Simulation Study of Process-Controlled Supramolecular Block Copolymer Phase Separation with Reversible Reaction Algorithm.

ABSTRACT: A supramolecular diblock copolymer formed by reversible bonds between the two blocks shows a rich microphase separation behavior and has great application potential in stimuli-responsive materials. We propose a novel method to describe supramolecular reactions in dissipative particle dynamics, which includes a reversible reaction to accurately reproduce the strength, saturation, and dynamic properties of the reversible bonds in the simulations. The thermodynamic properties and dynamic processes of the supramolecular diblock copolymer melts in both equilibrium and non-equilibrium states were studied using this method. The simulation results show that the method can faithfully characterize phase behaviors and dynamic properties of supramolecular diblock copolymer melts, especially in a non-equilibrium state, which provides a novel tool to unveil self-assembly mechanism and describe the properties of supramolecular block copolymers.

Project description:In this paper, the concept of the functional mechanism of copolymer membrane formation is explained and analyzed from the theoretical and experimental points of view. To understand the phase inversion process and control the final membrane morphology, styrene-acrylonitrile copolymer (SAN) membrane morphology through the self-assembly phenomena is investigated. Since the analysis of the membrane morphology requires the study of both thermodynamic and kinetic parameters, the effect of different membrane formation conditions is investigated experimentally; In order to perceive the formation mechanism of the extraordinary structure membrane, a thermodynamic hypothesis is also developed based on the hydrophilic coil migration to the membrane surface. This hypothesis is analyzed according to Hansen Solubility Parameters and proved using EDX, SAXS, and contact angle analysis of SAN25. Moreover, the SAN30 membrane is fabricated under different operating conditions to evaluate the possibility of morphological prediction based on the developed hypothesis.

Molecular Mass Affects the Phase Separation of Aqueous PEG-Polycation Block Copolymer.

Project description:Mechanisms of the phase separation and remixing of cationic PEG-containing block copolymers have been investigated in aqueous lithium triflate solutions. The polycation was poly(vinylbenzyl trimethylammonium triflate). We have previously reported on one such block copolymer, which upon cooling of a hot clear solution first underwent phase separation into a turbid colloid and, later, partially cleared again with further cooling. To better understand the balance of various interactions in the solutions/dispersions, a series of polymers with varying DP of the cationic block was synthesized. From one of the polymers, the alkyl end group (a fragment of the chain transfer agent) was removed. The length of the cationic block affected critically the behavior, but the hydrophobic end group had a minimal effect. Polymers with a short cationic block turn cloudy and partially clear again during a temperature decrease, whereas those with a long cationic block phase separate and slowly precipitate and remix only when heated. Phase separation takes place via particle formation, and we suggest different mechanisms for colloidal stabilization of particles composed of short or long chains.

Polyphosphinoborane Block Copolymer Synthesis Using Catalytic Reversible Chain-Transfer Dehydropolymerization.

Project description:An amphiphilic block copolymer of polyphosphinoborane has been prepared by a mechanism-led strategy of the sequential catalytic dehydropolymerization of precursor monomers, H3 B ⋅ PRH2 (R=Ph, n-hexyl), using the simple pre-catalyst [Rh(Ph2 PCH2 CH2 PPh2 )2 ]Cl. Speciation, mechanism and polymer chain growth studies support a step-growth process where reversible chain transfer occurs, i.e. H3 B ⋅ PRH2 /oligomer/polymer can all coordinate with, and be activated by, the catalyst. Block copolymer [H2 BPPhH]110 -b-[H2 BP(n-hexyl)H]11 can be synthesized and self-assembles in solution to form either rod-like micelles or vesicles depending on solvent polarity.

Scalable Fabrication of Reversible Antifouling Block Copolymer Coatings via Adsorption Strategies.

