Clusters formation and fragmentation of nitromethane at 266 nm.

ABSTRACT: We carry out experiments on the fragmentation of nitromethane by multiphoton absorption at the wavelength 266 nm. This was conducted in a reflectron (Jordan), modified in the laboratory. Due to the large number of fragments, special care has been taken into the calibration of the system, in the simultaneity between the laser pulse and the sample, and the associated electronics to ensure that produced fragment spectra arise from the interaction laser-sample. We emphasize the next aspects of the method:•Simple design for introducing a gas sample at laser interaction region to facilitate the cluster formation•Astonishing number of fragments produced by multiphoton absorption.

Ultrafast inactivation of SARS-CoV-2 with 266 nm lasers.

Project description:Disinfection eliminates pathogenic microorganisms and ensures a biosafe environment for human beings. The rapid spread of COVID-19 is challenging traditional disinfection methods in terms of reducing harmful side effects and conducting faster processes. Spraying large-scale chemical disinfectants is harmful to individuals and the environment, while UV lamp and light-emitting diode (LED) disinfection still requires a long exposure time due to the low irradiance and highly divergent beam characteristics. Given that a laser maintains a high irradiance over a long distance, we studied the effectiveness of lasers as a new disinfection method, and the results show the capability for ultrafast inactivation of SARS-CoV-2 virus with a 266 nm laser. This work confirms UV lasers as a good candidate for disinfection.

Innovative finding of 266-nm laser regulating CD90 levels in SDSCs.

Project description:We used light to irradiate skin-derived stem cells and tried to find any cellular protein alterations 24 h after illumination. A 266-nm laser with four intensities was used, and of the nine cell markers that were surveyed in our trials, only CD90 was downregulated at an intensity of 20 μJ for 10 s. Repeated illuminations from the 266-nm laser at seven intensities revealed that CD90 expression was downregulated 14.6-28.8%, depending on light intensity. The maximal effect was noted at an intensity of 30 μJ for 2 s. This innovative finding reveals that a 266-nm laser can regulate protein expression in skin-derivative stem cells.

Meteoroid Fragmentation in the Martian Atmosphere and the Formation of Crater Clusters.

Project description:The current rate of small impacts on Mars is informed by more than one thousand impact sites formed in the last 20 years, detected in images of the martian surface. More than half of these impacts produced a cluster of small craters formed by fragmentation of the meteoroid in the martian atmosphere. The spatial distributions, number and sizes of craters in these clusters provide valuable constraints on the properties of the impacting meteoroid population as well as the meteoroid fragmentation process. In this paper, we use a recently compiled database of crater cluster observations to calibrate a model of meteoroid fragmentation in Mars' atmosphere and constrain key model parameters, including the lift coefficient and fragment separation velocity, as well as meteoroid property distributions. The model distribution of dynamic meteoroid strength that produces the best match to observations has a minimum strength of 10-90 kPa, a maximum strength of 3-6 MPa and a median strength of 0.2-0.5 MPa. An important feature of the model is that individual fragmentation events are able to produce fragments with a wide range of dynamic strengths as much as 10 times stronger or weaker than the parent fragment. The calibrated model suggests that the rate of small impacts on Mars is 1.5-4 times higher than recent observation-based estimates. It also shows how impactor properties relevant to seismic wave generation, such as the total impact momentum, can be inferred from cluster characteristics.

Aggregation-fragmentation and individual dynamics of active clusters.

Project description:A remarkable feature of active matter is the propensity to self-organize. One striking instance of this ability to generate spatial structures is the cluster phase, where clusters broadly distributed in size constantly move and evolve through particle exchange, breaking or merging. Here we propose an exhaustive description of the cluster dynamics in apolar active matter. Exploiting large statistics gathered on thousands of Janus colloids, we measure the aggregation and fragmentation rates and rationalize the resulting cluster size distribution and fluctuations. We also show that the motion of individual clusters is entirely consistent with a model positing random orientation of colloids. Our findings establish a simple, generic model of cluster phase, and pave the way for a thorough understanding of clustering in active matter.

Modeling on Fragmentation of Clusters inside a Mass Spectrometer.

Project description:Atmospheric clusters are weakly bound and can fragment inside the measuring instruments, in particular, mass spectrometers. Since the clusters accelerate under electric fields, the fragmentation cannot be described in terms of rate constants under equilibrium conditions. Using basic statistical principles, we have developed a model for fragmentation of clusters moving under an external force. The model describes an energy transfer to the cluster internal modes caused by collisions with residual carrier gas molecules. As soon as enough energy is accumulated in the cluster internal modes, it can fragment. The model can be used for interpreting experimental measurements by atmospheric pressure interface mass spectrometers.

