Sodium sulfite heptahydrate and its relation to sodium carbonate heptahydrate.

ABSTRACT: The monoclinic crystal structure of Na2SO3(H2O)7 is characterized by an alternating stacking of (100) cationic sodium-water layers and anionic sulfite layers along [100]. The cationic layers are made up from two types of [Na(H2O)6] octahedra that form linear 1?[Na(H2O)4/2(H2O)2/1] chains linked by dimeric [Na(H2O)2/2(H2O)4/1]2 units on both sides of the chains. The isolated trigonal-pyramidal sulfite anions are connected to the cationic layers through an intricate network of O-H...O hydrogen bonds, together with a remarkable O-H...S hydrogen bond, with an O...S donor-acceptor distance of 3.2582?(6)?Å, which is about 0.05?Å shorter than the average for O-H...S hydrogen bonds in thiosalt hydrates and organic sulfur compounds of the type Y-S-Z (Y/Z = C, N, O or S). Structural relationships between monoclinic Na2SO3(H2O)7 and orthorhombic Na2CO3(H2O)7 are discussed in detail.

Crystal structure and characterization of magnesium carbonate chloride heptahydrate.

Project description:MgCO3·MgCl2·7H2O is the only known neutral magnesium carbonate containing chloride ions at ambient conditions. According to the literature, only small and twinned crystals of this double salt could be synthesised in a concentrated solution of MgCl2. For the crystal structure solution, single-crystal diffraction was carried out at a synchrotron radiation source. The monoclinic crystal structure (space group Cc) exhibits double chains of MgO octahedra linked by corners, connected by carbonate units and water molecules. The chloride ions are positioned between these double chains parallel to the (100) plane. Dry MgCO3·MgCl2·7H2O decomposes in the air to chlorartinite, Mg2(OH)Cl(CO3)·nH2O (n = 2 or 3). This work includes an extensive characterization of the title compound by powder X-ray diffraction, thermal analysis, SEM and vibrational spectroscopy.

Low-Dimensional Network Formation in Molten Sodium Carbonate.

Project description:Molten carbonates are highly inviscid liquids characterized by low melting points and high solubility of rare earth elements and volatile molecules. An understanding of the structure and related properties of these intriguing liquids has been limited to date. We report the results of a study of molten sodium carbonate (Na2CO3) which combines high energy X-ray diffraction, containerless techniques and computer simulation to provide insight into the liquid structure. Total structure factors (F(x)(Q)) are collected on the laser-heated carbonate spheres suspended in flowing gases of varying composition in an aerodynamic levitation furnace. The respective partial structure factor contributions to F(x)(Q) are obtained by performing molecular dynamics simulations treating the carbonate anions as flexible entities. The carbonate liquid structure is found to be heavily temperature-dependent. At low temperatures a low-dimensional carbonate chain network forms, at T = 1100 K for example ~55% of the C atoms form part of a chain. The mean chain lengths decrease as temperature is increased and as the chains become shorter the rotation of the carbonate anions becomes more rapid enhancing the diffusion of Na(+) ions.

Electron Paramagnetic Resonance Characterization of Sodium- and Carbonate-Containing Hydroxyapatite Cement.

Project description:Ionizing radiation-induced paramagnetic defects in calcified tissues like tooth enamel are indicators of irradiation dose. Hydroxyapatite (HA), the principal constituent in these materials, incorporates a variety of anions (CO32-, F-, Cl-, and SiO44-) and cations (Mn2+, Li+, Cu2+, Fe3+, Mg2+, and Na+) that directly or indirectly contribute to the formation of stable paramagnetic centers upon irradiation. Here, we used an underexploited synthesis method based on the ambient temperature setting reaction of a self-hardening calcium phosphate cement (CPC) to create carbonate-containing hydroxyapatite (CHA) and investigate its paramagnetic properties following γ-irradiation. Powder X-ray diffraction and IR spectroscopic characterization of the hardened CHA samples indicate the formation of pure B-type CHA cement. CHA samples exposed to γ-radiation doses ranging from 1 Gy to 150 kGy exhibited an electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) signal from an orthorhombic CO2•- free radical. At γ-radiation doses from 30 to 150 kGy, a second signal emerged that is assigned to the CO3•- free radical. We observed that the formation of this second species is dose-dependent, which provided a means to extend the useful dynamic range of irradiated CHA to doses >30 kGy. These results indicate that CHA synthesized via a CPC cement is a promising substrate for EPR-based dosimetry. Further studies on the CHA cement are underway to determine the suitability of these materials for a range of biological and industrial dosimetry applications.

