional ethics.

Project description:PurposeThe goal of this study was to compare the knowledge and attitudes of pharmacy and medical students regarding adverse drug reactions (ADRs), as well as their perceptions of barriers to ADR reporting, in a Higher Education Commission-recognised Pakistani university.MethodsA cross-sectional study was conducted among final-year pharmacy (n=91) and medical (n=108) students in Pakistan from June 1 to July 31, 2014. A self-administered questionnaire was used to collect the data. The responses of pharmacy students were compared to those of medical students.ResultsPharmacy students had a significantly better knowledge of ADRs than medical students (mean±SD, 5.61±1.78 vs. 3.23±1.60; P<0.001). Gender showed a significant relationship to knowledge about ADRs, and male participants were apparently more knowledgeable than their female counterparts (P<0.001). The attitudes of pharmacy students regarding their capability to handle and report ADRs were significantly more positive than those of medical students (P<0.05). In comparison to pharmacy students, a lack of knowledge of where and how to report ADRs was the main barrier that medical students perceived to ADR reporting (P=0.001).ConclusionFinal-year pharmacy students exhibited more knowledge about ADRs and showed more positive attitudes regarding their capacity to handle and report ADRs than final-year medical students.

Project description:BackgroundCognitive reserve aims to explain individual differences in the susceptibility to the functional impact of dementia in the presence of equal amount of neuropathological damage. It is thought to be shaped by a combination of innate individual differences and lifetime exposures. Which determinants are associated with cognitive reserve remains unknown.ObjectiveThe objective of this study was to investigate the associations of sociodemographic, lifestyle, physical, and psychosocial determinants with cognitive reserve, and potential sex differences.MethodsThis cross-sectional study included 4,309 participants from the Rotterdam Study (mean age 63.9±10.7) between 2006-2016. Participants completed five cognitive tests and a brain MRI-scan. Cognitive reserve was defined as a latent variable that captures variance common across five cognitive tests, while adjusting for demographic and MRI-inferred neuropathological factors. The associations of potential determinants and cognitive reserve, adjusted for relevant confounders, were assessed with structural equation models.ResultsCurrent smoking (adjusted mean difference: -0.31, 95%confidence interval -0.42; -0.19), diabetes mellitus (-0.25, -0.40; -0.10) and depressive symptoms (-0.07/SD, -0.12; -0.03) were associated with a lower cognitive reserve whereas alcohol use (0.07/SD, 0.03; 0.12) was associated with higher cognitive reserve. Only smoking was associated with cognitive reserve in both men and women. Employment, alcohol use, diabetes, history of cancer, COPD, and depressive symptoms were only associated with cognitive reserve in women.ConclusionOur study found that current smoking, diabetes mellitus, and depressive symptoms were associated with a lower cognitive reserve, whereas more alcohol use was associated with a higher cognitive reserve, but with clear differences between men and women.

Project description:BackgroundIt is necessary for dental students and freshly graduated dentists to apply their education and practice to different clinical and preclinical procedures. The implant success rate and durability are high. Therefore, this study was designed to assess the level of knowledge, awareness and perception of dental students, interns and freshly graduated students regarding dental implant complications in Saudi Arabia.MethodsA cross-sectional study design using a web-based method was conducted at different dental institutions in Saudi Arabia from December 2019 to March 2020. Data were collected from all (n = 288) undergraduate students, interns and freshly graduated dentists using a pretested standardized self-administered web-based questionnaire that was prepared and circulated using a template provided by Google Forms (Google, Inc., USA). Descriptive statistics and chi-square tests were performed to analyse the data using SPSS (version 20).ResultsA total of 288 participants completed the questionnaire, with a response rate of 83.4%. Of the total participants, 37.5% showed a good level of knowledge regarding dental implant procedures, and 38.9% showed the same level of knowledge regarding implant complications. The most important cause of complications associated with dental implants was case selection, which accounted for 54.17%. Most participants (58.33%) chose massive bone loss related to implant failure as the most common late dental complication, while 26.39% chose postoperative infection as the most common early dental complication. In addition, 30.56% of the participants selected screw loosening as the most frequent mechanical complication. However, lack of implant primary stability was the most common hard-tissue implant complication. Based on aesthetic and reversible complications, restorations that were too buccal or too palatal and prosthetic-related, respectively, were the least common dental implant complications.ConclusionsThe level of knowledge among participants regarding dental implant complications differed among the institutions participating in this study. This difference reflects a significant variation that necessitates reviewing and standardizing dental implant curricula among these institutions.

Project description:BACKGROUND:Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) has become an emergent method in the therapy of several intestinal diseases, mainly in Clostridium difficile recurrence. The training of FMT in medical schools is at its beginning and in countries where FMT is only occasionally carried out, it is important to know the perception of medical students on FMT. METHODS:We undertook a survey of 3rd year medical students not exposed to official academic information on FMT in order to find out their knowledge, beliefs and attitude toward FMT. A number of 80 students were asked to fill a dedicated online questionnaire. RESULTS:52 out of 80 third year medical students anonymously filled the questionnaire (65% response rate). 34% of respondents reported to have at least a medium level of knowledge regarding FMT. The top indication for FMT identified by 76.9% was C. difficile infection; however, 60% believed FMT to be a promising therapy for a high number of conditions and while almost all respondents (98.1%) would recommend it, 88.4% would explore other options first. Colonoscopy was considered the optimal method of delivery by 42.3%. Only 39% of participants believed that patients would accept FMT, however 71% considered that a more socially acceptable name for the procedure and anonymous donors would increase acceptance rate. The risk of transmitting a disease undetected by donor stool screening procedures to the recipient was the most worrying side effect considered by 75% of respondents. 54% believed that more research is required for FMT to enter clinical practice and 55.7% of respondents would enroll patients in controlled clinical trials. CONCLUSIONS:Medical students not exposed to educational information on FMT seem to be somewhat well informed about this method and would recommend it to their patients. Students, however, need to know more on the indications of FMT.
