Magnetic resonance sounding dataset of a hard-rock headwater catchment for assessing the vertical distribution of water contents in the subsurface.

ABSTRACT: Magnetic Resonance Sounding (MRS) measurements are acquired at 16 stations in the Strengbach headwater catchment (Vosges Mountains - France). These data, rendering the vertical distribution of water contents in the subsurface, are used to show their potential in conditioning a hydrological model of the catchment, as described in the article "Magnetic resonance sounding measurements as posterior information to condition hydrological model parameters: Application to a hard-rock headwater catchment" - Journal of Hydrology (2020). Acquisition protocols follow a free induction decay scheme. Data are filtered by applying a band-pass filter at the Larmor frequency. A filter removing the 50 Hz noise is also applied with the exception of data at a Larmor frequency close to the 50 Hz harmonic. The signal envelopes are then fitted by a decaying exponential function over time to estimate the median characteristic relaxation time of each MRS sounding.

Project description:The hillslope and channel dynamics that govern streamflow permanence in headwater systems have important implications for ecosystem functioning and downstream water quality. Recent advancements in process-based, semi-distributed hydrologic models that build upon empirical studies of streamflow permanence in well-monitored headwater catchments show promise for characterizing the dynamics of streamflow permanence in headwater systems. However, few process-based models consider the continuum of hillslope-stream network connectivity as a control on streamflow permanence in headwater systems. The objective of this study was to expand a process-based, catchment-scale hydrologic model to better understand the spatiotemporal dynamics of headwater streamflow permanence and to identify controls of streamflow expansion and contraction in a headwater network. Further, we aimed to develop an approach that enhanced the fidelity of model simulations, yet required little additional data, with the intent that the model might be later transferred to catchments with limited long-term and spatially explicit measurements. This approach facilitated network-scale estimates of the controls of streamflow expansion and contraction, albeit with higher degrees of uncertainty in individual reaches due to data constraints. Our model simulated that streamflow permanence was highly dynamic in first-order reaches with steep slopes and variable contributing areas. The simulated stream network length ranged from nearly 98±2% of the geomorphic channel extent during wet periods to nearly 50±10% during dry periods. The model identified a discharge threshold of approximately 1 mm d-1, above which the rate of streamflow expansion decreases by nearly an order of magnitude, indicating a lack of sensitivity of streamflow expansion to hydrologic forcing during high-flow periods. Overall, we demonstrate that process-based, catchment-scale models offer important insights on the controls of streamflow permanence, despite uncertainties and limitations of the model. We encourage researchers to increase data collection efforts and develop benchmarks to better evaluate such models.

Project description:A global warming-induced transition from glacial to periglacial processes has been identified in mountainous regions around the world. Degrading permafrost in pristine periglacial environments can produce acid rock drainage (ARD) and cause severe ecological damage in areas underlain by sulfide-bearing bedrock. Limnological and paleolimnological approaches were used to assess and compare ARDs generated by rock glaciers, a typical landform of the mountain permafrost domain, and their effects on alpine headwater lakes with similar morphometric features and underlying bedrock geology, but characterized by different intensities of frost action in their catchments during the year. We argue that ARD and its effects on lakes are more severe in the alpine periglacial belt with mean annual air temperatures (MAAT) between -2°C and +3°C, where groundwater persists in the liquid phase for most of the year, in contrast to ARD in the periglacial belt where frost action dominates (MAAT < -2°C). The findings clearly suggest that the ambient air temperature is an important factor affecting the ARD production in alpine periglacial environments. Applying the paleoecological analysis of morphological abnormalities in chironomids through the past millennium, we tested and rejected the hypothesis that unfavorable conditions for aquatic life in the ARD-stressed lakes are largely related to the temperature increase over recent decades, responsible for the enhanced release of ARD contaminants. Our results indicate that the ARDs generated in the catchments are of a long-lasting nature and the frequency of chironomid morphological deformities was significantly higher during the Little Ice Age (LIA) than during pre- or post-LIA periods, suggesting that lower water temperatures may increase the adverse impacts of ARD on aquatic invertebrates. This highlights that temperature-mediated modulations of the metabolism and life cycle of aquatic organisms should be considered when reconstructing long-term trends in the ecotoxicological state of lakes.

Project description:In order to study the fractal dynamic properties of uranium leach mining and discuss the influence of ore crushing on the dynamics of leach mining, uranium mine ore rocks in southern China were selected as the research object and an acid leaching experiment was performed on the ore samples with different fractal dimensions of 1.1, 1.4, 1.7, 2.0, 2.3 and 2.6. In the column leaching experiment, a PVC pipe with an inner diameter of 112 mm and a height of 1500 mm was used. The uranium content was determined by using titanium trioxide that was placed into a 0.1 mg ml-1 standard uranium solution, and a sampling rate of once daily with a 5 ml volume of leaching solution was adopted after 8 h drenching time. The results show that the flow rate of the leaching solution depends on the distribution of the ore's particle size, that is, a larger fractal dimension results in a smaller flow rate. The concentration of the uranium leaching solution reaches a maximum value which subsequently decreases with time on the third day of the experiment, and it seems that the changes in the uranium concentration tend to be stable at around 15 days. Moreover, the concentration seems to increase with the increasing fractal dimension, and the fractal dimension of the ore particle size has a significant impact on the leaching kinetics. When the fractal dimension is between 1.1 and 2.6, the uranium dissolution rate, K, increases with the increasing fractal dimension. The kinetic reaction of the uranium leaching is a liquid-solid one, which is controlled by chemical reactions in the earlier phase. While the middle reaction phase is mainly chemical-diffusion reaction coupling, and the latter part of the reaction is controlled by diffusion. As the fractal dimension increases, the liquid-solid reaction controlled by diffusion appears at earlier phases. When the fractal dimension is greater than 2.0, the time of entering the diffusion control phase only changed little with the increasing of the fractal dimension. At last, a fractal dimension of 2.0 is suggested for the acid leaching of uranium ore crushing.
