A Review on Current Development of Membranes for Oil Removal from Wastewaters.

ABSTRACT: The current situation with the problems associated with the removal of oil from wastewaters by membranes is being explored. Many types of membranes have been investigated-organic polymers, inorganic or ceramic species and hybrids of the two. Polymeric membranes can be designed to facilitate the passage of oil, but the more successful approach is with hydrophilic types that encourage the passage of water. Ceramic membranes have an advantage here as they are less often irreversibly fouled and give a higher recovery of oil, with a lower flux decline. Furthermore, they can be cleaned up by a simple heating procedure. More attention should be given to understanding the mechanism of fouling so that operating conditions can be optimised to further reduce fouling and further decrease the flux decline, as well as assisting in the design of antifouling membranes. Another obstacle to ceramic membrane use is the high cost of manufacture. Cheaper starting materials such as clays have been surveyed.

Dynamics and Kinetics of Cupric Ion Removal from Wastewaters by Tunisian Solid Crude Olive-Oil Waste.

Project description:The present paper aims to develop a low cost, efficient, and environmentally-friendly process to purify (industrial) waters contaminated by copper by the use of oil mill wastes, through kinetic, thermodynamic, and equilibrium investigations. To do so, the raw adsorbent was characterized using different analytical techniques including X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Then, the interaction between copper and olive residues were examined during batch adsorption tests at various operating parameters, such as pH, initial concentration, contact time, and particle size. Kinetic data were best fitted with Broeurs-Sotolongo kinetic model. Additionally, it was found that film and intraparticle diffusion steps controlled simultaneously the mass transfer of copper onto olive mill solid waste. Among the eight tested models, Broeurs-Sotolongo isotherm suited the most the sorption, with regards to the function errors analysis. It was deduced that the adsorption of copper does not involve chemical bonds with high energy which allows easier regeneration steps and higher number of biosorbent regeneration cycles without any need for applying high temperature in the desorption reaction systems. The adsorption capacity (18.93 mg/g) calculated on the basis of this model was close to the experimental value (18.4 mg/g) but more interestingly it brought up that 50% of the generated amounts of olive wastes in Tunisia could eliminate 1.84 kTons of copper from industrial waters.

Use of Bacterial Cellulose and Crosslinked Cellulose Nanofibers Membranes for Removal of Oil from Oil-in-Water Emulsions.

Project description:Abstract: Never-dried bacterial cellulose (BC) and crosslinked cellulose nanofibers (CNF) were used for the removal of oil from stabilized and non-stabilized oil-in-water emulsions with droplet sizes less than 1 µm. The CNF membranes were exchanged with isopropyl alcohol before drying. The microscopic structure of the prepared membranes was evaluated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM); the water flux and the rejection of oil were evaluated using a dead-end filtration cell. BC harvested after different incubation time periods (2 to 10 days) did not show a change in the width of the nanofibers, but only the thickness of the membranes was increased. Pure water flux was not affected as a result of increasing thicknesses of BC membranes harvested after 4⁻10 days while BC harvested after two days had significantly higher water flux than the others. BC showed a higher flux and efficiency in removing oil from oil emulsions than CNF membranes. Removal of oil by the different membranes from the non-stabilized oil emulsion was more efficient than from the stabilized one.

Magnetic Chitosan for the Removal of Sulfamethoxazole from Tertiary Wastewaters.

Project description:Magnetic chitosan nanoparticles, synthesized by in situ precipitation, have been used as adsorbents to remove sulfamethoxazole (SMX), a sulfonamide antibiotic dangerous due to its capacity to enter ecosystems. The adsorption of SMX has been carried out in the presence of tertiary wastewaters from a depuration plant to obtain more realistic results. The effect of pH on the adsorption capacity significantly changed when carrying out the experiments in the presence of wastewater. This change has been explained while taking into account the charge properties of both the antibiotic and the magnetic chitosan. The composition of wastewaters has been characterized and discussed as regards its effect on the adsorption capacity of the magnetic chitosan. The models of Elovich and Freundlich have been selected to describe the adsorption kinetics and the adsorption isotherms, respectively. The analysis of these models has suggested that the adsorption mechanism is based on strong chemical interactions between the SMX and the magnetic chitosan, leading to the formation of an SMX multilayer.

Green Adsorbents for Wastewaters: A Critical Review.

