Project description:In order to produce seasoned graduates from tertiary institutions, academic performance of students should be paramount in the minds of stakeholders. The dataset presented the perception of engineering students and lecturers in two private universities in Ogun state, namely, Bells University of Technology and Covenant University. Purposive quota sampling was used to elicit data from students and lecturers in the institutions through a closed ended structured questionnaire. Inferential statistics such as component principal analysis, regression analysis and Kruskall Wallis test were used to present the data. The engineering students are in their fourth year. The data collected focused on stakeholder's relationship on students' academic performance. It also provided information on the significant factors affecting stakeholder's relationship in tertiary educational institution as well as the effect of the age of the students in lecturer-student relationship. The survey data when analysed can be a pointer in identifying the unique stakeholders' characteristics that could engender best academic performance from the students.

Project description:This study aimed to determine if lifestyle habits could predict changes in cognitive control and academic performance in high school students using a longitudinal approach. One hundred and eighty-seven grade seventh to ninth students (mean age: 13.1 ± 1.0 years old) completed a 3-year prospective study. Lifestyle habits, cognitive control, and academic performance were assessed every year during the 3-year study. Results show that in female students, screen time measures were negatively correlated with academic performance and cognitive control. Furthermore, changes (?s) in sleeping habits were associated with ?s in academic performance in both genders, whereas ?s in eating habits and in studying time were correlated with ?s in academic performance only in male students. Moreover, in female students, screen time, social media use, and eating habits measures seem to predict the variance in the ?s of cognitive control measures (r2 between 8.2% and 21.0%), whereas, in male students, studying time, eating, and sleeping habits appear to explain the variance in the ?s of academic performance measures (r2 between 5.9% and 24.8%). In conclusion, results of the present study indicate that lifestyle habits were able to predict ?s in cognitive control and academic performance of high school students during a 3-year period.

Project description:For K-12 students, obesity has been linked to student educational achievements. The study objective was to determine whether academic performance in university students is correlated with BMI. Students from two consecutive academic years (Jan-May 2013 and Jan-May 2014) were given an optional class survey in May, as extra credit. Of the 452 students that completed the survey, 204 females and 75 males (N = 279; 73% female and 27% male) consented to participate in the study. The number of correct answers to problem-solving questions (PSQs) and the overall final grade for the class were compared to the calculated BMI using linear regression with a Pearson's R correlation and unpaired t-tests. BMI was significantly negatively correlated with student's final grades (P = 0.001 Pearson's r = - 0.190) and PSQs were positively correlated with final grades (P < 0.001; Pearson's r = 0.357). Our findings show a correlation between healthy body weight and improved academic performance. Further, the data suggest that future research in the area of body weight, diet, and exercise and any correlations of these with academic performance in college students are warranted.

Project description:Homophily, the tendency of individuals to associate with others who share similar traits, has been identified as a major driving force in the formation and evolution of social ties. In many cases, it is not clear if homophily is the result of a socialization process, where individuals change their traits according to the dominance of that trait in their local social networks, or if it results from a selection process, in which individuals reshape their social networks so that their traits match those in the new environment. Here we demonstrate the detailed temporal formation of strong homophily in academic achievements of high school and university students. We analyze a unique dataset that contains information about the detailed time evolution of a friendship network of 6,000 students across 42 months. Combining the evolving social network data with the time series of the academic performance (GPA) of individual students, we show that academic homophily is a result of selection: students prefer to gradually reorganize their social networks according to their performance levels, rather than adapting their performance to the level of their local group. We find no signs for a pull effect, where a social environment of good performers motivates bad students to improve their performance. We are able to understand the underlying dynamics of grades and networks with a simple model. The lack of a social pull effect in classical educational settings could have important implications for the understanding of the observed persistence of segregation, inequality and social immobility in societies.

