Caspase-1 drives a lytic inflammatory cell death named pyroptosis by cleaving the pore-forming cell death executor gasdermin-D (GSDMD). <i>Gsdmd</i> deficiency, however, only delays cell lysis, indicating that caspase-1 controls alternative cell death pathways.
