Problematic Facebook use and anxiety concerning use of social media in mothers and their offspring: An actor-partner interdependence model.

ABSTRACT: Previous research has shown significant and positive associations between social anxiety of parents and their adolescent offspring. The main aim of this study was to investigate this relationship in the social media (SM) context. We tested one hundred and fifty-two couples comprising mothers and their adolescent offspring (12-14 years old) on their levels of problematic Facebook use (PFU) and social anxiety concerning SM use. An actor-partner interdependence model highlighted the positive relationship between the PFU scores of mothers and their offspring on the levels of SM social anxiety in the offspring. We discuss the results in the context of intergenerational transfer of problematic technology use and social anxiety.

Using actor-partner interdependence modeling to understand HPV vaccine acceptance.

Project description:A wealth of scientific literature has been devoted to understanding what factors influence parents and their adolescent children to obtain the HPV vaccine. This literature is relatively uniform in its methodological approach of sampling individuals (i.e., either parents or adolescents) and examining the predictors of uptake for that individual. To improve understanding of HPV vaccination uptake, we sampled low-income, African American parent-child dyads with either a female (n = 93) or a male (n = 116) adolescent who had not been vaccinated. Both parents and children completed self-report measures that tapped intent to receive the vaccine and hypothesized predictors of intent (i.e., self-efficacy, beliefs about the vaccine, beliefs about HPV, knowledge of HPV). Using a dyadic analytic approach (i.e., the Actor-Partner Interdependence Model or APIM) [1], we found that parents and their adolescents have different structures of beliefs regarding HPV vaccination (i.e., they are empirically distinguishable). Consistent with prior research, the majority of predictors of an individual's own intention to vaccinate were individual-level variables; uniquely though, some predictors endorsed by one member of the dyad influenced the intentions held by the other member. Specifically, parents' reports of HPV severity and their self-efficacy were both associated with adolescents' intent to obtain the vaccine. Further, adolescents' beliefs that the vaccine will lead to greater promiscuity or be stigmatizing were associated with parents holding an increased intent to vaccinate. Use APIM improves understanding of HPV vaccination uptake and can be used to guide intervention efforts.

Communally coping with diabetes: An observational investigation using the actor-partner interdependence model.

Project description:Communal coping is a form of interpersonal coping that involves a shared illness appraisal and collaborating to address illness-related issues. We hypothesized that communal coping among couples in which one person is recently diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes would be related to better diabetes problem-solving, better mood, greater relationship quality, and less psychological distress for both partners. Communal coping was coded from videotaped interactions in which 119 heterosexual couples discussed difficulties in managing diabetes. Actor-partner interdependence models were performed to isolate associations of actor communal coping and partner communal coping with outcomes, and examined whether the couple-member had diabetes and sex as moderator variables. We expected that communal coping would be more beneficial for women than men, and that partner communal coping would be more strongly linked to outcomes than actor communal coping. Effect of resilience on infertile couples' quality of life: an actor-partner interdependence model approach.

Project description:BACKGROUND:Infertility is an emerging socioeconomic issue affecting an individual's life and the nation. However, only few studies have examined the influence of resilience on the quality of life (QoL) of spouses as actors and partners. Hence, this study aimed to analyze the influence of resilience, a positive factor that infertile couples may have, on QoL using the actor-partner interdependence model (APIM). METHODS:By the analyses of couples' data, we analyzed the effect of resilience on the QoL of infertile couples as actors and partners. This cross-sectional study included 150 infertile couples. The Fertility Quality of Life and Resilience Scale was used to measure couples' QoL and resilience. APIM was applied to analyze QoL. RESULTS:In terms of actor effects, the resilience of both wives (??=?0.201, p?<? 0.001) and husbands (??=?0.713, p?<? 0.001) had a significant effect on individual QoL. With regard to partner effects, husbands' resilience (??=?0.351, p?<? 0.001) had a significant impact on wives' QoL and the wives' resilience (??=?0.219, p?=?0.009) had a significant impact on husbands' QoL. CONCLUSIONS:The resilience of an infertile actor was found to affect both his/her own QoL and his/her partner's QoL. In the future, if a program is to be developed to improve couples' QoL, both spouses should work together to improve their resilience, thereby improving their QoL.

Friendship Conflict, Drinking to Cope, and Alcohol-Related Problems: A Longitudinal Actor-Partner Interdependence Model.

Project description:Drinking to cope with negative affect is a strong predictor of alcohol-related problems. We hypothesized that the association between friendship conflict and alcohol-related problems would be mediated by coping-with-depression motives in emerging adults' close friendships. We used a 4-wave, 4-month longitudinal self-report survey design measuring friendship conflict, coping motives, and alcohol-related problems from 174 same-sex friendship dyads. Participants were recruited from Nova Scotia, Canada between September 2016 and February 2019. Participants had a mean age of 18.66 (SD = 1.17) and were 66.1% female. Data were analyzed using multilevel structural equation modeling. Coping-with-depression motives mediated the link between conflict and alcohol-related problems at the between- and within-subject levels. Unexpectedly, coping-with-anxiety motives was an additional mediator at the within-subjects level. Interventions for emerging adults' problem drinking should consider the influence of friendship conflict and its impact on emerging adults' tendencies to drink to cope with both depression and anxiety. Day-level associations between drug use and sexual behavior in male couples: Actor partner interdependence modeling of timeline follow-back data.

