Motion-picture recording of ultrafast behavior of polarized light incident at Brewster's angle.

ABSTRACT: Observing light propagation plays an important role in clarifying ultrafast phenomena occurring on femtosecond to picosecond time scales. In particular, observing the ultrafast behavior of polarized light is useful for various fields. We have developed a technique based on Polarization Light-in-Flight Holography, which can record light propagation as a motion picture that can provide information about the polarization direction. Here we demonstrate motion-picture recording of a phenomenon, which is characteristic of polarized light, by using the proposed technique. As a phenomenon, we adopted the behavior of a light pulse incident at Brewster's angle. We succeeded in recording the light reflection of specific polarized light by the proposed optical setup. The method of recording the motion-picture, reconstruction procedure, and the quantitative evaluation of the results are demonstrated.

Ferroelectric domain wall motion induced by polarized light.

Project description:Ferroelectric materials exhibit spontaneous and stable polarization, which can usually be reoriented by an applied external electric field. The electrically switchable nature of this polarization is at the core of various ferroelectric devices. The motion of the associated domain walls provides the basis for ferroelectric memory, in which the storage of data bits is achieved by driving domain walls that separate regions with different polarization directions. Here we show the surprising ability to move ferroelectric domain walls of a BaTiO? single crystal by varying the polarization angle of a coherent light source. This unexpected coupling between polarized light and ferroelectric polarization modifies the stress induced in the BaTiO? at the domain wall, which is observed using in situ confocal Raman spectroscopy. This effect potentially leads to the non-contact remote control of ferroelectric domain walls by light.

Thermodynamic picture of ultrafast charge transport in graphene.

Project description:The outstanding charge transport properties of graphene enable numerous electronic applications of this remarkable material, many of which are expected to operate at ultrahigh speeds. In the regime of ultrafast, sub-picosecond electric fields, however, the very high conduction properties of graphene are not necessarily preserved, with the physical picture explaining this behaviour remaining unclear. Here we show that in graphene, the charge transport on an ultrafast timescale is determined by a simple thermodynamic balance maintained within the graphene electronic system acting as a thermalized electron gas. The energy of ultrafast electric fields applied to graphene is converted into the thermal energy of its entire charge carrier population, near-instantaneously raising the electronic temperature. The dynamic interplay between heating and cooling of the electron gas ultimately defines the ultrafast conductivity of graphene, which in a highly nonlinear manner depends on the dynamics and the strength of the applied electric fields.

?-oscillations modulated by picture naming and word reading: intracranial recording in epileptic patients.

Project description:We measured cortical gamma-oscillations in response to visual-language tasks consisting of picture naming and word reading in an effort to better understand human visual-language pathways.We studied six patients with focal epilepsy who underwent extraoperative electrocorticography (ECoG) recording. Patients were asked to overtly name images presented sequentially in the picture naming task and to overtly read written words in the reading task.Both tasks commonly elicited gamma-augmentation (maximally at 80-100 Hz) on ECoG in the occipital, inferior-occipital-temporal and inferior-Rolandic areas, bilaterally. Picture naming, compared to reading task, elicited greater gamma-augmentation in portions of pre-motor areas as well as occipital and inferior-occipital-temporal areas, bilaterally. In contrast, word reading elicited greater gamma-augmentation in portions of bilateral occipital, left occipital-temporal and left superior-posterior-parietal areas. Gamma-attenuation was elicited by both tasks in portions of posterior cingulate and ventral premotor-prefrontal areas bilaterally. The number of letters in a presented word was positively correlated to the degree of gamma-augmentation in the medial occipital areas.Gamma-augmentation measured on ECoG identified cortical areas commonly and differentially involved in picture naming and reading tasks. Longer words may activate the primary visual cortex for the more peripheral field.The present study increases our understanding of the visual-language pathways.

Tracking the ultrafast motion of an antiferromagnetic order parameter.

Project description:The unique functionalities of antiferromagnets offer promising routes to advance information technology. Their compensated magnetic order leads to spin resonances in the THz-regime, which suggest the possibility to coherently control antiferromagnetic (AFM) devices orders of magnitude faster than traditional electronics. However, the required time resolution, complex sublattice interactions and the relative inaccessibility of the AFM order parameter pose serious challenges to studying AFM spin dynamics. Here, we reveal the temporal evolution of an AFM order parameter directly in the time domain. We modulate the AFM order in hexagonal YMnO3 by coherent magnon excitation and track the ensuing motion of the AFM order parameter using time-resolved optical second-harmonic generation. The dynamic symmetry reduction by the moving order parameter allows us to separate electron dynamics from spin dynamics. As transient symmetry reductions are common to coherent excitations, we have a general tool for tracking the ultrafast motion of an AFM order parameter.

Color Space Transformation-Based Algorithm for Evaluation of Thermochromic Behavior of Cholesteric Liquid Crystals Using Polarized Light Microscopy.