Project description:UNLABELLED:Background. Little research exists on the impact of paid work on academic performance of students of health sciences. No research exists on this subject for students in Colombia. Objectives. This paper seeks to analyze the impact of paid work on academic performance among nursing students. DESIGN, SETTINGS AND PARTICIPANTS:cross-sectional research, involving 430 of nursing students from the National University of Colombia (N = 566). Methods. Variables analyzed: sex, age, work activity, attendance, current semester, degree subjects studied and unavailable, lost credits, grades during the second semester of 2013, and delayed semesters. Subgroups analyzed: (i) according to labor activity: do not work, work up to 20 h and work more than 20 h per week; (ii) Grade point average: failing is considered as less than 3.0 and passing 3.0 or above out of 5.0. Percentage of delayed semesters were calculated. Qualitative and quantitative variables were analyzed for groups by work activity. The percentage and probability of students getting a grade point average less than 3.0 and delaying semesters were calculated by multivariate logistic regression. Results. A total of 219 of the students work (50.9%), the main reason is socioeconomic, of which 99 (45.2%) work more than 20 h per week and have an increased risk of failing, which is higher in the first semester. They also get lower grades, lose more credits and take longer to finish the degree. The logistic bivariate regressions of success (grade point average, credits gained, courses gained and not having delayed semesters) reduce with work, above all in those who work more than 20 h per week and increase as the number of semesters completed increases, independent of sex. Conclusion. A high percentage of nursing students work more than 20 h per week. The compatibility of paid work with studies in university nursing students has a negative impact on academic performance, more so when they work more than 20 h per week. This negative impact diminishes as the student completes semesters, irrespective of the sex of the students.

Project description:ObjectiveUntreated vision problems are associated with poor school performance. Whether providing glasses alone improves performance, however, remains unknown. We sought to test whether receiving glasses was associated with improved school performance for low-income minority students in Los Angeles.MethodsFrom 2017 to 2018, we analyzed achievement marks in mathematics and language arts from 406 first to fifth grade students attending 24 public elementary schools who received glasses through a free school-based vision program between February and May 2014, and 23,393 of their nonparticipating same-school, same-grade peers. We calculated students' percentile rank during each grading period in 1 year before and 2 years since they received glasses. Multilevel linear regressions tested whether percentile rank differed from baseline at each subsequent grading period. Models accounted for clustering at the school level and controlled for gender, grade level, and baseline class rank. Interaction terms tested whether associations differed by gender and class rank.ResultsStudents increased 4.5 percentile points (P = .02) in language arts in the second year after receiving glasses. There was no change in math achievement overall; however, those with baseline performance in the bottom tercile had an immediate and sustained improvement of 10 to 24 percentile points from baseline (interaction term P < .001). Class rank for behavior marks decreased during the fourth grading period after receiving glasses but subsequently returned to baseline. There were no significant changes in work habits and no variation in results by gender.ConclusionsEnsuring access to vision care may be a simple, scalable strategy to improve language arts performance for low-income minority children.

Project description:BackgroundSleep disorders are composed of a group of diseases of increasing prevalence and with social-health implications to be considered a public health problem. Sleep habits and specific sleep behaviors have an influence on the academic success of students. However, the characteristics of sleep and sleep habits of university students as predictors of poor academic performance have been scarcely analyzed. In the present study, we aimed to investigate sleep habits and their influence on academic performance in a cohort of Nursing Degree students.MethodsThis was a cross-sectional and observational study. An anonymous and self-administered questionnaire was used, including different scales such as the 'Morningness and Eveningness scale', an author-generated sleep habit questionnaire, and certain variables aimed at studying the socio-familial and academic aspects of the Nursing students. The association of sleep habits and other variables with poor academic performance was investigated by logistic regression. The internal consistency and homogeneity of the 'sleep habits questionnaire' was assessed with the Cronbach's alpha test.ResultsOverall, 401 students (mean age of 22.1 ± 4.9 years, 74.8 % females) from the Nursing Degree were included. The homogeneity of the 'sleep habits questionnaire' was appropriate (Cronbach's alpha = 0.710). Nursing students were characterized by an evening chronotype (20.2 %) and a short sleep pattern. 30.4 % of the Nursing students had bad sleep habits. Regarding the academic performance, 47.9 % of the students showed a poor one. On multivariate logistic regression analysis, a short sleep pattern (adjusted OR = 1.53, 95 % CI 1.01-2.34), bad sleep habits (aOR = 1.76, 95 % CI 1.11-2.79), and age < 25 years (aOR = 2.27, 95 % CI 1.30-3.98) were independently associated with a higher probability of poor academic performance.ConclusionsAlmost 1/3 of the Nursing students were identified as having bad sleep habits, and these students were characterized by an evening chronotype and a short sleep pattern. A short sleep pattern, bad sleep habits, and age < 25 years, were independently associated with a higher risk of poor academic performance. This requires multifactorial approaches and the involvement of all the associated actors: teachers, academic institutions, health institutions, and the people in charge in university residences, among others.

