Data-based selection of creep constitutive models for high-Cr heat-resistant steel.

ABSTRACT: There are two types of creep constitutive equation, one with a steady-state term (steady-state type) and the other with no steady-state term (non-steady-state type). We applied the Bayesian inference framework in order to examine which type is supported by experimental creep curves for a Grade 91 (Gr.91) steel. The Bayesian free energy was significantly lower for the steady-state type under all the test conditions in the ranges of 50-90 MPa at 923 K, 90-160 MPa at 873 K and 170-240 MPa at 823 K, leading to the conclusion that the posterior probability was virtually 1.0. These findings mean that the experimental data supported the steady-state-type equation. The dependence of the evaluated steady-state creep rate on the applied stress indicates that there is a transition in the mechanism governing creep deformation around 120 MPa.

Project description:This article refers to the research article entitled "Creep-Fatigue of P92 in Service-Like Tests with Combined Stress- and Strain-Controlled Dwell Times" [1]. It presents experimental mechanical data from complex service-like creep-fatigue experiments performed isothermally at 620°C and a low strain amplitude of 0.2 % on tempered martensite-ferritic grade P92 steel. The datasets in text file format provide cyclic deformation (minimum and maximum stresses) and the total (hysteresis) data of all recorded fatigue cycles for three different creep-fatigue experiments: 1) a standard relaxation fatigue (RF) test with symmetrical dwell times of three minutes introduced at minimum and maximum strain, 2) a fully strain-controlled service-like relaxation (SLR) test combining these three-minute peak strain dwells with a 30-minute dwell in between at zero strain, and 3) a partly stress-controlled service-like creep (SLC) test combining the three-minute peak strain dwells with 30-minute dwells at constant stress. Such service-like (SL) tests with additional long-term stress- and strain-controlled dwell times are non-standard, rare, and expensive, making these data very valuable. They may be used to approximate cyclic softening in the technically relevant range, for the design of complex SL experiments, or for detailed analyses of stress-strain hystereses (e.g., for stress or strain partitioning methods, for the determination of hysteresis energies (work), inelastic strain components, etc.). In addition, the latter analyses may supply important input for advanced parametric lifetime modeling of components under creep-fatigue loading or model calibration parameters.

Creep Damage Assessment of Ex-Service 12% Cr Power Plant Steel Using Digital Image Correlation and Quantitative Microstructural Evaluation.

Project description:The lifetime of steam pipelines in long-term operation in coal-fired power plants are limited due to material damage that resulted from creep exposure. In the present study, the authors comparatively assess the damage of ex-service 12% Cr piping steel with varying degrees of exposure while using accelerated creep tests that employ digital image correlation (DIC) as well as microstructural investigation that is based on electron microscopy. The DIC technique, which allows multiple creep curves to be measured at temperatures ranging from 550-600 °C from a single specimen, revealed higher Zener-Hollomon parameters for a high damage material with a high void density when compared to a material with lower damage and lower void density. Both of the material states showed similar hardness values, subgrain sizes, and boundary character, despite the difference in void densities. Slightly higher inter-particle spacing of MX precipitates results in a lower threshold stress of 79 MPa for the high damage steel when compared to 97 MPa for the low damage material. Besides large Laves phase particles (>0.2 µm) that are found in the higher damaged materials that result in solid solution depletion, the most prominent microstructural damage indicator was a lower density of M23C6 precipitates. Therefore, the observations indicate that the Zener-Hollomon parameter and M23C6 particles are good damage assessment indicators between the most extreme damage states and they predict a lower damage level for a medium void density material.

Multiscale correlative tomography: an investigation of creep cavitation in 316 stainless steel.

Project description:Creep cavitation in an ex-service nuclear steam header Type 316 stainless steel sample is investigated through a multiscale tomography workflow spanning eight orders of magnitude, combining X-ray computed tomography (CT), plasma focused ion beam (FIB) scanning electron microscope (SEM) imaging and scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM) tomography. Guided by microscale X-ray CT, nanoscale X-ray CT is used to investigate the size and morphology of cavities at a triple point of grain boundaries. In order to understand the factors affecting the extent of cavitation, the orientation and crystallographic misorientation of each boundary is characterised using electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD). Additionally, in order to better understand boundary phase growth, the chemistry of a single boundary and its associated secondary phase precipitates is probed through STEM energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) tomography. The difference in cavitation of the three grain boundaries investigated suggests that the orientation of grain boundaries with respect to the direction of principal stress is important in the promotion of cavity formation.

Creep behavior of reinforced concrete-filled steel tubular columns under axial compression.

Project description:The reinforced concrete-filled steel tube (RCFST) column solves several of the problems of the concrete-filled steel tube (CFST) column in practical engineering applications. Moreover, RCFST has a simple joint structure, high bearing capacity, good ductility, and superior fire resistance. From a structural safety perspective, designers prioritize the creep performance of CFST members in structural design. Therefore, the creep behavior of RCFST columns should be thoroughly investigated in practical engineering design. To study the influence of the creep behavior of RCFST columns under axial compression, this work analyzed the mechanical behavior of composite columns based on their mechanical characteristics under axial compression and established a creep formula suitable for RCFST columns under axial compression. A creep analysis program was also developed to obtain the creep strain-time curve, and its correctness was verified by existing tests. On this basis, the effects of the main design parameters, such as the stress level, steel ratio, and reinforcement ratio, on the creep behavior were determined and analyzed. The creep of the tested composite columns increased rapidly in the early stages (28 days) of load action; the growth rate was relatively low after 28 days and tended to stabilize after approximately six months. The stress level had the greatest influence on the creep of RCFST columns under axial compression, followed by the steel ratio. The influence of the reinforcement ratio on the creep behavior was less. The results of this study can provide a reference for engineering practice.