Project description:BackgroundBoth marijuana and other illicit drugs (e.g., cocaine/crack, methamphetamines, ecstasy, gamma-hydroxybuterate, and ketamine) have been linked to the occurrence of condomless anal sex (CAS) with casual partners among sexual minority men (SMM) and these associations largely generalize to partnered SMM. Software advances now permit testing the day-level correspondence between participants' sexual behavior and their own drug use (actor effects) as well as their partners' (partner-effects).MethodsParticipants comprised 50 couples (100 individuals) recruited in the New York City metro area. All were 18 or older and identified as cis male. In each couple, at least one partner was 18-29 years old, HIV-negative, reported recent (past 30 day) drug use and recent (past 30 day) CAS with a casual partner or CAS with a non-monogamous or sero-discordant main partner at screening.ResultsMarijuana was associated with CAS between main partners on days both partners reported its use. A similar pattern was observed for other illicit drugs. Respondents were more likely to report CAS with casual partners on days CAS between main partners occurred. Both marijuana and other illicit drugs were associated with increased likelihood of CAS with casual partners on days a main partner did not use drugs. These associations were attenuated on days where partners reported the use of different drugs.ConclusionsThe co-occurrence of CAS with main and casual partners maximizes shared sexual risk. Results support the continued emphasis on dyadic HIV prevention interventions and the development of theoretically-based interventions that may address drug use by both partners in the relationship.

Enjoyment, self-efficacy, and physical activity within parent-adolescent dyads: Application of the actor-partner interdependence model.

Project description:It is unclear the role of salient psychosocial variables, such as physical activity (PA) enjoyment and self-efficacy, has on PA within parent-adolescent dyads. The purpose of this study was to examine the interdependent relationships among enjoyment, efficacy, and self-reported PA within parent-adolescent dyads using the Actor-Partner Interdependence Model (APIM). The sample consisted of 1854 parent-adolescent dyads enrolled in the Family Life, Activity, Sun, Health, and Eating (FLASHE) Study. A panel research organization invited panel members balanced to the US population on sex, Census division, household income and size, and race/ethnicity. Panel members were screened for eligibility and web-based surveys were administered to each selected parent-adolescent dyad. Each individual answered questions pertaining to PA enjoyment, PA self-efficacy, and reported weekly PA using validated questionnaires. Interrelationships among the observed variables were analyzed using APIM via a partially recursive path analysis. There was a significant correlation between parent and adolescent PA (r?=?0.15, p?<?0.001). Psychosocial variables explained more variance in adolescent PA (R2?=?0.252) than parent PA (R2?=?0.037) and the strongest standardized path coefficients were adolescent enjoyment (b?=?0.24; 95%CI: 0.18-0.29; p?<?0.001) and self-efficacy (b?=?0.27; 95%CI: 0.22-0.32; p?<?0.001) predicting adolescent PA. Adolescent- and parent-driven effects (0.7%-6.5%) and actor-driven effects (3.3%-5.7%) explained the majority of the systematic dyadic covariance in self-reported PA. There is a relatively strong association between adolescent enjoyment and self-efficacy with adolescent PA and the relationship between parent and adolescent self-reported PA is partially explained by parent and adolescent psychosocial variables and actor-driven effects within APIM.

Associations between body dissatisfaction and relationship functioning among same-sex female couples: An actor-partner interdependence model.

