Highly Efficient and Recyclable Catalysts for Cellobiose Hydrolysis: Systematic Comparison of Carbon Nanomaterials Functionalized With Benzyl Sulfonic Acids.

ABSTRACT: Carbon materials such as activated coal, nanotubes, nanofibers, or graphene nanoplatelets were functionalized with sulfonic acid moieties by a diazonium coupling strategy. High acidity was obtained for the majority of the carbon solids except for the carbon nanofibers. The activity of these acidic catalysts for the hydrolysis of cellobiose, as model molecule for cellulose, into glucose in neutral water medium was studied. The conversion of cellobiose is increasing with the acidity of the catalyst. We found that a minimum threshold amount of acidic functions is required for triggering the hydrolysis. The selectivity toward glucose is very high as soon as sulfonic functions are present on the catalyst. The robustness of the sulfonic functions grafted on the carbons has been highlighted by successful recyclability over six runs.

Project description:Controlling the product selectivity of a ring-opening hydrolysis reaction remains a great challenge with mineral acids and to an extent with homogeneous catalysts. In addition, even trace amounts of metal impurities in a bioactive product hinder the reaction progress. This has necessitated the development of robust and metal-free catalysts to offer an alternative sustainable route. We report a nitrogen-rich sulfonated carbon as a catalyst derived from an inexpensive precursor for the synthesis of bioactive vicinal diols of spiro-oxindole derivatives. The well-characterized catalyst shows wide generality with different electronic and steric substituents in the substrates under mild reaction conditions. Hot filtration test confirms no leaching of the acid moiety and the catalyst could be reused for four cycles with retention of activities.

Silica-supported sulfonic acids as recyclable catalyst for esterification of levulinic acid with stoichiometric amounts of alcohols.

Project description:Converting biomass into value-added chemicals holds the key to sustainable long-term carbon resource management. In this context, levulinic acid, which is easily obtained from cellulose, is valuable since it can be transformed into a variety of industrially relevant fine chemicals. Here we present a simple protocol for the selective esterification of levulinic acid using solid acid catalysts. Silica supported sulfonic acid catalysts operate under mild conditions and give good conversion and selectivity with stoichiometric amounts of alcohols. The sulfonic acid groups are tethered to the support using organic tethers. These tethers may help in preventing the deactivation of the active sites in the presence of water.

Fine-Tuned Enzymatic Hydrolysis of Organosolv Pretreated Forest Materials for the Efficient Production of Cellobiose.

Project description:Non-digestible oligosaccharides (NDOs) are likely prebiotic candidates that have been related to the prevention of intestinal infections and other disorders for both humans and animals. Lignocellulosic biomass is the largest carbon source in the biosphere, therefore cello-oligosacharides (COS), especially cellobiose, are potentially the most widely available choice of NDOs. Production of COS and cellobiose with enzymes offers numerous benefits over acid-catalyzed processes, as it is milder, environmentally friendly and produces fewer by-products. Cellobiohydrolases (CBHs) and a class of endoglucanases (EGs), namely processive EGs, are key enzymes for the production of COS, as they have higher preference toward glycosidic bonds near the end of cellulose chains and are able to release soluble products. In this work, we describe the heterologous expression and characterization of two CBHs from the filamentous fungus Thermothelomyces thermophila, as well as their synergism with proccessive EGs for cellobiose release from organosolv pretreated spruce and birch. The properties, inhibition kinetics and substrate specific activities for each enzyme are described in detail. The results show that a combination of EGs belonging to Glycosyl hydrolase families 5, 6, and 9, with a CBHI and CBHII in appropriate proportions, can enhance the production of COS from forest materials, underpinning the potential of these biocatalysts in the production of NDOs.

Functionalized Nylon 6 Fabric as an Efficient and Recyclable Catalyst for Knoevenagel Condensation.

Project description:Nylon 6 fabrics were chemically modified via reduction with BH3 for being functionalized as heterogeneous base organocatalysts for Knoevenagel condensation. The results of FTIR, XPS, and SEM indicated the successful modification of nylon 6 fabrics. With a low catalytic dosage of 6.6 mol % and a short reaction time (2 h), the fabric catalysts were well applicable to Knoevenagel condensation of a wide range of substrates and up to 98% yield could be obtained. In addition, the fabric catalysts have some beneficial advantages in terms of easy separation, good reusability, and recyclability (up to 10 times).

Graphene-Based Nanomaterials as Efficient Peroxidase Mimetic Catalysts for Biosensing Applications: An Overview.

Project description:"Artificial enzymes", a term coined by Breslow for enzyme mimics is an exciting and promising branch of biomimetic chemistry aiming to imitate the general and essential principles of natural enzymes using a variety of alternative materials including heterogeneous catalysts. Peroxidase enzymes represent a large family of oxidoreductases that typically catalyze biological reactions with high substrate affinity and specificity under relatively mild conditions and thus offer a wide range of practical applications in many areas of science. The increasing understanding of general principles as well as intrinsic drawbacks such as low operational stability, high cost, difficulty in purification and storage, and sensitivity of catalytic activity towards atmospheric conditions of peroxidases has triggered a dynamic field in nanotechnology, biochemical, and material science that aims at joining the better of three worlds by combining the concept adapted from nature with the processability of catalytically active graphene-based nanomaterials (G-NMs) as excellent peroxidase mimetic catalysts. This comprehensive review discusses an up-to-date synthesis, kinetics, mechanisms, and biosensing applications of a variety of G-NMs that have been explored as promising catalysts to mimic natural peroxidases.

