Effect of Aromatic Petroleum Resin on Damping Properties of Polybutyl Methacrylate.

ABSTRACT: The damping properties of polybutyl methacrylate (PBMA)/aromatic petroleum resin (C9) composite were investigated in this work. In particular, a trace of styrene (St) was introduced to copolymerize with PBMA to improve the compatibility between C9 and matrix. The structure of the copolymer, P(BMA-co-St), was characterized by FTIR and 1HNMR. The P(BMA-co-St)/C9 composites were tested by differencial scanning calorimetry (DSC), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and dynamical mechanical analysis (DMA). DSC curves of all P(BMA-co-1wt%St)/C9 composites expressed only one glass transition temperature (Tg). SEM images showed that C9 had good compatibility with the matrix after St was introduced. DMA curves indicated that the addition of C9 had a positive effect on the damping properties of PBMA. The loss tangent (tan?) peak moved to a higher temperature with the increment content of C9, and the effective damping temperature range increased significantly. The influence of aromatic resin C9 and aliphatic resin (C5) on PBMA damping performance was compared. It was further shown that C9 with benzene ring effectively improved the damping performance of PBMA.

Project description:Polymerization shrinkage of resin composite can compromise the longevity of restorations. To minimize this problem, the monomeric composition of composites have been modified. The objective of this study was to conduct a meta-analysis to assess the clinical behavior of restorations performed with low polymerization shrinkage resin composite in comparison with traditional methacrylates-based resin composite. This systematic review was registered at Prospero data system (CRD42015023940). Studies were searched in the electronic databases PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, Lilacs and EMBASE according to a predefined search strategy. The inclusion criteria were as follow: (1) randomized controlled clinical trials with at least six months of follow-up; (2) studies investigating composites with monomers designed to reduce polymerization shrinkage; (3) studies conducted with class I or II restorations in the permanent dentition; and (4) studies that assessed at least one of the following criteria: marginal integrity/adaptation, marginal discoloration, recurent caries, retention of composite restorations, and postoperative sensitivity. Two independent reviewers analyzed the articles to determine inclusion and risk of bias. The search conducted in the databases resulted in a total of 14,217 studies. After reviewing the references and citations, 21 articles remained. The longest clinical follow-up time was 60 months. The meta-analysis of the data in the included studies demonstrated that only one variable (marginal adaptation after 12 months) showed statistically significant outcomes, in which methacrylates-based composites presented significantly better results than resin composites containing modified monomers. The good level of the scientific evidence as well as the overall low risk of bias of the included studies indicate that composites with silorane, ormocer or bulk-fill type modified monomers have a clinical performance similar to conventional resin composites.

Project description:This work involves the synthesis of hybrid oligomers based on the epoxy methacrylate resin. The EA resin was obtained by the modification of industrial-grade bisphenol A-based epoxy resin and methacrylic acid has been synthesized in order to develop multifunctional resins comprising both epoxide group and reactive, terminal unsaturation. Owing to the presence of both epoxy and double carbon-carbon pendant groups, the reaction product exhibits photocrosslinking via two distinct mechanisms: (i) cationic ring-opening polymerization and (ii) free radical polymerization. Monitoring of EA synthesis reactions over time using PAVs, MAAC and NV parameters, and the FT-IR method reveals that esterification reactions proceed faster at the start, exhibiting over 40% of conversion within the initial 60 min, which can be associated with a relatively high concentration of reactive sites and low viscosity of the reaction mixture at the initial reaction stage. With the further increase in the reaction time, the reaction rate tends to decrease. The control of the EA synthesis process can guide how to adjust reactions to obtain EAs with desired characteristics. Based on obtained values, one can state that the optimum synthesis time of about 4-5 h should be adopted to prepare EAs having both epoxy groups and unsaturated double bonds. The structure of the obtained EA was confirmed by FT-IR and NMR methods, as well as the determination of partial acid value and epoxy equivalent. Samples at various stages of synthesis were cured with UV radiation in order to study the kinetics of the process according to cationic and radical polymerization determined via photo-differential scanning calorimetry (photo-DSC) and real-time infrared spectroscopy (RT-IR) and then the properties of the cured coatings were tested. It turned out that the cationic polymerization was slower with a lower conversion of the photoreactive groups, as compared to the radical polymerization. All the obtained EA coatings were characterized by good properties of cured coatings and can be successfully used in the coating-forming sector.