Project description:Fouling remains a widespread challenge as its nonspecific and uncontrollable character limits the performance of materials and devices in numerous applications. Although many promising antifouling coatings have been developed to reduce or even prevent this undesirable adhesion process, most of them suffer from serious limitations, specifically in scalability. Whereas scalability can be particularly problematic for covalently bound antifouling polymer coatings, replacement by physisorbed systems remains complicated as it often results in less effective, low-density films. In this work, we introduce a two-step adsorption strategy to fabricate high-density block copolymer-based antifouling coatings on hydrophobic surfaces, which exhibit superior properties compared to one-step adsorbed coatings. The obtained hybrid coating manages to effectively suppress the attachment of both lysozyme and bovine serum albumin, which can be explained by its dense and homogeneous surface structure as well as the desired polymer conformation. In addition, the intrinsic reversibility of the adhered complex coacervate core micelles allows for the successful triggered release and regeneration of the hybrid coating, resulting in full recovery of its antifouling properties. The simplicity and reversibility make this a unique and promising antifouling strategy for large-scale underwater applications.

Numerical Simulation of the Gas-Solid Two-Phase Flow-Reaction Process in a Maximizing Isoparaffin Process Reactor.

Project description:The process of the fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) is accompanied by complex physical and chemical reactions and phase transition processes. For the FCC process-maximizing isoparaffin process (MIP), coupled simulation and optimization of flow reaction can meet the requirements for the design and operation of high efficiency, low energy consumption, low pollution, and low cost in the catalytic device. A combination of Eulerian-Eulerian model and 11-lump kinetic model is adopted to simulate the flow-reaction process of gas-solid two-phase of an industrial MIP riser reactor. A drag model based on the energy-minimization multiscale model established by Yang is incorporated into FLUENT through a user-defined function (UDF). The temperature distribution of the catalyst and the concentration of each product component at the outlet are in good agreement with the industrial measured data, which indicates that the established coupling model of flow reaction and drag model are reliable and effective. The two operating variables of the catalyst-to-oil ratio and catalyst inlet temperature are explored their effects on the flow-reaction process of FCC gas-solid two-phase. In the prelifting zone, the velocity of catalyst particles presents parabolic distribution. In the first reaction zone, the maximum velocity of catalyst particles is about 1/2 of the radius of the riser. In the second reaction zone, the maximum particle velocity of catalyst is located in the central region, with a slight increase in about 1/2 of the radius of the riser. The increase in catalyst-to-oil ratio leads to the decrease in the yield of diesel oil and the increase in yields of gasoline, liquefied petroleum gas, propylene, and dry gas. The changes in the catalyst inlet temperature affect the product distribution of the outlet component, which can provide an important guiding significance.

Thermoadaptive Supramolecular α-Cyclodextrin Crystallization-Based Hydrogels via Double Hydrophilic Block Copolymer Templating.

Project description:Supramolecular hydrogels play a prominent role in contemporary research of hydrophilic polymers. Especially, hydrogels based on α-cyclodextrin/poly(ethylene glycol) (α-CD/PEG) complexation and crystal formation are studied frequently. Here, the effect of double hydrophilic block copolymers (DHBCs) on α-CD/PEG hydrogel properties is investigated. Therefore, a novel DHBC, namely poly(N-vinylpyrrolidone)-b-poly(oligo ethylene glycol methacrylate) (PVP-b-POEGMA), was synthesized via a combination of reversible deactivation radical polymerization and modular conjugation methods. In the next step, hydrogel formation was studied after α-CD addition. Interestingly, DHBC-based hydrogels showed a significant response to thermal history. Heating of the gels to different temperatures led to different mechanical properties after cooling to ambient temperature, i.e., gels with mechanical properties similar to the initial gels or weak flowing gels were obtained. Thus, the hydrogels showed thermoadaptive behavior, which might be an interesting property for future applications in sensing.

Temperature-modulated separation of vascular cells using thermoresponsive-anionic block copolymer-modified glass.

