Pulse-driven robot: Motion via solitary waves.

ABSTRACT: The unique properties of nonlinear waves have been recently exploited to enable a wide range of applications, including impact mitigation, asymmetric transmission, switching, and focusing. Here, we demonstrate that the propagation of nonlinear waves can be as well harnessed to make flexible structures crawl. By combining experimental and theoretical methods, we show that such pulse-driven locomotion reaches a maximum efficiency when the initiated pulses are solitons and that our simple machine can move on a wide range of surfaces and even steer. Our study expands the range of possible applications of nonlinear waves and demonstrates that they offer a new platform to make flexible machines to move.

Command of three-dimensional solitary waves via photopatterning.

Project description:Multidimensional solitons are prevalent in numerous research fields. In orientationally ordered soft matter system, three-dimensional director solitons exemplify the localized distortion of molecular orientation. However, their precise manipulation remains challenging due to unpredictable and uncontrolled generation. Here, we utilize preimposed programmable photopatterning in nematics to control the kinetics of director solitons. This enables both unidirectional and bidirectional generation at specific locations and times, confinement within micron-scaled patterns of diverse shapes, and directed propagation along predefined trajectories. A focused dynamical model provides insight into the origins of these solitons and aligns closely with experimental observations, underscoring the pivotal role of anchoring conditions in soliton manipulation. Our findings pave the way for diverse fundamental research avenues and promising applications, including microcargo transportation and optical information processing.

Electrically driven three-dimensional solitary waves as director bullets in nematic liquid crystals.

Project description:Electric field-induced collective reorientation of nematic molecules is of importance for fundamental science and practical applications. This reorientation is either homogeneous over the area of electrodes, as in displays, or periodically modulated, as in electroconvection. The question is whether spatially localized three-dimensional solitary waves of molecular reorientation could be created. Here we demonstrate that the electric field can produce particle-like propagating solitary waves representing self-trapped "bullets" of oscillating molecular director. These director bullets lack fore-aft symmetry and move with very high speed perpendicularly to the electric field and to the initial alignment direction. The bullets are true solitons that preserve spatially confined shapes and survive collisions. The solitons are topologically equivalent to the uniform state and have no static analogs, thus exhibiting a particle-wave duality. Their shape, speed, and interactions depend strongly on the material parameters, which opens the door for a broad range of future studies.

Electron beam driven ion-acoustic solitary waves in plasmas with two kappa-distributed electrons.

Project description:Formation and the basic features of arbitrary amplitude ion-acoustic solitary waves (IASWs) in a plasma consisting of warm positive ions, two [Formula: see text]-distributed electrons and an electron beam are investigated by using the Sagdeev pseudopotential approach. It is shown that the soliton existence domain (Mach number limits) sensitively depends on temperature of ions, spectral index of cool electrons and concentration of hot electron species while spectral index of hot electrons, hot-to-cool electron temperature ratio and also concentration of electron beam do not considerably affect this domain. It is also found that temperature of electron beam only affect the existence domain of rarefactive solitons. Furthermore, it is shown that considered plasma medium supports the coexistence of positive and negative IASWs. Moreover, effect of different plasma parameters such as hot-to-cool electron density ratio, ion-to-cool electron temperature ratio, beam-to-ion density ratio, hot-to-cool electron temperature ratio and superthermality index of electron species on the basic features of positive and negative IASWs is investigated numerically. Finally, the effect of plasma parameters on the parametric regime of coexistence of compressive and rarefactive IASWs is studied and, for example, effect of temperature of positive ions and number density of hot electrons on polarity of IASWs is numerically investigated.

A Magnetic-Driven Multi-motion Robot with Position/Orientation Sensing Capability.

Project description:Miniature magnetic-driven robots with multimode motions and high-precision pose sensing capacity (position and orientation) are greatly demanded in in situ manipulation in narrow opaque enclosed spaces. Various magnetic robots have been carried out, whereas their deformations normally remain in single mode, and the lack of the robot's real-time status leads to its beyond-sight remagnetization and manipulation being impossible. The function integration of pose sensing and multimode motion is still of challenge. Here, a multimotion thin-film robot is created in a novel multilayer structure with a magnetic-driven layer covered by a heating-sensing conductive layer. Such a heating-sensing layer not only can segmentally and on-demand heat the magnetic-driven layer for in situ magnetization reprogramming and multimode motions but also can precisely detect the robot's pose (position and orientation) from its electrical-resistance effect by creating a small deformation under preset magnetic fields. Under the integration of reprogramming and sensing, necessary multimode motions, i.e., swimming, rolling, crawling, and obstacle-crossing, are achieved under a reprogramming field BRepr of 10 mT, and high-precision poses sensing with an accuracy of ± 3 mm in position and ± 2.5° in orientation is obtained even under a low magnetic strength of BSens of 5 mT, which combined help realize accurate out-of-sight manipulations in the enclosed space environment. Finally, a gastroscope robot for stomach drug delivery has been demonstrated for more gastrointestinal medical treatments.