Project description:Nearly all past research about body dissatisfaction and romantic relationship factors is among heterosexual couples; little is known about these associations in sexual minority couples. The present study aimed to fill gaps in the current literature by using actor-partner interdependence models (APIMs) to examine dyadic patterns of association between body dissatisfaction and different aspects of relationship functioning among same-sex female couples. Participants were 163 same-sex female romantic dyads (326 women) between the ages of 18-35 years who completed measures of body dissatisfaction and relationship factors. Results from significance testing of actor and partner effects indicated higher levels of women's own body dissatisfaction were associated with lower levels of their own, but not their partner's, relationship satisfaction, closeness, sexual satisfaction, and intimacy/connectedness. Significance testing alone indicated that the association between one's own body dissatisfaction and their partner's relationship satisfaction was not significant. However, dyadic pattern testing identified a partner pattern for this effect, which suggests that the association between one's own body dissatisfaction and one's own relationship satisfaction is similar in magnitude and direction as that between an individuals' own body dissatisfaction and their partner's relationship satisfaction. In this study, women's own body dissatisfaction was found to be negatively associated with their own relationship functioning, which is consistent with findings of women in male-female couples. Thus, these findings highlight the important role that body dissatisfaction plays in women's relationship experiences. More research is needed to better understand potential cross-partner effects of body dissatisfaction and relationship factors in same-sex female couples. Project description:BackgroundPatients with prostate cancer (PC) and their spouses are confronted with several treatment-related and psychosocial challenges that can reduce their health-related quality of life (HRQoL). Patients with advanced PC (aPC) and their spouses are at highest risk for psychological distress and show lower HRQoL compared with couples in other phases. The aim of this study was to investigate the psychological interdependencies between HRQoL and anxiety, fear of progression (FoP), and depression in patients with aPC and their spouses.MethodsNinety-six heterosexual couples with aPC participated in this cross-sectional study. Patients and spouses provided information about anxiety and depression (Patient Health Questionnaire-4), fear of progression (short form of the Fear of Progression Questionnaire), and HRQoL (EORTC QoL-C30, version 3). Psychological interdependencies were analyzed with various actor-partner interdependence models using structural equation modeling.ResultsAnxiety, FoP, and depression were significant predictors of HRQoL for patients with aPC and their spouses (actor effects). Spouses' anxiety and FoP were negatively associated with patients' HRQoL (partner effects), showing that patients' HRQoL is associated with their own and their spouses' anxiety and FoP. No partner effect was revealed between depression and HRQoL in the patients or spouses.ConclusionsThe resulted partner effects between spouses and patients underline the importance of considering HRQoL in patients with aPC from a dyadic perspective. It is important that physicians explore patients' and spouses' needs and psychological burden to offer support and access to psycho-oncological services. Future studies are needed to investigate the effects of suitable interventions on spouses' anxiety and FoP.

Dyadic associations between perceived social support and cancer patient and caregiver health: An actor-partner interdependence modeling approach.

Project description:ObjectiveSocial support may have a positive impact on health outcomes for patients and caregivers, but the extent to which social support and health outcomes are interrelated for both is unknown. We examine the dyadic interrelationships between social support and health among cancer patients and their caregivers.MethodsLung and colorectal cancer (CRC) patient and caregiver dyadic data were obtained from the Cancer Care Outcomes Research and Surveillance Consortium. Patients and caregivers self-reported sociodemographic, social support, and caregiving characteristics at 5 (n = 218 lung; n = 222 CRC) or 12 months post-diagnosis (n = 198 lung; n = 290 CRC). Structural equation modeling was used to examine actor-partner interdependence models (APIM) of lung and CRC dyads at 5 and 12 months post-diagnosis.ResultsAt 5 months post-diagnosis, no interdependence between patient and caregiver social support was detected for CRC or lung dyads (all P > 0.05). At 12 months post diagnosis, no interdependence was detected for CRC dyads (all P > 0.70); lung dyads showed complete interdependence, indicating patient social support is associated with better caregiver self-reported health (β = 0.15, P < 0.001), and caregiver social support is associated with better patient self-reported health (β = 0.18, P < 0.001).ConclusionSocial support has a positive impact on patient and caregiver perceived health across the cancer trajectory, and these effects may differ by cancer site and time. Future research and translational efforts are needed to identify effective ways to bolster both patient and caregiver social support and to determine critical moments for intervention.

Examining fear of cancer recurrence in primary brain tumor patients and their caregivers using the Actor-Partner Interdependence Model.

Project description:ObjectiveFear of cancer recurrence (FCR) is related to psychological distress and poor quality of life in cancer patients and their caregivers. However, no studies have investigated FCR in neuro-oncology. Given the varied prognosis, treatment, and disease trajectory of brain cancer, FCR may affect patients and their caregivers differently.MethodsEighty adult primary brain tumor (PBT) patients and 52 caregivers completed questionnaires assessing FCR and psychological distress (depressive symptoms, generalized anxiety, and death anxiety). Differences in patient and caregiver FCR by demographic and medical characteristics were examined. Using multilevel modeling, the Actor-Partner Interdependence Model (APIM) was used to investigate the interrelationship between patient and caregiver FCR with demographics and psychological distress measures.ResultsCaregivers reported significantly higher FCR than patients. There were no effects of demographic or medical characteristics on patient FCR. Time since diagnosis was negatively related to caregiver FCR. All measures of psychological distress exerted a significant actor effect on FCR among both patients and caregivers. Two partner effects were found: caregiver depressive symptoms and death anxiety negatively predicted patients' FCR.ConclusionsThis is the first investigation of FCR in PBT patients and their caregivers. Most demographic and medical characteristics were not related to patient or caregiver FCR. Caregiver FCR may be higher at the time of diagnosis and decrease over time. APIMs revealed actor effects on patient and caregiver FCR for all measures of psychological distress. Results demonstrated the dyadic effects of a brain tumor diagnosis, emphasizing the need to include caregivers in psychotherapy for neuro-oncology patients.
