Synthesis of C₇₀-fragment buckybowls bearing alkoxy substituents.

ABSTRACT: Buckybowls bearing a C₇₀ fragment having two alkoxy groups were synthesized and their structural and optical properties were investigated by single crystal X-ray analysis and UV-vis spectroscopy. In the synthesis of dioxole derivative 5b, the regioisomer 5c was also produced. The yield of 5c was increased by increasing the reaction temperature, indicating that the rearrangement might involve the equilibrium between the Pd(IV) intermediates through C-H bond activation.

Cycloadditions of 1,2,3-Triazines Bearing C5-Electron Donating Substituents: Robust Pyrimidine Synthesis.

Project description:The examination of the cycloaddition reactions of 1,2,3-triazines 17-19, bearing electron-donating substituents at C5, are described. Despite the noncomplementary 1,2,3-triazine C5 substituents, amidines were found to undergo a powerful cycloaddition to provide 2,5-disubstituted pyrimidines in excellent yields (42-99%; EDG = SMe > OMe > NHAc). Even select ynamines and enamines were capable of cycloadditions with 17, but not 18 or 19, to provide trisubstituted pyridines in modest yields (37-40% and 33% respectively).

Synthesis of the C1-C52 fragment of amphidinol 3, featuring a beta-alkoxy alkyllithium addition reaction.

Project description:An advanced intermediate for the synthesis of amphidinol 3 has been prepared. A cross-metathesis reaction was used to couple the C1-C12 and C13-C26 segments. An unusual beta-alkoxy alkyllithium reagent was generated from this segment and added to a Weinreb amide to assemble the C1-C52 section of amphidinol 3. These compounds represent some of the most advanced intermediates reported to date for the synthesis of amphidinol 3.

Synthesis of N-alkoxy-substituted 2H-benzimidazoles.

Project description:Treatment of 2-nitro-N-(2-methyl-1-propen-1-yl)benzenamines with potassium tert-butoxide in tert-butanol followed by the addition of an electrophile affords N-alkoxy-2H-benzimidazoles. Electrophiles including methyl iodide, allylic bromides, propargylic bromides, benzyl bromide, and acetyl chloride gave good to excellent yields of product while 1-iodo- and 2-iodo-butane afforded very low yields.

Amplified two-photon absorption in trans-A2B2-porphyrins bearing nitrophenylethynyl substituents.

Project description:We show that peripheral nitro groups enhance the maximum two-photon absorption cross-section of trans-A(2)B(2)-porphyrins bearing two phenylethynyl substituents by more than one order of magnitude. Maximum values as high as 1000 GM result from realization of suitable conditions for effective resonance enhancement along with a lowering of the energy and intensification of the two-photon allowed transitions in the Soret region.

A facile synthetic route to benzimidazolium salts bearing bulky aromatic N-substituents.

Project description:An atom-economic synthetic route to benzimidazolium salts is presented. The annulated polycyclic systems: 1,3-bis(2,4,6-trimethylphenyl)-1H-benzo[d]imidazol-3-ium chloride (1-Cl), 1,3-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)-1H-benzo[d]imidazol-3-ium chloride (2-Cl), 1,3-diphenyl-1H-benzo[d]imidazol-3-ium chloride (3-Cl), and 1,3-di(pyridin-2-yl)-1H-benzo[d]imidazol-3-ium chloride (4-Cl) were prepared in a two-step synthesis avoiding chromatographic work-up. In the key step triethyl orthoformate is reacted with the corresponding N (1),N (2)-diarylbenzene-1,2-diamines and then further transformed in situ, by alkoxy abstraction using trimethylsilyl chloride (TMSCl), and concomitant imidazole ring closure.

Highly Regioselective Synthesis of Bisadduct[C70] Additive toward the Enhanced Performance of Perovskite Solar Cells.

Project description:The high-regioselective synthesis of bisadducts based on low-symmetry C70 has been a challenging work due to the large amount of formed regioisomers, which require tedious separation procedures for isomeric purity and block their application in different fields. Herein, we successfully obtained a novel 1, 2, 3, 4-bis(triazolino)fullerene[C70] 2 with high regioselectivity by the rigid tether-directed regioselective synthesis strategy and the corresponding molecular structure was unambiguously confirmed by single-crystal X-ray crystallography characterization. The crystal data clearly show that the addition occurs at the domain of corannulene moiety at the end of ellipse C70 as well as the 1, 2, 3, 4-addition sites located at one hexagonal ring with a [6,6]-closed addition pattern. Furthermore, 2 was applied as an additive of perovskite layer to construct MAPbI3-based regular (n-i-p) perovskite solar cells, affording the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 18.59%, which is a 7% enhancement relative to that of control devices without additive.