Magnetically Driven Quadruped Soft Robot with Multimodal Motion for Targeted Drug Delivery.

Project description:Untethered magnetic soft robots show great potential for biomedical and small-scale micromanipulation applications due to their high flexibility and ability to cause minimal damage. However, most current research on these robots focuses on marine and reptilian biomimicry, which limits their ability to move in unstructured environments. In this work, we design a quadruped soft robot with a magnetic top cover and a specific magnetization angle, drawing inspiration from the common locomotion patterns of quadrupeds in nature and integrating our unique actuation principle. It can crawl and tumble and, by adjusting the magnetic field parameters, it adapts its locomotion to environmental conditions, enabling it to cross obstacles and perform remote transportation and release of cargo.

Control of humanoid robot via motion-onset visual evoked potentials.

Project description:This paper investigates controlling humanoid robot behavior via motion-onset specific N200 potentials. In this study, N200 potentials are induced by moving a blue bar through robot images intuitively representing robot behaviors to be controlled with mind. We present the individual impact of each subject on N200 potentials and discuss how to deal with individuality to obtain a high accuracy. The study results document the off-line average accuracy of 93% for hitting targets across over five subjects, so we use this major component of the motion-onset visual evoked potential (mVEP) to code people's mental activities and to perform two types of on-line operation tasks: navigating a humanoid robot in an office environment with an obstacle and picking-up an object. We discuss the factors that affect the on-line control success rate and the total time for completing an on-line operation task.

Multidirectional Planar Motion Transmission on a Single-Motor Actuated Robot via Microscopic Galumphing.

Project description:Insect-scale mobile robots can execute diverse arrays of tasks in confined spaces. Although most self-contained crawling robots integrate multiple actuators to ensure high flexibility, the intricate actuators restrict their miniaturization. Conversely, robots with a single actuator lack the requisite agility and precision for planar movements. Herein, a novel eccentric rotation-dependent multidirectional transmission is presented using a tilted eccentric motor and a simplistic two-legged structural configuration for planar locomotion. The speed of the eccentric motor is modulated to enable alternating microscopic jumps to propel the system, creating a mode of motion analogous to galumphing of seals. Upon modeling the motion dynamics and conducting experiments, the effectiveness of direct motion transmission is substantiated through microscopic galumphing encompassing left/right crawling and straight-forward crawling. Finally, a 1.2 g untethered robot is developed, which demonstrates enhanced straight crawling and spot turning, traverses narrow tunnels, and achieves precise movements. Therefore, the proposed motion-transmission technique provides a comprehensive set of innovative solutions of underactuated agile robots.

Noise driven evolutionary waves.

Project description:Adaptation in spatially extended populations entails the propagation of evolutionary novelties across habitat ranges. Driven by natural selection, beneficial mutations sweep through the population in a "wave of advance". The standard model for these traveling waves, due to R. Fisher and A. Kolmogorov, plays an important role in many scientific areas besides evolution, such as ecology, epidemiology, chemical kinetics, and recently even in particle physics. Here, we extend the Fisher-Kolmogorov model to account for mutations that confer an increase in the density of the population, for instance as a result of an improved metabolic efficiency. We show that these mutations invade by the action of random genetic drift, even if the mutations are slightly deleterious. The ensuing class of noise-driven waves are characterized by a wave speed that decreases with increasing population sizes, contrary to conventional Fisher-Kolmogorov waves. When a trade-off exists between density and growth rate, an evolutionary optimal population density can be predicted. Our simulations and analytical results show that genetic drift in conjunction with spatial structure promotes the economical use of limited resources. The simplicity of our model, which lacks any complex interactions between individuals, suggests that noise-induced pattern formation may arise in many complex biological systems including evolution.

Fourier Series Analysis for Novel Spatiotemporal Pulse Waves: Normal, Taut, and Slippery Pulse Images.

Project description:In this article, a three-dimensional pulse image (3DPI) instead of a one-dimensional temporal pulse wave is studied to elucidate its spatiotemporal characteristics. To check the spatial and temporal properties of 3DPI, adopted is Fourier series, in which a ratio (r) is defined as one amplitude divided by the sum of the first three amplitudes of harmonics. A ratio sequence is constituted from 70 to 90 ratios in a heartbeat with 70-90 3DPIs by sampling. Twenty-four subjects (14 males and 10 females with age of 22.2?±?3.7?years, 20.4?±?1.4 BMI, and 112.1?±?4.7?mmHg systolic blood pressure) are involved in this research. There are significant statistical differences in the groups of the normal, taut, and slippery 3DPIs by the first harmonic ratio average ( r1¯ ) and ratio difference (?r 1) produced from the ratio sequence. The proposed method of this study gives us a novel viewpoint to clarify the spatiotemporal characteristics of pulse images, which can translate and quantize the pulse feeling in Chinese medicine texts.
