Gaming addiction and perceived stress among Saudi adolescents.

ABSTRACT: Introduction:Adolescents (age: 10-19 years) make up 15% of the Saudi population and have easy access to electronic gadgets and the Internet, yet data on gaming addiction among adolescents are negligible. We aimed to determine the prevalence of gaming addiction and its association with stress among Saudi school students. Methods:In this cross-sectional survey, 2675 school students (grades 7-12) from 40 randomly selected schools in four main cities of Al-Qassim province in Saudi Arabia participated. The questionnaire inquired about demography, lifestyle, gaming addiction (7-item Game Addiction Scale), and stress (10-item Perceived Stress Scale). Multinomial logistic regression assessed the association between gaming addiction (yes, no) and stress (high, moderate, low). Results:Participants' mean age was 16.1 (SD = 1.6) years; 50% were female; 64% reported >3 h of daily screen time; 5% were addicted to gaming; 11.4% had high-level stress. Addiction to gaming was strongly associated with stress in the adjusted analysis (moderate OR = 6.7, 95% CI = 2.9-15.5; high OR = 11.9, 95% CI = 4.7-30.1). Additionally, those who were older, female, had poor grades, unhealthy dietary habits, an inactive lifestyle, and smoked were more likely to experience high stress. Conclusions:Gaming addiction is strongly associated with stress among Saudi adolescents.

Project description:BackgroundInternet gaming disorder (IGD) was recently added in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorder as a "condition for further studies." There is no consensus regarding which rating scales should be used but many scholars suggest the GASA (Game Addiction Scale for Adolescents) and a ranking of the criteria, "the core approach" to avoid over-diagnosing of disordered gaming. Male gender and ADHD are commonly listed as risk factors for disordered gaming but little is known about sex differences in gaming and gender specific health correlates.PurposeThe present study aims to evaluate the core approach and the specific indicators of gaming behavior in GASA from a multifactorial perspective and explore the gender differences in a clinical setting, focusing on ADHD.Patients and methodsChildren and adolescents aged 8-18 years (n = 144) from Child and adolescent psychiatry (CAP) in Skane were assessed with the GASA. Psychometric analyses including confirmatory factor analyses (CFA) and structural equation modeling (SEM) were used to identify well-defined constructs and gender differences. Refined factor scores for single constructs were the outcome of alignment, a procedure for assessing measurement equivalence across gender. New model-based gaming behavior variables were used for descriptive statistics and ANOVA testing of gender differences.ResultsThe results confirm that the core approach two-factor model is valid for the CAP sample, as well as a theory based psycho-social model for gaming behavior with over consumption and negative social and emotional consequences. Our findings suggest that negative consequences of over consumption take a social direction for boys and an emotional direction for girls. Also, ADHD was significantly associated with over consumption of video games and the negative consequences thereof for girls.ConclusionGuided by psychometric analyses, the GASA could be strengthened by advancing the questionnaire design and by adding complementary items in order to illuminate the complexity of gaming behavior. Our findings suggest that additional research on potential gender related discrepancies of disordered gaming is needed.

Project description:Research investigating female gaming has begun to emerge despite gaming being traditionally more popular with males. Research in the 21st century has drawn attention to the role of women in culture, society, and technology, and female gaming is one of the growing phenomena not to have been researched in depth. The aim of the present paper was to review female gaming (i.e., the role of females within video game culture) and identify any associated psychopathological symptomatology. The review adapted the Sample, Phenomenon of Interest, Design, Evaluation, Research (SPIDER) model in conducting a narrative literature review. A search of three scientific electronic databases yielded 49 papers for further evaluation. From a methodological perspective, studies had to fulfill the following criteria to be included: i) published between the years 2000 and 2018; ii) assessed female gaming or the female position within gaming culture, iii) contained quantitative, qualitative, or mixed methods approaches to produce empirical data or discuss theoretical implications through reviews, iv) be retrievable as a full-text peer-reviewed journal paper, and v) published in English, German, Polish, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, or French. Four categories emerged from the papers: i) the benefits of female gaming, ii) why women might play video games less than men, iii) perceptions and realities of female characters within video games, and iv) women's position in gaming culture. The main findings showed playing video games has benefits for women in terms of enhancing cognitive, social, and physical abilities. However, they are less encouraged to play video games due to negative expectations based on gender and/or experiences during game play. Video games are associated with stereotypical male characteristics, such as being overly aggressive, and frequently contain sexualized content. Female gamers appear to require coping strategies to handle online harassment. Females look for different things in video games, which are not often included in game designs thereby limiting their abilities. For instance, female avatar representation-which is exaggerated and hypersexualized-can prompt social comparisons and lead to feelings of decreased self-esteem, depression, and other impacts on well-being. Overall, there are still obstacles for women playing video games even though they comprise half of the gaming population.
