Twenty-six additional new combinations in the Magnolia (Magnoliaceae) of China and Vietnam.

ABSTRACT: In accordance with the previous reduction of the remaining genera of subfamily Magnolioideae (Magnoliaceae) into the genus Magnolia, twenty-six new nomenclatural combinations are formally made by transferring to Magnolia some additional Chinese and Vietnamese taxa from the segregate genera of Manglietia, Michelia and Yulania. The following nine new combinations are created from Manglietia, namely Magnolia admirabilis, M. albistaminea, M. guangnanica, M. jinggangshanensis, M. maguanica, M. pubipedunculata, M. pubipetala, M. rufisyncarpa and M. sinoconifera. Also, twelve new combinations are created from Michelia, namely Magnolia caloptila, M. caudata, M. fallax, M. gelida, M. hunanensis, M. maudiae var. rubicunda, M. multitepala, M. platypetala, M. rubriflora, M. septipetala, M. sonlaensis, M. xinningia. Finally, five new combinations are created from Yulania, namely Magnolia baotaina, M. pendula, M. pilocarpa var. ellipticifolia, M. puberula and M. urceolata.

Project description:Plants in Michelia, presented by Magnolia figo DC, are wonderful resources in Magnoliaceae, covering a series of aromatic plants. Despite extensive studies in this family, the M. figo complete chloroplast genome and the taxonomical status based on the whole chloroplast sequences remain unclear. Herein, we report the complete chloroplast genome of M. figo. The chloroplast genome was 160,113 bp in length, with a large single-copy (LSC) region of 88,113 bp and a small single-copy (SSC) region of 18,797 bp, separated by two inverted repeat (protein-coding) regions of 26,602 bp. A total of 135 CDSs were found, including 129 genes, 85 protein-coding mRNAs, 36 tRNA genes, and eight rRNA genes. The overall GC content was 39.3%, and GC percentages range from 34.3% to 43.2% throughout LSC, IRs, and SSC regions. Phylogenetic analysis showed that M. figo is most closely to Michelia odora and displayed a relationship that three Michelia were nested inside Magnolia. This announcement of the complete M. figo cp genome sequence could provide valuable information for further breeding, cp genetic modification, and phylogenetic study in Magnoliaceae.

The complete chloroplast genome sequence of Magnolia coriacea (Magnoliaceae), a critically endangered endemic to China.

Project description:Magnolia coriacea, Chang et B. L. (Magnoliaceae) is a critically endangered tree, endemic to Yunnan province, China. In this study, the complete chloroplast genome of M. coriacea was sequenced and analyzed. The total chloroplast genome size of M. coriacea is 160,113 bp, including a pair of inverted repeat regions (IRs, 26,576 bp) separated by a large single-copy (LSC, 88,175 bp) region and a small single-copy region (SSC, 18,786 bp). The complete chloroplast genome contains 86 protein-coding (PCGs), 37 transfer RNA (tRNAs), and 8 ribosomal RNA (rRNAs) genes. The phylogenetic analysis showed that M. coriacea is closely related to M. cathcartii. This study contributes to the bioinformatics on the evolution, genetic, conservation, and molecular biology for future studies of Magnoliaceae.

Here we assembled and annotated the complete chloroplast (cp) genome of M. sinostellata. The chloroplast genome of M. sinostellata is 160,076 bp in length and encodes 79 protein-coding genes, 30 transfer RNA (tRNA) genes and four ribosomal RNA (rRNA) genes. The maximum-likelihood (ML) phylogenetic analysis result reveals that M. sinostellata is most closely related to M. biondii.

The chloroplast genome sequence of Magnolia kobus DC. (Magnoliaceae).

Project description:As an endangered species, Magnolia kobus is distributed in Jeju island in Korea with only about 500-1000 individuals. In this study, we presented a complete chloroplast genome of M. kobus which is 159,443 bp and has four sub-regions: 87,484 bp of large single copy and 18,783 bp of small single copy regions are separated by 26,588 bp of inverted repeat regions including 113 genes (79 unique genes, four rRNAs and 30 tRNAs). Phylogenetic analysis using chloroplast genomes showed that M. kobus is a sister of M. insignis and M. laevifolia clade.

Determination of chloroplast genome sequence of Magnolia ofeliae A. Vazquez & Cuevas (Magnoliaceae), an endangered Mexican Magnolia.

Project description:Magnolia ofeliae A. Vázquez & Cuevas, a plant species endemic to south Jalisco, Mexico, is a critically endangered (CR) species based on the IUCN Red List. In this study, we assembled its complete chloroplast (cp) genome. The total genome size of M. ofeliae was 159,839 bp including four subregions: a large single-copy (LSC) region of 88,027 bp and a small single-copy (SSC) region of 18,752 bp separated by a pair of identical inverted repeat regions (IRs) of 26,530 bp each. The GC content of the cp genome of M. ofeliae is 39.3%. The cp genome encoded a set of 113 genes, containing 79 protein-coding genes, 30 tRNA genes, and four rRNA genes. Phylogenetic analysis results that M. ofeliae is a sister to all other magnolias in the subfamily Magnolioideae.

