How Reproducible are Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopic Data for Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells?

ABSTRACT: Dye-sensitized solar cell (DSC) technology has been broadly investigated over the past few decades. The sandwich-type structure of the DSC makes the manufacturing undemanding under laboratory conditions but results in the need for reproducible measurements for acceptable DSC characterization. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) offers the possibility to study complex electronic systems and is commonly used for solar cells. There is a tendency in the literature to present impedance data only for one representative device. At the same time, as current density-voltage plots illustrate, measurements can vary within one set of DSCs with identical components. We present multiple DSC impedance measurements on "identical" devices prepared using two different dyes and present a statistical analysis regarding the reproducibility.

First application of benzotriazole as a dye additive to dye-sensitized solar cells: electrochemical device characterization

Project description:Dye-sensitized solar cell, known as an emergent technology, has been attracted attention around the world. It has been easily produced by a mesoporous semiconductor oxide (SO), with a dye. On the other hand, some unexpected reactions as the back-electron recombination, reducing the solar cell efficiency. The presence of some molecules to act as an oxide passivation might rise up the collection reaction rate, and enhance the photoelectrochemical solar system parameters. The molecule used as a dye additive, must effortlessly adsorb in SO and potentiate the dye deaggregation. This work aims to study the benzotriazole (BTAH) insertion in DSSC with TiO2, evaluating its capability as a passivator molecule in such PV technology. The electrochemical results showed better electrochemical energy conversion efficiency with lower resistance with BTAH at 2.0 mg mL−1, achieving a jsc = 9.92 ± 0.26, Voc = 0.770 ± 0.022, FF = 0.557 ± 0.014, ɳ = 4.26 ± 0.13 with superior electron lifetime and amazing recombination prevention. Acenaphthylene-Based Chromophores for Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells: Synthesis, Spectroscopic Properties, and Theoretical Calculations.

Project description:A set of acenaphthylene dyes with arylethynyl π-bridges was tested for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). Crucial steps for the extension of the conjugated system from the acenaphylene core involved Sonogashira coupling reactions. Phenyl, thiophene, benzotriazole, and thieno-[3,2-b]thiophene moieties were employed to extend the conjugation of the π-bridges. The systems were characterized by cyclic voltammetry and by UV-vis absorption and emission. The spectroscopic characterization showed that the last three bridges resulted in red-shifted absorption and emission spectra relative to the parent phenyl-bridged compound, in accordance with TD-DFT calculations. The phenylethynyl derivative 6a achieved a conversion efficiency of 2.51% with Voc, Jsc, and FF values of 0.365 V, 13.32 mA/cm2, and 0.52, respectively. The efficiency of this compound improved to 3.15% with the addition of CDCA (10 mM), representing the best efficiency result in this study. The overall conversion efficiency of the other aryl derivatives 6b-d proved to be significantly inferior (14-40%) to that of 6a due to a significant decrease of Jsc.

Spectroscopic detection of halogen bonding resolves dye regeneration in the dye-sensitized solar cell.

Project description:The interactions between a surface-adsorbed dye and a soluble redox-active electrolyte species in the dye-sensitized solar cell has a significant impact on the rate of regeneration of photo-oxidized dye molecules and open-circuit voltage of the device. Dyes must therefore be designed to encourage these interfacial interactions, but experimentally resolving how such weak interactions affect electron transfer is challenging. Herein, we use X-ray absorption spectroscopy to confirm halogen bonding can exist at the dye-electrolyte interface. Using a known series of triphenylamine-based dyes bearing halogen substituents geometrically positioned for reaction with halides in solution, halogen bonding was detected only in cases where brominated and iodinated dyes were photo-oxidized. This result implies that weak intermolecular interactions between photo-oxidized dyes and the electrolyte can impact device photovoltages. This result was unexpected considering the low concentration of oxidized dyes (less than 1 in 100,000) under full solar illumination.

Three-Dimensional Textile Platform for Electrochemical Devices and its Application to Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells.

Project description:The demand for easy-to-use portable electric devices that are combined with essential items in everyday life, such as apparel, has increased. Hence, significant research has been conducted into the development of wearable technology by fabrication of electronic devices with a textile structure based on fiber or fabric. However, the challenge to develop a fabrication method for wearable devices based on weaving or sewing technology still remains. In this study, we have proposed and fabricated a 3-D textile with two electrodes and one spacer in a single sheet of fabric, utilizing a commercial weaving machine. The two electrodes fulfil the role of electron transfer and the spacer between the electrodes circulates electrons and prevents electrical shorting. Hence, the 3-D textile could be applied to a wide range of electrochemical devices. In addition, it is possible to control the textile structure, size and quantity and change the electrode or spacer materials by replacing the thread. We applied the 3-D textile to dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) which has distinctive advantages such as low manufacturing cost, esthetic appearance for interior or exterior application and high power output under relatively weak light illuminations. The 3-D textile DSSCs were fabricated through a continuous process, from manufacturing to encapsulation, using a non-volatile electrolyte and demonstrated a specific power of 1.7% (1 sun, 1.5 A.M.). The 3-D textile DSSCs were electrically connected in parallel and series by twisting, stainless steel wires, which were used as the weft, and a light-emitting diode lamp was turned on using 3-D textile DSSCs connected in series. This study represents the first stage in the development and application of wearable textile devices.

Supramolecular Hemicage Cobalt Mediators for Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells.