Project description:BackgroundMedical students in academic difficulty are often described as lacking insight. The Self Reflection and Insight Scale (SRIS) is a tool for measuring insight which has been validated in medical students. We investigated whether self reflection and insight scores correlate with academic performance in Year 4 medical students from a six year undergraduate medical degree, and whether self reflection and insight changes after one year of clinical training.MethodsSelf reflection and insight scores were measured in 162 students at the start of Year 4 at the University of Western Australia. Performance in end of year written and clinical exams was monitored and correlated with SRIS. Seventy of the students were surveyed again at the start of Year 5 to see if scores changed or were stable after one year of full time clinical training.ResultsWe found no correlation between self reflection or insight and academic performance in written and clinical exams. There was a significant increase in recognition of the need for self reflection in Year 5 compared with Year 4.ConclusionsWhile no correlation was found between this measure of self reflection and insight with academic performance, there was an increase in students' recognition of the need for reflection after one year of clinical studies. This study is a valuable first step towards a potentially exciting research domain and warrants further longitudinal evaluation with larger cohorts of students using additional measures of achievement.

Project description:BackgroundSocial media has become an integral part in the life of every individual in the 21st century. Social media addiction in the younger age group is a major problem. The objective of this study was to find a correlation between academic performance and social media use.MethodsThis was a cross-sectional questionnaire-based study conducted in a medical school over a period of 3 months (Nov 2018-Jan 2019), where 400 medical undergraduates who use social media participated in the study. Data collected from the questionnaire included the academic performance in terms of university examination marks, the duration of social media use per day and the social media addiction score. Data correlation was done using the Pearson's correlation factor.Results41.5% of students used social media for upto 3 h per day. Whatsapp (98.25%) and Youtube (91.75%) were the most commonly used social media applications. 73.5% used social media to read health-related news, 71.5% used it to complete assignments and more than 50% used it for seminar preparation, test preparation and research-related purposes. Academic performance of female students was better than male students. There was a significantly higher use of social media among academically low-performing medical students compared with high-performing medical students. There was a weak negative correlation between academic performance and social media usage and a strong positive correlation between social media usage and the social media addiction score.ConclusionsSocial media has a negative impact on the academic performance of 21st-century undergraduate medical students.

Project description:Background: Clinical nursing competence in mental health is one of the most important topics in theoretical and practical nursing training with many factors affecting it. The purpose of this study is to determine the impact of the implementation of the "mental health nursing students' clinical competence model" on nursing students' academic performance. Methods: This study is a semi experimental following one group of student nurses. "mental health nursing students' clinical competence model" for undergraduate nursing student's education was applied. The study population included 50 nursing students, who were studying from fifth semester to seventh semester and selected through census sampling. During the seventh semester after the completion of theoretical and practical courses in mental health nursing, re-evaluation was conducted and the scores before and after the implementation of the clinical competence model were compared. Results: Rate of clinical competency before the intervention, was estimated at the level of non-mastered; and after intervention was at the level of mastered, demonstrating a significant difference (p<0.001). Areas of clinical competency scores before and after the intervention were compared which showed significant difference in all the areas except the mental competency areas (p<0.05). Conclusions: The implementation of the "mental health nursing students' clinical competence model" and appropriate planning for achievement of mental health nursing specialized competency can ensure the achievement of clinical competency by nursing students.