Sub-3 nm Intermetallic Ordered Pt3In Clusters for Oxygen Reduction Reaction.

Project description:Industrial applications of Pt-based oxygen-reduction-reaction (ORR) catalysts are limited by high cost and low stability. Here, facile large-scale synthesis of sub-3-nm ordered Pt3In clusters on commercial carbon black as ORR catalyst that alleviates both these shortcomings is reported. As-prepared Pt3In/C exhibits a mass activity of 0.71 mA mg-1 and a specific area activity of 0.91 mA cm-2 at 0.9 V vs reversible hydrogen electrode, which are 4.1 and 2.7 times the corresponding values of commercial Pt/C catalysts. The as-prepared ordered Pt3In/C catalyst is also remarkably stable with negligible activity and structural decay after 20 000 accelerated electrochemical durability cycles, due to its ordered structure. Density-functional-theory calculations demonstrate that ordered-Pt3In is more energetically favorable for ORR than the commercial Pt/C catalysts because ?G O is closer to the peak of the volcano plot after ordered incorporation of indium atoms.

Fragmentation of outage clusters during the recovery of power distribution grids.

Project description:The understanding of recovery processes in power distribution grids is limited by the lack of realistic outage data, especially large-scale blackout datasets. By analyzing data from three electrical companies across the United States, we find that the recovery duration of an outage is connected with the downtime of its nearby outages and blackout intensity (defined as the peak number of outages during a blackout), but is independent of the number of customers affected. We present a cluster-based recovery framework to analytically characterize the dependence between outages, and interpret the dominant role blackout intensity plays in recovery. The recovery of blackouts is not random and has a universal pattern that is independent of the disruption cause, the post-disaster network structure, and the detailed repair strategy. Our study reveals that suppressing blackout intensity is a promising way to speed up restoration.

Electronic State Spectroscopy of Nitromethane and Nitroethane.

Project description:High-resolution photoabsorption cross-sections in the 3.7-10.8 eV energy range are reinvestigated for nitromethane (CH3NO2), while for nitroethane (C2H5NO2), they are reported for the first time. New absorption features are observed for both molecules which have been assigned to vibronic excitations of valence, Rydberg, and mixed valence-Rydberg characters. In comparison with nitromethane, nitroethane shows mainly broad absorption bands with diffuse structures, which can be interpreted as a result of the side-chain effect contributing to an increased number of internal degrees of freedom. New theoretical quantum chemical calculations performed at the time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) level were used to qualitatively help interpret the recorded photoabsorption spectra. From the photoabsorption cross-sections, photolysis lifetimes in the terrestrial atmosphere have been obtained for both compounds. Relevant internal conversion from Rydberg to valence character is noted for both molecules, while the nuclear dynamics of CH3NO2 and C2H5NO2 along the C-N reaction coordinate have been evaluated through potential energy curves at the TD-DFT level of theory, showing that the pre-dissociative character is more prevalent in nitromethane than in nitroethane.

Stabilization of ?-Synuclein Fibril Clusters Prevents Fragmentation and Reduces Seeding Activity and Toxicity.

Project description:Protein misfolding results in the accumulation of aggregated ?-sheet-rich structures in Parkinson's disease (PD) and Alzheimer's disease. The toxic oligomer hypothesis stipulates that prefibrillar assemblies, such as soluble oligomers or protofibrils, are responsible for the poor prognosis of these diseases. Previous studies demonstrated that a small molecule related to the natural compound orcein, O4, directly binds to amyloid-? fibrils and stabilizes them, accelerating the formation of end-stage mature fibrils. Here we demonstrate a similar phenomenon during O4 treatment of ?-synuclein (?syn) aggregates, the protein responsible for PD pathology. While the drug did not change the kinetics of aggregate formation as measured by the amyloidophilic dye thioflavin T, O4 depleted ?syn oligomers and promoted the formation of sodium dodecyl sulfate and proteinase K resistant aggregates consisting of large fibril clusters. These fibril clusters exhibited reduced toxicity to human neuronal model cells and reduced seeding activity in vitro. The effectiveness of O4 decreased when it was added at later points in the ?syn aggregation pathway, which suggests that the incorporation of O4 into fibril assemblies stabilizes them against chemical, enzymatic, and mechanic degradation. These findings suggest that small molecules, which stabilize amyloid fibrils, can prevent fibril fragmentation and seeding and consequently prevent prion-like replication of misfolded ?syn. Inhibiting prion replication by fibril stabilization could thus be a therapeutic strategy for PD.
