A hydrodynamic analog of Friedel oscillations.

ABSTRACT: We present a macroscopic analog of an open quantum system, achieved with a classical pilot-wave system. Friedel oscillations are the angstrom-scale statistical signature of an impurity on a metal surface, concentric circular modulations in the probability density function of the surrounding electron sea. We consider a millimetric drop, propelled by its own wave field along the surface of a vibrating liquid bath, interacting with a submerged circular well. An ensemble of drop trajectories displays a statistical signature in the vicinity of the well that is strikingly similar to Friedel oscillations. The droplet trajectories reveal the dynamical roots of the emergent statistics. Our study elucidates a new mechanism for emergent quantum-like statistics in pilot-wave hydrodynamics and so suggests new directions for the nascent field of hydrodynamic quantum analogs.

An analog of Friedel oscillations in nanoconfined water.

Project description:Water confined in nanometer-scale crevices and cavities underpins a wide range of fundamental processes, such as capillary flow, ion transport and protein folding. However, how water responds within these confined spaces, with prevalent inhomogeneity built in or caused by impurities, is not well understood. Here, we show theoretically that water confined in one-dimensional nanochannels with localized perturbation exhibits pronounced density oscillations. The oscillations occur vividly like the Friedel oscillations in electron density resulting from defects in metals. A model analysis reveals that the density oscillations result from the perturbation-induced molecular scattering that is augmented by the confinement-enhanced correlation of water dipoles. This renders the oscillations a general behavior independent of the channel geometries and specific forms of the perturbation. Under confinements comparable to biological ion channels, such oscillations can strikingly extend over 10 nm, resulting in non-trivial effects at large distances that, for example, repel all ions from the channels with their long-range force. These results deepen the understanding of biological functions and inspire new applications in a variety of domains, such as ionic sensing and seawater desalination.

Hydrodynamic instabilities provide a generic route to spontaneous biomimetic oscillations in chemomechanically active filaments.

Project description:Non-equilibrium processes which convert chemical energy into mechanical motion enable the motility of organisms. Bundles of inextensible filaments driven by energy transduction of molecular motors form essential components of micron-scale motility engines like cilia and flagella. The mimicry of cilia-like motion in recent experiments on synthetic active filaments supports the idea that generic physical mechanisms may be sufficient to generate such motion. Here we show, theoretically, that the competition between the destabilising effect of hydrodynamic interactions induced by force-free and torque-free chemomechanically active flows, and the stabilising effect of nonlinear elasticity, provides a generic route to spontaneous oscillations in active filaments. These oscillations, reminiscent of prokaryotic and eukaryotic flagellar motion, are obtained without having to invoke structural complexity or biochemical regulation. This minimality implies that biomimetic oscillations, previously observed only in complex bundles of active filaments, can be replicated in simple chains of generic chemomechanically active beads.

Anisotropic Friedel oscillations in graphene-like materials: The Dirac point approximation in wave-number dependent quantities revisited.

Project description:Friedel oscillations of the graphene-like materials are investigated theoretically for low and intermediate Fermi energies. Numerical calculations have been performed within the random phase approximation. It was demonstrated that for intra-valley transitions the contribution of the different Dirac points in the wave-number dependent quantities is determined by the orientation of the wave-number in k-space. Therefore, identical contribution of the different Dirac points is not automatically guaranteed by the degeneracy of the Hamiltonian at these points. Meanwhile, it was shown that the contribution of the inter-valley transitions is always anisotropic even when the Dirac points coincide with the Fermi level (E F = 0). This means that the Dirac point approximation based studies could give the correct physics only at long wave length limit. The anisotropy of the static dielectric function reveals different contribution of the each Dirac point. Additionally, the anisotropic k-space dielectric function results in anisotropic Friedel oscillations in graphene-like materials. Increasing the Rashba interaction strength slightly modifies the Friedel oscillations in this family of materials. Anisotropy of the dielectric function in k-space is the clear manifestation of band anisotropy in the graphene-like systems.

Mechanochemical Friedel-Crafts acylations.

Project description:Friedel-Crafts (FC) acylation reactions were exploited in the preparation of ketone-functionalized aromatics. Environmentally more friendly, solvent-free mechanochemical reaction conditions of this industrially important reaction were developed. Reaction parameters such as FC catalyst, time, ratio of reagents and milling support were studied to establish the optimal reaction conditions. The scope of the reaction was explored by employment of different aromatic hydrocarbons in conjunction with anhydrides and acylation reagents. It was shown that certain FC-reactive aromatics could be effectively functionalized by FC acylations carried out under ball-milling conditions without the presence of a solvent. The reaction mechanism was studied by in situ Raman and ex situ IR spectroscopy.