Synthesis of tetrasubstituted pyrazoles containing pyridinyl substituents.

Project description:A synthesis of tetrasubstituted pyrazoles containing two, three or four pyridinyl substituents is described. Hence, the reaction of 1,3-dipyridinyl-1,3-propanediones with 2-hydrazinopyridine or phenylhydrazine, respectively, affords the corresponding 1,3,5-trisubstituted pyrazoles. Iodination at the 4-position of the pyrazole nucleus by treatment with I2/HIO3 gives the appropriate 4-iodopyrazoles which served as starting materials for different cross-coupling reactions. Finally, Negishi cross-coupling employing organozinc halides and Pd catalysts turned out to be the method of choice to obtain the desired tetrasubstituted pyrazoles. The formation of different unexpected reaction products is described. Detailed NMR spectroscopic investigations (1H, 13C, 15N) were undertaken with all products prepared. Moreover, the structure of a condensation product was confirmed by crystal structure analysis.

α-DTC70 Fullerene Performs Significantly Better than β-DTC70 as Electron Transporting Material in Perovskite Solar Cells.

Project description:In this work, two new C70 isomers, α and β bis(2-(thiophen-2-yl)ethyl)-C70-fullerene mono-adducts (DTC70), were synthesized, characterized and used as electron transporting materials (ETMs) in perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Our results show that the α isomer improves both the J sc and FF values of the devices, when compared to the results for the β-isomer and to those for phenyl-C70-butyric acid methyl ester (PC71BM), used as control. Devices based on α-DTC70 achieved a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 15.9%, which is higher than that observed with PC71BM (15.1%).

Deep-red circularly polarised luminescent C70 derivatives.

Project description:Optically active fullerenes, including C60 and C70 derivatives carrying organic substituents, are used in a range of applications because of their unique spectroscopic, catalytic, and chiral recognition properties. However, their inherent photoexcited chirality is yet to be elucidated because of their very poor fluorescence quantum yield (Φf). We synthesised a new chiral C70 derivative, X70A, with 20% yield, by reacting bis-borylated xanthene with C70 in a one-step double addition reaction, followed by a successful optical resolution. The isolation of two separate X70A enantiomers was confirmed by mirror-image circular dichroism spectroscopy in the range of 300-750 nm. In toluene, the enantiomeric pair of X70A clearly revealed mirror-image circularly polarised luminescence (CPL) spectra with a high |glum| value of 7.0 × 10-3 at 690 nm. The first fullerene-based deep-red CPL of X70A should provide a new guideline for the design of chiral nanocarbon materials.

Design, synthesis, and biochemical evaluation of 1,5,6,7-tetrahydro-6,7-dioxo-9-D-ribitylaminolumazines bearing alkyl phosphate substituents as inhibitors of lumazine synthase and riboflavin synthase.

Project description:The last two steps in the biosynthesis of riboflavin, an essential metabolite that is involved in electron transport, are catalyzed by lumazine synthase and riboflavin synthase. To obtain structural probes and inhibitors of these two enzymes, two ribityllumazinediones bearing alkyl phosphate substituents were synthesized. The synthesis involved the generation of the ribityl side chain, the phosphate side chain, and the lumazine system in protected form, followed by the simultaneous removal of three different types of protecting groups. The products were designed as intermediate analogue inhibitors of lumazine synthase that would bind to its phosphate-binding site as well as its lumazine binding site. Both compounds were found to be effective inhibitors of Bacillus subtilislumazine synthase as well as Escherichia coli riboflavin synthase. Molecular modeling of the binding of one of the two compounds provided a structural explanation for how these compounds are able to effectively inhibit both enzymes. In phosphate-free buffer, the phosphate moieties of the inhibitors were found to contribute positively to their binding to Mycobacterium tuberculosis lumazine synthase, resulting in very potent inhibitors with Ki values in the low nanomolar range. The additional carbonyl in the dioxolumazine system versus the purinetrione system was found to make a positive contribution to its binding to E. coli riboflavin synthase.