Manglietia pubipedunculata (Magnoliaceae), a new species from Yunnan, China.

Project description:A new species, Manglietia pubipedunculata Q. W. Zeng & X. M. Hu (Magnoliaceae) is described and illustrated from Yunnan, China. In addition to macromorphological examination, we comparatively studied on micromorphology of leaf epidermis, leaf structure, and epidermal cell on the sclerotesta. This new species is similar to M. kwangtungensis in terms of having dense pubescence, however, their pubescence are quite different. Manglietia pubipedunculata has appressed, compressed, shorter and sparser pubescence consisting of single or two cells. Moreover, it differs from M. kwangtungensis by showing shorter and thicker peduncles, longer styles, basal carpels covered with sparsely brown appressed pubescence, and more ovules per carpel. Furthermore, the new species has thinner leaves, brown and rugged surfaces on sclerotesta, and the alveolate cell pattern consisting of pentagon or hexagon cells with papilla on secondary cell wall under the observation by SEM. The phylogenetic analysis from two nuclear PHYA and LEAFY and chloroplast trnH-psbA sequences of 11 taxa reveals that M. pubipedunculata is a distinct species.

Characterization of the complete chloroplast genome of Magnolia wilsonii (Magnoliaceae).

Project description:The complete chloroplast (cp) genome of Magnolia wilsonii, an endangered and endemic species in China, was first reported in this study. The M. wilsonii cp genome was 157,434?bp in length, including two inverted repeat (IR) regions of 26,868?bp, a large single copy (LSC) region of 85,387?bp, and a small single copy (SSC) region of 18,311?bp. A total of 113 unique genes, including 79 protein-coding genes, 4 ribosomal RNA genes, and 30 transfer RNA genes, were annotated. The overall GC content was 38.8%. Phylogenetic analysis of 34 representative cp genomes within the genus Magnolia suggests that M. wilsonii was sister to M. sieboldii.

Project description:Magnolia omeiensis is an evergreen tree with 25 meters heights. It is distributed in tropical 1200-1300 m. Mount Emei. And it has been ranked as a CR (Critically Endangered) species in China. Here, we report and characterize the complete plastome of M. omeiensis in an effort to provide genomic resources useful for promoting its systematics research. The plastome of M. omeiensis is found to possess a total length 160,021 bp with the typical quadripartite structure of angiosperms, contains two Inverted Repeats (IRs) of 26,336 bp, a Large Single-Copy (LSC) region of 88,061 bp and a Small Single-Copy (SSC) region of 19,288 bp. The plastome contains 114 genes, consisting of 80 unique protein-coding genes, 30 unique tRNA genes and 4 unique rRNA genes. The overall A/T content in the plastome of M. omeiensis is 60.70%. The phylogenetic analysis indicated that M. omeiensis is close to Magnolia yunnanensis within Magnoliaceae in this study. The complete plastome sequence of M. omeiensis will provide a useful resource for the conservation genetics of this species as well as for the phylogenetic studies of Magnoliaceae.

Project description:Magnolia delavayi is a rare, famous ornamental and important medical tree endemic to China. Here, we assembled the complete chloroplast (cp) genome sequence of M. delavayi. Its length is 159,715 bp with four sub-regions: 87,906 bp of large single-copy region and 18,761 bp of small single-copy region are separated by two inverted repeats regions, each 26,524 bp. The genome contains 77 protein-coding genes, 6 rRNAs, and 29 tRNAs genes. Phylogenetic analysis of cp genome of M. delavayi with previously reported chloroplast genomes in Magnolia shows that M. delavayi is close to M. odoratissima with high bootstrap value.

The Complete Plastid Genome of Magnolia zenii and Genetic Comparison to Magnoliaceae species.

Project description:Magnoliazenii is a critically endangered species known from only 18 trees that survive on Baohua Mountain in Jiangsu province, China. Little information is available regarding its molecular biology, with no genomic study performed on M.zenii until now. We determined the complete plastid genome of M.zenii and identified microsatellites. Whole sequence alignment and phylogenetic analysis using BI and ML methods were also conducted. The plastome of M.zenii was 160,048 bp long with 39.2% GC content and included a pair of inverted repeats (IRs) of 26,596 bp that separated a large single-copy (LSC) region of 88,098 bp and a small single-copy (SSC) region of 18,757 bp. One hundred thirty genes were identified, of which 79 were protein-coding genes, 37 were transfer RNAs, and eight were ribosomal RNAs. Thirty seven simple sequence repeats (SSRs) were also identified. Comparative analyses of genome structure and sequence data of closely-related species revealed five mutation hotspots, useful for future phylogenetic research. Magnoliazenii was placed as sister to M.biondii with strong support in all analyses. Overall, this study providing M.zenii genomic resources will be beneficial for the evolutionary study and phylogenetic reconstruction of Magnoliaceae.