Project description:A new class of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) using the hemicage cobalt-based mediator [Co(ttb)]2+/3+ with the highly preorganized hexadentate ligand 5,5'',5''''-((2,4,6-triethyl benzene-1,3,5-triyl)tris(ethane-2,1-diyl))tri-2,2'-bipyridine (ttb) has been fully investigated. The performances of DSSCs sensitized with organic D-π-A dyes utilizing either [Co(ttb)]2+/3+ or the conventional [Co(bpy)3 ]2+/3+ (bpy=2,2'-bipyridine) redox mediator are comparable under 1000 W m-2 AM 1.5 G illumination. However, the hemicage complexes exhibit exceptional stability under thermal and light stress. In particular, a 120-hour continuous light illumination stability test for DSSCs using [Co(ttb)]2+/3+ resulted in a 10 % increase in the performance, whereas a 40 % decrease in performance was found for [Co(bpy)3 ]2+/3+ electrolyte-based DSSCs under the same conditions. These results demonstrate the great promise of [Co(ttb)]2+/3+ complexes as redox mediators for efficient, cost-effective, large-scale DSSC devices.

Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells: Fundamentals and Current Status.

Still, there is lot of scope for the replacement of current DSSC materials due to their high cost, less abundance, and long-term stability. The efficiency of existing DSSCs reaches up to 12%, using Ru(II) dyes by optimizing material and structural properties which is still less than the efficiency offered by first- and second-generation solar cells, i.e., other thin-film solar cells and Si-based solar cells which offer ~?20-30% efficiency. This article provides an in-depth review on DSSC construction, operating principle, key problems (low efficiency, low scalability, and low stability), prospective efficient materials, and finally a brief insight to commercialization.

Project description:BackgroundDye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) have garnered a lot of attention in recent years. The solar energy to power conversion efficiency of a DSSC is influenced by various components of the cell such as the dye, electrolyte, electrodes and additives among others leading to varying experimental configurations. A large number of metal-based and metal-free dye sensitizers have now been reported and tools using such data to indicate new directions for design and development are on the rise.DescriptionDSSCDB, the first of its kind dye-sensitized solar cell database, aims to provide users with up-to-date information from publications on the molecular structures of the dyes, experimental details and reported measurements (efficiencies and spectral properties) and thereby facilitate a comprehensive and critical evaluation of the data. Currently, the DSSCDB contains over 4000 experimental observations spanning multiple dye classes such as triphenylamines, carbazoles, coumarins, phenothiazines, ruthenium and porphyrins.ConclusionThe DSSCDB offers a web-based, comprehensive source of property data for dye sensitized solar cells. Photovoltaic Performance of Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells Containing ZnO Microrods.

Project description:At an elevated temperature of 90 °C, a chemical bath deposition using an aqueous solution of Zn(NO3)2·6H2O and (CH2)6N4 resulted in the formation of both nanoflowers and microrods of ZnO on F-doped SnO2 glass with a seed layer. The nanoflowers and microrods were sensitized with dyes for application to the photoelectrodes of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). By extending the growth time of ZnO, the formation of nanoflowers was reduced and the formation of microrods favored. As the growth time was increased from 4 to 6 and then to 8 h, the open circuit voltage (Voc) values of the DSSCs were increased, whilst the short circuit current (Jsc) values varied only slightly. Changes in the dye-loading amount, dark current, and electrochemical impedance were monitored and they revealed that the increase in Voc was found to be due to a retardation of the charge recombination between photoinjected electrons and I3- ions and resulted from a reduction in the surface area of ZnO microrods. A reduced surface area decreased the dye contents adsorbed on the ZnO microrods, and thereby decreased the light harvesting efficiency (LHE). An increase in the electron collection efficiency attributed to the suppressed charge recombination counteracted the decreased LHE, resulting in comparable Jsc values regardless of the growth time.

Efficient bifacial dye-sensitized solar cells through disorder by design.

Project description:Herein we realize an optical design that optimizes the performance of bifacial solar cells without modifying any of the usually employed components. In order to do so, dielectric scatterers of controlled size and shape have been successfully integrated in the working electrodes of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs), resulting in bifacial devices of outstanding performance. Power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) as high as 6.7% and 5.4% have been attained under front and rear illumination, respectively, which represent a 25% and a 33% PCE enhancement with respect to an 8 μm-thick standard solar cell electrode using platinum as the catalytic material. The remarkable bifacial character of our approach is demonstrated by the high rear/front efficiency ratio attained, around 80%, which is among the largest reported for this sort of device. The proposed optimized design is based on a Monte Carlo approach in which the multiple scattering of light within the cell is fully accounted for. We identified that the spherical shape of the scatterers is the key parameter controlling the angular distribution of the scattering, the most efficient devices being those in which the inclusions provide a narrow forward-oriented angular distribution of the scattered light.

Impact of TiO2 Nanostructures on Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells Performance.

Project description:The effect of TiO2 nanostructures such as nanoparticles, nanowires, nanotubes on photoanode properties, and dye-sensitized solar cells photovoltaic parameters were studied. The series of dye-sensitized solar cells based on two dyes, that is, commercially N719 and synthesized 3,7'-bis(2-cyano-1-acrylic acid)-10-ethyl-phenothiazine were tested. Additionally, the devices containing a mixture of this sensitizer and chenodeoxycholic acid as co-adsorbent were fabricated. The amount of adsorbed dye molecules to TiO2 was evaluated. The prepared photoanodes with different TiO2 nanostructures were investigated using UV-Vis spectroscopy, optical, atomic force, and scanning electron microscopes. Photovoltaic response of constructed devices was examined based on current-voltage characteristics and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements. It was found that the highest UV-Vis absorption exhibited the photoanode with nanotubes addition. This indicates the highest number of sensitizer molecules anchored to the titanium dioxide photoanode, which was subsequently confirmed by dye-loading tests. The highest power conversion efficiency was (6.97%) for solar cell containing nanotubes and a mixture of the dyes with a co-adsorbent.