Project description:One of the most serious environmental problems is the existence of hazardous and toxic pollutants in industrial wastewaters. The major hindrance is the simultaneous existence of many/different types of pollutants as (i) dyes; (ii) heavy metals; (iii) phenols; (iv) pesticides and (v) pharmaceuticals. Adsorption is considered to be one of the most promising techniques for wastewater treatment over the last decades. The economic crisis of the 2000s led researchers to turn their interest in adsorbent materials with lower cost. In this review article, a new term will be introduced, which is called "green adsorption". Under this term, it is meant the low-cost materials originated from: (i) agricultural sources and by-products (fruits, vegetables, foods); (ii) agricultural residues and wastes; (iii) low-cost sources from which most complex adsorbents will be produced (i.e., activated carbons after pyrolysis of agricultural sources). These "green adsorbents" are expected to be inferior (regarding their adsorption capacity) to the super-adsorbents of previous literature (complex materials as modified chitosans, activated carbons, structurally-complex inorganic composite materials etc.), but their cost-potential makes them competitive. This review is a critical approach to green adsorption, discussing many different (maybe in some occasions doubtful) topics such as: (i) adsorption capacity; (ii) kinetic modeling (given the ultimate target to scale up the batch experimental data to fixed-bed column calculations for designing/optimizing commercial processes) and (iii) critical techno-economical data of green adsorption processes in order to scale-up experiments (from lab to industry) with economic analysis and perspectives of the use of green adsorbents.

Hybrid Silica Materials Applied for Fuchsine B Color Removal from Wastewaters.

Project description:Hybrid materials, with applications in fuchsine B color removal from wastewaters, were obtained by in situ incorporation of platinum nanoparticles and/or Pt-porphyrin derivatives into silica matrices. The inorganic silica matrices were synthesized by the sol-gel method, conducted in acid-base catalysis in two steps and further characterized by Nitrogen porosimetry, Small Angle Neutron Scattering (SANS), Scanning electron microscopy, Atomic force microscopy and UV-vis spectroscopy. All of the investigated silica hybrid materials were 100% efficient in removing fuchsine B if concentrations were lower than 1 × 10-5 M. For higher concentrations, the silica matrices containing platinum, either modified with Pt-metalloporphyrin or with platinum nanoparticles (PtNPs), are the most efficient materials for fuchsine B adsorption from wastewaters. It can be concluded that the presence of the platinum facilitates chemical interactions with the dye molecule through its amine functional groups. An excellent performance of 197.28 mg fuchsine B/g adsorbent material, in good agreement with the best values mentioned in literature, was achieved by PtNPs-silica material, capable of removing the dye from solutions of 5 × 10-4 M, even in still conditions.

Laccase-TEMPO as an Efficient System for Doxorubicin Removal from Wastewaters.

Project description:A large number of drugs are used to treat different diseases, and thus to improve the quality of life for humans. These represent a real ecological threat, as they end up in soil or ground waters in amounts that can affect the environment. Among these drugs, doxorubicin is a highly cytotoxic compound used as anticancer medicine. Doxorubicin can be efficiently removed from wastewater or polluted water using a simple enzymatic (biocatalytic) system, employing the oxidoreductase enzyme laccase and a stable organic nitroxide-free radical, TEMPO. Results presented in this work (as percentage of removal) were obtained at pH 5 and 7, after 2, 4, 6, and 24 h, using different ratios between doxorubicin, laccase, and TEMPO. It was shown that longer time, as well as an increased amount of catalyst, led to a higher percentage of removal, up to 100%. The influence of all these parameters is also discussed. In this way it was shown that the laccase-TEMPO biocatalytic system is highly efficient in the removal of the anticancer drug doxorubicin from wastewaters.

Tailored CNTs Buckypaper Membranes for the Removal of Humic Acid and Separation of Oil-in-Water Emulsions.

Project description:Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are a robust material and proven as a promising candidate for a wide range of electronic, optoelectronic and environmental applications. In this work, two different methods were utilized for the preparation of CNTs exhibiting different aspect ratios via chemical vapor deposition (CVD). The as-prepared CNTs were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), N2adsorption isotherms, thermogravimetric analysis and Raman spectroscopy in order to investigate their morphological and structural properties. Free-standing CNTs "buckypaper" membranes were fabricated, characterized and tailored to meet the requirements of two applications, i.e., (1) the removal of humic acid (HA) from water and (2) separation of oil-in-water emulsions. It was revealed that the hydrophobic buckypapers showed high separation performance for Shell oil-in-water emulsions filtration, with up to 98% through the accumulation of oil droplets onto the membrane surface. The absorption capacity of buckypaper membranes for various organic liquids (oil, chloroform and toluene) was evaluated over 10 absorption cycles to investigate their recyclability and robustness. Moreover, surface modification was introduced to the pristine CNTs to increase their surface hydrophilicity and improve the pure water permeability of buckypapers. These modified buckypapers showed high flux for HA solutions and excellent HA rejection efficiency up to 95%via size exclusion and electrostatic repulsion mechanisms.