Microstructure Evolution and Mechanical Properties of 0.4C-Si-Mn-Cr Steel during High Temperature Deformation.

Project description:Herein, the effects of height-diameter ratios (H/D) on the microstructure evolution and mechanical properties of 0.4C-Si-Mn-Cr steel during high temperature deformation are reported. The compression experiments were performed on steel samples using Gleeble to obtain a reasonable deformation temperature, and the degree of deformation was assessed in the range of 1.5 to 2.0 H/D via forging. The forged specimens were quenched using the same heat treatment process. The hardness and impact toughness of the steel samples were tested before and after heat treatment. Grain sizes gradually increased with an increase in the compression temperature from 950 °C to 1150 °C, and the grain sizes decreased with an increase in H/D. The microstructure of the steel samples contained pearlite, bainite, martensite, and retained austenite phase. The microstructure after forging was more uniform and finer as compared to that of as-cast steel samples. The hardness and impact toughness of the steel samples were evaluated after forging; hardness first increased and then decreased with an increase in H/D, while the impact toughness continuously increased with an increase in H/D. Hence, the microstructure and properties of steel could be improved via high temperature deformation, and this was primarily related to grain refinement.

Controlled variable selection in Weibull mixture cure models for high-dimensional data.

Project description:Medical breakthroughs in recent years have led to cures for many diseases. The mixture cure model (MCM) is a type of survival model that is often used when a cured fraction exists. Many have sought to identify genomic features associated with a time-to-event outcome which requires variable selection strategies for high-dimensional spaces. Unfortunately, currently few variable selection methods exist for MCMs especially when there are more predictors than samples. This study develops high-dimensional penalized Weibull MCMs, which allow for identification of prognostic factors associated with both cure status and/or survival. We demonstrated how such models may be estimated using two different iterative algorithms. The model-X knockoffs method was combined with these algorithms to control the false discovery rate (FDR) in variable selection. Through extensive simulation studies, our penalized MCMs have been shown to outperform alternative methods on multiple metrics and achieve high statistical power with FDR being controlled. In an acute myeloid leukemia (AML) application with gene expression data, our proposed approach identified 14 genes associated with potential cure and 12 genes with time-to-relapse, which may help inform treatment decisions for AML patients.

The Kubin-Estrin model was used to describe strain hardening of the material from the evolution of coupled dislocation densities of mobile and immobile forest dislocation. The data presented provide insight into the complex deformation behavior of lath martensitic steel.

The Constitutive Relationship for Corroded Steel Bars: Model and Analysis.

Project description:Combining the theoretical derivation and numerical calculations, the characteristic changes of the tensile constitutive relation of corroded steel bars and their underlying mechanisms are studied. Corroded steel bars are regarded as a combination of three parts, which include uncorroded part, corroded part with variable cross section, and uniform corroded part. It is assumed that in all three parts the steel material follows a simplified trilinear constitutive relation of a mild steel material (elasticity, yielding, and hardening), from which an analytical model describing the overall tensile constitutive relation of the corroded steel bar is developed. Based on the experimental data of slotted steel bars, the validation of the present analytical model is provided. The results show that the trilinear model can give relatively accurate prediction of the characteristic parameters of corroded steel bars. The influences of corrosion rate on the mechanical properties of corroded steel bars are examined using the proposed model.

Heat treatment control technology of high-strength steel gears based on support vector machine.

Project description:In the actual production process of gears often because of the selection of heat treatment parameters is unreasonable and can not accurately achieve the small deformation, high precision, less grinding machining allowance heat treatment sample requirements, there are uneven distribution of carburized layer, surface hardness, hardness of the heart can not meet the requirements of the indicators. At the present stage, the method of multi-parameter multi-level combination test block trial production is often used, but its production cycle is long, and the waste of human and material resources is serious. In this study, with the help of machine learning, a support vector machine prediction model of gear tissue distribution is constructed based on heat treatment parameters, and the radial basis functions kernel function is selected as the kernel function of the support vector machine to improve the accuracy of model prediction by optimizing the kernel parameters. The root mean square error value of the final model is 3.16%, and the coefficient of determination is 0.993. The results show that the method of this paper can accurately and efficiently predict the heat treatment results of gears, and save the manufacturing cycle and cost. The precise control of hardness, carburization layer distribution pattern and metallographic organization of ultra-high-strength steel gears can be realized in actual production.

A strategy to formulate data-driven constitutive models from random multiaxial experiments

Project description:We present a test technique and an accompanying computational framework to obtain data-driven, surrogate constitutive models that capture the response of isotropic, elastic–plastic materials loaded in-plane stress by combined normal and shear stresses. The surrogate models are based on feed-forward neural networks (NNs) predicting the evolution of state variables over arbitrary increments of strain. The feasibility of the approach is assessed by conducting virtual experiments, i.e. Finite Element (FE) simulations of the response of a hollow, cylindrical, thin-walled test specimen to random histories of imposed axial displacement and rotation. In these simulations, the specimen’s material is modelled as an isotropic, rate-independent elastic–plastic solid obeying J2 plasticity with isotropic hardening. The virtual experiments allow assembling a training dataset for the surrogate models. The accuracy of two different surrogate models is evaluated by performing predictions of the response of the material to the application of random multiaxial strain histories. Both models are found to be effective and to have comparable accuracy.