Project description:IntroductionVascular tissue engineering is a key technology in the field of regenerative medicine. In tissue engineering, the separation of vascular cells without cell modification is required, as cell modifications affect the intrinsic properties of the cells. In this study, we have developed an effective method for separating vascular cells without cell modification, using a thermoresponsive anionic block copolymer.MethodsA thermoresponsive anionic block copolymer, poly(acrylic acid)-b-poly(N-isopropylacryl-amide) (PAAc-b-PNIPAAm), with various PNIPAAm segment lengths, was prepared in two steps: atom transfer radical polymerization and subsequent deprotection. Normal human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs), normal human dermal fibroblasts, and human aortic smooth muscle cells (SMCs) were seeded onto the prepared thermoresponsive anionic block copolymer brush-modified glass. The adhesion behavior of cells on the copolymer brush was observed at 37 °C and 20 °C.ResultsA thermoresponsive anionic block copolymer, poly(acrylic acid)-b-poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PAAc-b-PNIPAAm), with various PNIPAAm segment lengths was prepared. The prepared copolymer-modified glass exhibited anionic properties attributed to the bottom PAAc segment of the copolymer brush. On the PAAc-b-PNIPAAm, which had a moderate PNIPAAm length, a high adhesion ratio of HUVECs and low adhesion ratio of SMCs were observed at 37 °C. By reducing temperature from 37 °C to 20 °C, the adhered HUVECs were detached, whereas the SMCs maintained adhesion, leading to the recovery of purified HUVECs by changing the temperature.ConclusionsThe prepared thermoresponsive anionic copolymer-modified glass could be used to separate HUVECs and SMCs by changing the temperature without modifying the cell surface. Therefore, the developed cell separation method will be useful for vascular tissue engineering.

Supramolecular guests in solvent driven block copolymer assembly: From internally structured nanoparticles to micelles.

Project description:Supramolecular interactions between different hydrogen-bonding guests and poly(2-vinyl pyridine)-block-poly (styrene) can be exploited to prepare remarkably diverse self-assembled nanostructures in dispersion from a single block copolymer (BCP). The characteristics of the BCP can be efficiently controlled by tailoring the properties of a guest which preferentially binds to the P2VP block. For example, the incorporation of a hydrophobic guest creates a hydrophobic BCP complex that forms phase separated nanoparticles upon self-assembly. Conversely, the incorporation of a hydrophilic guest results in an amphiphilic BCP complex that forms spherical micelles in water. The ability to tune the self-assembly behavior and access dramatically different nanostructures from a single BCP substrate demonstrates the exceptional versatility of the self-assembly of BCPs driven by supramolecular interactions. This approach represents a new methodology that will enable the further design of complex, responsive self-assembled nanostructures.

Nanoparticle anisotropy induces sphere-to-cylinder phase transition in block copolymer melts.

Project description:Block copolymer nanocomposites including anisotropic nanoparticles have been previously found to co-assemble into complex structures with nanoparticle alignment. Anisotropic nanoparticles with large aspect ratios are found to modify the morphology of block copolymers at modest concentrations, inducing a sphere-to-cylinder phase transition by breaking the local symmetry in the vicinity of a solid particle. This transition takes place over a wide range of NP lengths comparable with the BCP spacing. Controlling the orientation of uniaxial nanoparticles provides additional control over the global orientation of the block copolymer, as previously reported by experiments.

Self-associating block copolymer networks for microchip electrophoresis provide enhanced DNA separation via "inchworm" chain dynamics.

Project description:We describe a novel class of DNA separation media for microchip electrophoresis, "physically cross-linked" block copolymer networks, which provide rapid (<4.5 min) and remarkably enhanced resolution of DNA in a size range critical for genotyping. Linear poly(acrylamide-co-dihexylacrylamide) (LPA-co-DHA) comprising as little as 0.13 mol % dihexylacrylamide yields substantially improved electrophoretic DNA separations compared to matched molar mass linear polyacrylamide. Single-molecule videomicroscopic images of DNA electrophoresis reveal novel chain dynamics in LPA-co-DHA matrixes, resembling inchworm movement, to which we attribute the increased DNA resolution. Substantial improvements in DNA peak separation are obtained, in particular, in LPA-co-DHA solutions at polymer/copolymer concentrations near the interchain entanglement threshold. Higher polymer concentrations yield enhanced separations only for small DNA molecules (<120 base pairs). Hydrophobically cross-linked networks offer advantages over conventional linear polymers based on enhanced separation performance (or speed) and over chemically cross-linked gels because hydrophobic cross-links can be reversibly broken, allowing facile microchannel loading.