Dataset of propylene carbonate based liquid electrolyte mixtures for sodium-ion cells.

Project description:In this manuscript, we present rheology, ionic conductivity, density, chromatography, and life cycle analysis data on the PC+X electrolyte system with and without LiClO4. In particular, the data are presented in contact with Na surfaces. In this case, photographic images of electrolyte-sodium mixtures are also shown. The data was analyzed using OriginPro software to visualize it in an appropriate manner. In our view, the data serve as comparative values, form a basis of a chromatography analysis and are also valuable for modeling. The analysis of the data is presented in the manuscript "Comprehensive characterization of propylene carbonate based liquid electrolyte mixtures for sodium-ion cells" [1].

Sodium carbonate extraction mass spectrometry reveals novel steps in mitochondrial respiratory chain complex III assembly

Project description:Mitochondria are complex organelles containing 13 proteins encoded by mitochondrial DNA and over 1000 proteins encoded on nuclear DNA. Many mitochondrial proteins are associated with the inner or outer mitochondrial membranes, either peripherally or as integral membrane proteins, while others reside in either of the two soluble mitochondrial compartments, the mitochondrial matrix and the intermembrane space. The biogenesis of the five complexes of the oxidative phosphorylation system are exemplars of this complexity. These large multi-subunit complexes are built through the tightly controlled coalescence of more than 80 proteins with both membrane integral and peripheral associations, with progression between different assembly steps dependent on soluble, membrane integral and peripherally associated assembly factor proteins. Understanding the membrane association of subunits and assembly factors during each assembly step is critical to understanding OXPHOS complex biogenesis. Here we couple sodium carbonate extraction with quantitative mass spectrometry to track changes in the membrane association of the mitochondrial proteome across multiple human complex III knockout cell lines. In addition to identifying the membrane association status of over 840 human mitochondrial proteins, we identify a previously undetected intermediate step of complex III biogenesis. Sodium carbonate extraction with quantitative mass spectrometry (SCE-MS) is thus an easy to apply tool with general utility in the study of mitochondrial respiratory chain biogenesis.

DIA proteomics of dried blood spot proteins by sodium carbonate

Project description:We developed a simple and sensitive analysis method for dried blood spot (DBS) proteins by sodium carbonate precipitation (SCP). We aimed to removing large amounts of hydrophilic blood proteins such as hemoglobin, albumin, fibrinogen and transferrin in DBS using a simple pretreatment with sodium carbonate solution, which concentrates membrane proteins. We evaluated the performance of the SCP method by comparing the LC-MS/MS results obtained for proteins prepared by SCP with those obtained by sodium dodecanate (SoDod) extract as total protein solubilized from DBS.

A super carbonate apatite (sCA) could deliver sufficient amounts of miRNA into the colorectum inflamed by dextran sodium sulfate (DSS) treatment

Project description:Purpose: A super carbonate apatite (sCA) nanoparticle is an in vivo pH-sensitive delivery system for siRNA and microRNA. These carriers accumulate specifically in tumors, yet they cause no serious adverse events in mice and monkeys. Systemic administration of sCA incorporating siRNA and microRNA has demonstrated superb tumor suppressive effects in vivo. We recently observed that sCA could deliver abundant nucleic acids to the inflammatory sites in rheumatoid arthritis mouse model. Based on the success, we tried to examine whether sCA could deliver sufficient amounts of miRNA into the colorectum inflamed by dextran sodium sulfate (DSS) treatment. Methods: We performed a RNA sequencing analysis of the DSS-treated colon walls. DSS was administered for 4 days and sCA-miR-29a, sCA-miR-29b, sCA-NC-miR was injected on days 1, 2, 3. On day 4, colorectum was removed and the mRNA samples were subject to the RNA sequencing analysis. Results: RNA sequencing of the rectum samples showed a number of enhanced or reduced gene expression in DSS treated NC-miR group on day 4 compared to normal mice. Such tendency of upregulation or downregulation was also noted in DSS-treated NC-miR group on day 2. Comparison of DSS treated samples on day 4 among NC-miR, miR-29a and miR-29b groups, revealed that several gene expression related to the interferon pathway was reversed by miR-29a or miR-29b towards the normal controls. These include Stat1, Stat2, IRF7, IRF9, and IFIT1. Conclusions: Many molecules in the interferon signaling pathway were activated in DSS-induced colitis on day 4 and Stat1, Stat2, IRF7, IRF9, and IFIT1 were key molecules in the interferon related pathways. These findings suggest that sCA-miR-29a or sCA-miR-29b may inhibit type 1 IFN and type 2 IFN pathways which are otherwise activated by DSS treatment.