Copper Nanowires as Highly Efficient and Recyclable Catalyst for Rapid Hydrogen Generation from Hydrolysis of Sodium Borohydride.

Project description:: Hydrogen (H2) is a clean energy carrier which can help to solve environmental issues with the depletion of fossil fuels. Sodium borohydride (NaBH4) is a promising candidate material for solid state hydrogen storage due to its huge hydrogen storage capacity and nontoxicity. However, the hydrolysis of NaBH4 usually requires expensive noble metal catalysts for a high H2 generation rate (HGR). Here, we synthesized high-aspect ratio copper nanowires (CuNWs) using a hydrothermal method and used them as the catalyst for the hydrolysis of NaBH4 to produce H2. The catalytic H2 generation demonstrated that 0.1 ng of CuNWs could achieve the highest volume of H2 gas in 240 min. The as-prepared CuNWs exhibited remarkable catalytic performance: the HGR of this study (2.7 × 1010 mL min-1 g-1) is ~3.27 × 107 times higher than a previous study on a Cu-based catalyst. Furthermore, a low activation energy (Ea) of 42.48 kJ mol-1 was calculated. Next, the retreated CuNWs showed an outstanding and stable performance for five consecutive cycles. Moreover, consistent catalytic activity was observed when the same CuNWs strip was used for four consecutive weeks. Based on the results obtained, we have shown that CuNWs can be a plausible candidate for the replacement of a costly catalyst for H2 generation.

Towards recyclable NAD(P)H regeneration catalysts.

Project description:Rh(III)-TsDPEN, an immobilized analog of the well-known [Cp*Rh(bpy)(H(2)O)](2+) was evaluated as a heterogeneous, recyclable regeneration catalyst for reduced oxidoreductase cofactors [NAD(P)H]. Repeated use of this catalyst was established and the catalytic properties were initially investigated. Apparently, Rh(III)-TsDPEN is prone to severe diffusion limitations, necessitating further developments. Overall, a promising concept for chemoenzymatic redox catalysis is proposed, which may overcome some of the current limitations such as catalyst cost and incompatibility of Rh with some biocatalysts.

Highly efficient and recyclable chiral phosphine-functionalized polyether ionic liquids for asymmetric hydrogenation of β-keto esters.

Project description:Herein, based on the concept of integration of phosphine ligands and ionic liquids (ILs), a class of chiral phosphine-functionalized polyether ionic liquids (CPF-PILs) were synthesized by ion-exchange reaction between polyether imidazolium ILs and a phenyl-sulfonated (S)-(-)-2,2'-bis(diphenylphosphino)-1,1'-binaphthyl (BINAP) chiral diphosphine ligand, and employed in the Ru-catalyzed homogeneous asymmetric hydrogenation of β-keto esters. The resulting CPF-PILs combined the dual functions of the chiral phosphine ligand and ILs, allowing efficient recovery and recycling of the chiral catalysts using only a catalytic amount of CPF-PILs. The effects of various factors, including the chiral catalyst structure, solvent properties, reaction temperature, hydrogen pressure, and hydrobromic acid dosage, on catalytic performance were thoroughly investigated, as well as the cycling stability and universality of the chiral catalysts were examined. The findings of the present study demonstrated that, under optimal reaction conditions, the model substrate methyl acetoacetate underwent quantitative conversion to methyl β-hydroxybutyrate with a 97% enantiomeric excess (ee). The chiral catalyst used in this process can be recycled up to 12 times and showed good applicability to structurally various β-keto esters. The present study presents a novel approach for using ILs in asymmetric hydrogenation reactions in an environmentally friendly manner.

Scalable and Recyclable All-Organic Colloidal Cascade Catalysts.

Project description:We report on the synthesis of core-shell microparticles (CSMs) with an acid catalyst in the core and a base catalyst in the shell by surfactant-free emulsion polymerization (SFEP). The organocatalytic monomers were separately copolymerized in three synthetic steps allowing the spatial separation of incompatible acid and base catalysts within the CSMs. Importantly, a protected and thermo-decomposable sulfonate monomer was used as acid source to circumvent the neutralization of the base catalyst during shell formation, which was key to obtain stable, catalytically active CSMs. The catalysts showed excellent performance in an established one-pot model cascade reaction in various solvents (including water), which involved an acid-catalyzed deacetalization followed by a base-catalyzed Knoevenagel condensation. The CSMs are easily recycled, modified, and their synthesis is scalable, making them promising candidates for organocatalytic applications.

The central benzene ring directly linked to N and the hydroxyl group are disordered over two orientations [occupancies of 0.510 (16)/0.490 (16) and 0.528 (8)/0.472 (8), respectively]. The dihedral angle between the two aromatic rings is 23.3 (5)° for the major component and 18.3 (5)° for the minor component. There is an intra-molecular O-H⋯N hydrogen bond and mol-ecules are linked into chains along the a axis by O-H⋯O hydrogen bonds.