Project description:Cholesteryl ester liquid crystals exhibit thermochromic properties related to the existence of a twisted nematic phase. When used in applications such as thermal mapping, a color change is often monitored by video cameras. Thus, quantitative methods to evaluate thermochromic behavior (e.g., blue-start, red-start, red-end, color play and bandwidth) from video analysis are desirable. However, obtaining quantitative color measurements from digital images remains a significant technical challenge, especially for highly reflective samples such as liquid crystals (for which ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) reflectance spectroscopy is typically used). We developed a method to determine thermochromic properties from videos of liquid crystal cooling under polarized light microscopy. We relate observed color transitions to quantifiable changes in the cumulative color difference in the International Commission on Illumination (CIE) L*a*b* color space and validate this method with UV-vis reflectance spectroscopy. The measured thermochromic behavior and associated measurement uncertainties (coefficient of variations) were comparable to UV-vis reflectance measurements.

Enantiospecific Desorption Triggered by Circularly Polarized Light.

Project description:The interest in enantioseparation and enantiopurification of chiral molecules has been drastically increasing over the past decades, since these are important steps in various disciplines such as pharmaceutical industry, asymmetric catalysis, and chiral sensing. By exposing racemic samples of BINOL (1,1'-bi-2-naphthol) coated onto achiral glass substrates to circularly polarized light, we unambiguously demonstrate that by controlling the handedness of circularly polarized light, preferential desorption of enantiomers can be achieved. There are currently no mechanisms known that would describe this phenomenon. Our observation together with a simplified phenomenological model suggests that the process of laser desorption needs to be further developed and the contribution of quantum mechanical processes should be revisited to account for these data. Asymmetric laser desorption provides us with a contamination-free technique for the enantioenrichment of chiral compounds.

Gamma activity modulated by picture and auditory naming tasks: intracranial recording in patients with focal epilepsy.

Project description:We measured the spatial, temporal and developmental patterns of gamma activity augmented by picture- and auditory-naming tasks and determined the clinical significance of naming-related gamma-augmentation.We studied 56 epileptic patients (age: 4-56 years) who underwent extraoperative electrocorticography. The picture-naming task consisted of naming of a visually-presented object; the auditory-naming task consisted of answering an auditorily-presented sentence question.Naming-related gamma-augmentation at 50-120 Hz involved the modality-specific sensory cortices during stimulus presentation and inferior-Rolandic regions during responses. Gamma-augmentation in the bilateral occipital and inferior/medial-temporal regions was more intense in the picture-naming than auditory-naming task, whereas that in the bilateral superior-temporal, left middle-temporal, left inferior-parietal, and left frontal regions was more intense in the auditory-naming task. Patients above 10 years old, compared to those younger, showed more extensive gamma-augmentation in the left dorsolateral-premotor region. Resection of sites showing naming-related gamma-augmentation in the left hemisphere assumed to contain essential language function was associated with increased risk of post-operative language deficits requiring speech therapy (p < 0.05).Measurement of gamma-augmentation elicited by either naming task was useful to predict postoperative language deficits.A smaller degree of frontal engagement in the picture-naming task can be explained by no requirement of syntactic processing or less working memory load. More extensive gamma-augmentation in the left dorsolateral-premotor region in older individuals may suggest more proficient processing by the mature brain.

Beyond the Classical Electron-Sharing and Dative Bond Picture: Case of the Spin-Polarized Bond.

Project description:Chemical bonds are traditionally assigned as electron-sharing or donor-acceptor/dative. External criteria such as the nature of the dissociation process, energy partitioning schemes, or quantum chemical topology are invoked to assess the bonding situation. However, for systems with marked multi-reference character, this binary categorization might not be precise enough to render the bonding properties. A third scenario can be foreseen: spin polarized bonds. To illustrate this, the case of a NaBH3 - cluster is presented. According to the analysis NaBH3 - exhibits a strong diradical character and cannot be classified as either electron-sharing or a dative bond. Elaborated upon are the common problems of popular bonding descriptions. Additionally, a simple model, based on the bond order and local spin indicators, which discriminates between all three bonding situations, is provided.

Incident angle of saltating particles in wind-blown sand.

Project description:Incident angle of saltating particles plays a very important role in aeolian events. In this paper, the incident angles of sand particles near the sand bed were measured in wind tunnel. It reveals that the incident angles range widely from 0° to 180° and thereby the means of angles are larger than published data. Surprisingly, it is found the proportion that angles of 5°-15° occupy is far below previous reports. The measuring height is probably the most important reason for the measurement differences between this study and previous investigations.

Oscillatory modulations in human fusiform cortex during motion-induced blindness: intracranial recording.

Project description:Motion-induced blindness (MIB) is an illusory phenomenon, in which a static target surrounded by moving distracters is perceived to disappear. We determined the electrocorticographic (ECoG) correlates of MIB.While undergoing intracranial ECoG recording, a patient with focal epilepsy was instructed to report the transitions of a visual target, which was designed to illusorily or physically disappear and reappear. We then determined the neural modulations associated with illusory and physical transitions of the target. We also tested whether the phase of local delta activity could predict exclusively illusory transitions.High-gamma activity at 80-150 Hz was attenuated in the fusiform region prior to the reports of illusory and real visual target disappearance. Conversely, such high-gamma activity was augmented prior to the report of real target reappearance. Exclusively around illusory disappearance but not around real one, the delta phases in the fusiform region showed a highly skewed distribution with preference of the negative peak.Neuronal modulations in the fusiform region may be involved in visual awareness, while spontaneous fluctuations of neural states entrained on delta rhythm may be involved in generation of MIB.Our study increases our understanding of the mechanisms of visual awareness.