Impact of Stability of Enriched Oil with Phenolic Extract from Olive Mill Wastewaters.

Project description:The disposal of olive mill wastewaters is a considerable subject for the development of a sustainable olive oil industry considering their high content of pollutants. Nevertheless, the selective extraction of phenolic compounds from olive mill wastewaters represents a promising approach to obtain phenolics suitable for food enrichment. This work aimed to evaluate the efficiency of phenolic extract addition (50 mg L-1), used as natural antioxidant, in sunflower oil against oxidative deterioration; to this aim, XAD-7-HP resin was tested in the recovery of phenolic compounds from olive mill wastewaters. Ultra-high performance liquid chromatography was used to evaluate the single phenols contained in the extract; the most consistent amount was detected for hydroxytyrosol (834 mg 100 ml-1). The change in the oxidation state of fortified sunflower oil was studied by measuring physicochemical (refractive index, peroxide value and oxidative resistance to degradation) and antioxidant parameters (DPPH, ABTS and ORAC assays) during 90 days of storage. Results showed an enhancement of oxidative stability of 50% in the fortified oil compared to control.

Removal of Scale-Forming Ions and Oil Traces from Oil Field Produced Water Using Graphene Oxide/Polyethersulfone and TiO<sub>2</sub> Nanoribbons/Polyethersulfone Nanofiltration Membranes.

Project description:Treatment of produced water in oil fields has become a tough challenge for oil producers. Nanofiltration, a promising method for water treatment, has been proposed as a solution. The phase inversion technique was used for the synthesis of nanofiltration membranes of polyethersulfone embedded with graphene oxide nanoparticles and polyethersulfone embedded with titanium nanoribbons. As a realistic situation, water samples taken from the oil field were filtered using synthetic membranes at an operating pressure of 0.3 MPa. Physiochemical properties such as water flux, membrane morphology, flux recovery ratio, pore size and hydrophilicity were investigated. Additionally, filtration efficiency for removal of constituent ions, oil traces in water removal, and fouling tendency were evaluated. The constituent ions of produced water act as the scaling agent which threatens the blocking of the reservoir bores of the disposal wells. Adding graphene oxide (GO) and titanium nanoribbons (TNR) to polyethersulfone (PES) enhanced filtration efficiency, water flux, and anti-fouling properties while also boosting hydrophilicity and porosity. The PES-0.7GO membrane has the best filtering performance, followed by the PES-0.7TNR and pure-PES membranes, with chloride salt rejection rates of 81%, 78%, and 35%; oil rejection rates of 88%, 85%, and 71%; and water fluxes of 85, 82, and 42.5 kg/m2 h, respectively. Because of its higher hydrophilicity and physicochemical qualities, the PES-0.7GO membrane outperformed the PES-0.7TNR membrane. Nanofiltration membranes embedded with nanomaterial described in this work revealed encouraging long-term performance for oil-in-water trace separation and scaling agent removal.

Development of Highly Efficient Oil-Water Separation Carbon Nanotube Membranes with Stimuli-Switchable Fluxes.

Project description:In this work, a carbon nanotube (CNT)-based membrane [(4-((4-((11-ferroceneundecyl)oxy)phenyl)diazenyl)phenoxy)-diethylene triamine (FADETA)/polyethyleneimine (PEI)-decorated CNT membrane] with stimuli-switchable separation fluxes was developed. The multiwalled CNTs were modified by a pH-, light-, and redox stimuli-responsive surfactant FADETA initially, and then the FADETA-decorated CNTs were further cross-linked by PEI and finally coated on the polypropylene membrane. Interestingly, the particular membrane was successfully applied in emulsion systems to separate oil and water with high efficiency. First, the FADETA-/PEI-decorated CNT membrane showed highly porous microstructural characteristics owing to the overlapped and cross-linked CNTs as confirmed by the scanning electron microscopy observation. Then, it showed strong hydrophilicity to water in the air and high oleophobicity to oil underwater, thereby endowing the membrane with the potential to separate oil and water. Owing to the modified multiple stimuli-responsive FADETA on CNTs, the separation fluxes were stimuli-switchable, which could be adjusted reversibly by environmental factors including pH, light, and redox.