Biocatalytic Friedel-Crafts Reactions.

Project description:Friedel-Crafts alkylation and acylation reactions are important methodologies in synthetic and industrial chemistry for the construction of aryl-alkyl and aryl-acyl linkages that are ubiquitous in bioactive molecules. Nature also exploits these reactions in many biosynthetic processes. Much work has been done to expand the synthetic application of these enzymes to unnatural substrates through directed evolution. The promise of such biocatalysts is their potential to supersede inefficient and toxic chemical approaches to these reactions, with mild operating conditions - the hallmark of enzymes. Complementary work has created many bio-hybrid Friedel-Crafts catalysts consisting of chemical catalysts anchored into biomolecular scaffolds, which display many of the same desirable characteristics. In this Review, we summarise these efforts, focussing on both mechanistic aspects and synthetic considerations, concluding with an overview of the frontiers of this field and routes towards more efficient and benign Friedel-Crafts reactions for the future of humankind.

Friedel-Crafts acylation with amides.

Project description:Friedel-Crafts acylation has been known since the 1870s, and it is an important organic synthetic reaction leading to aromatic ketone products. Friedel-Crafts acylation is usually performed with carboxylic acid chlorides or anhydrides, while amides are generally not useful substrates in these reactions. Despite being the least reactive carboxylic acid derivative, we have found a series of amides capable of providing aromatic ketones in good yields (55-96%, 17 examples). We propose a mechanism involving diminished C-N resonance through superelectrophilic activation and subsequent cleavage to acyl cations.

Hydrodynamic Hunters.

Project description:The Gram-negative Bdellovibrio bacteriovorus (BV) is a model bacterial predator that hunts other bacteria and may serve as a living antibiotic. Despite over 50 years since its discovery, it is suggested that BV probably collides into its prey at random. It remains unclear to what degree, if any, BV uses chemical cues to target its prey. The targeted search problem by the predator for its prey in three dimensions is a difficult problem: it requires the predator to sensitively detect prey and forecast its mobile prey's future position on the basis of previously detected signal. Here instead we find that rather than chemically detecting prey, hydrodynamics forces BV into regions high in prey density, thereby improving its odds of a chance collision with prey and ultimately reducing BV's search space for prey. We do so by showing that BV's dynamics are strongly influenced by self-generated hydrodynamic flow fields forcing BV onto surfaces and, for large enough defects on surfaces, forcing BV in orbital motion around these defects. Key experimental controls and calculations recapitulate the hydrodynamic origin of these behaviors. While BV's prey (Escherichia coli) are too small to trap BV in hydrodynamic orbit, the prey are also susceptible to their own hydrodynamic fields, substantially confining them to surfaces and defects where mobile predator and prey density is now dramatically enhanced. Colocalization, driven by hydrodynamics, ultimately reduces BV's search space for prey from three to two dimensions (on surfaces) even down to a single dimension (around defects). We conclude that BV's search for individual prey remains random, as suggested in the literature, but confined, however-by generic hydrodynamic forces-to reduced dimensionality.

Friedel-Crafts Type Methylation with Dimethylhalonium Salts.

Project description:The dimethylchloronium salt [Me2 Cl][Al(OTeF5 )4 ] is used to methylate electron-deficient aromatic systems in Friedel-Crafts type reactions as shown by the synthesis of N-methylated cations, such as [MeNC5 F5 ]+ , [MeNC5 F4 I]+ , and [MeN3 C3 F3 ]+ . To gain a better understanding of such fundamental Friedel-Crafts reactions, the role of the dimethylchloronium cation has been evaluated by quantum-chemical calculations.

Biocatalytic Friedel-Crafts Acylation and Fries Reaction.

Project description:The Friedel-Crafts acylation is commonly used for the synthesis of aryl ketones, and a biocatalytic version, which may benefit from the chemo- and regioselectivity of enzymes, has not yet been introduced. Described here is a bacterial acyltransferase which can catalyze Friedel-Crafts C-acylation of phenolic substrates in buffer without the need of CoA-activated reagents. Conversions reach up to >99 %, and various C- or O-acyl donors, such as DAPG or isopropenyl acetate, are accepted by this enzyme. Furthermore the enzyme enables a Fries rearrangement-like reaction of resorcinol derivatives. These findings open an avenue for the development of alternative and selective C-C bond formation methods.
