When good for business is not good enough: Effects of pro-diversity beliefs and instrumentality of diversity on intergroup attitudes.

ABSTRACT: Instrumentality-based pro-diversity beliefs (i.e., beliefs that diverse groups outperform homogenous groups in terms of group functioning) have been shown to improve intergroup attitudes. However, such valuing of diversity due to its expected instrumentality holds the risk that outgroups may be devalued in situations when diversity ends up being detrimental to group functioning. Across four experiments, we studied the interplay between instrumentality-based pro-diversity beliefs, actual instrumentality of ethnic diversity, and outgroup attitudes. Our results do not reveal a robust interaction effect between instrumentality-based pro-diversity beliefs and actual instrumentality of diverse groups. Some evidence, however, supports the assumption that instrumentality-based pro-diversity beliefs yielded a weaker positive or even a negative effect on ethnic outgroup attitudes when ethnic diversity was perceived as non-instrumental (i.e., when diversity was perceived as having a negative impact on group functioning). Theoretical contributions, practical implications, and directions for future research are discussed.

Project description:This research explores reasons for the attitude-behavior gap of consumers involved with sustainable food choice. For this purpose, the Food Choice Process Model by was applied. The study follows a qualitative approach. Data were collected through ethnographical fieldwork. Over the course of nine months, researchers repeatedly accompanied six families. Each visit lasted several hours and included multiple in-depth discussions, food shopping observations and participation in everyday food behavior. Findings show that beliefs, positive attitudes, and behavioral intentions do play an important role for sustainable choice. Rooted in one's personal life course experiences and the socio-cultural conditions one grew up in, however, their determinacy is heavily impaired by household realities and by various personal and situational factors. Sustainability attributes, even if dominant on an abstract level, tend to be inferior for actual choice, especially when competing with the taste, price, and preferences of other household members. Product evaluation and food choice are seldomly a result of comprehensive information processing, but rather based on simplifications and strategies. Conflicts are aggravated by competing sustainability values and attributes. Confronted with diverse product-related, personal, external, and situational influences, sustainable choices come with conflicts, tensions, and ambivalences forcing participants to make compromises and remain flexible in their decisions. However, participants were aware of their inadequacies and accept personal inconsistencies, without showing much dissonance. This research extends current knowledge about the impact and the origin of attitudes towards and barriers for sustainable food choice behavior that help to understand the complexity of the phenomena in its natural setting. It points out practical implications for practitioners, updates the theoretical framework, and can widen researchers' perspective on sustainable food choice behavior.

Project description:BackgroundAddressing the Truth and Reconciliation Calls to Action on including anti-racism and cultural competency education is acknowledged within many health professional programs. However, little is known about the effects of a course related to Indigenous Peoples and colonialism on learners' beliefs about the causes of inequities and intergroup attitudes.MethodsA total of 335 learners across three course cohorts (in 2019, 2020, 2022) of health professional programs (e.g., Dentistry/Dental Hygiene, Medicine, Nursing, and Pharmacy) at a Canadian university completed a survey prior to and 3 months following an educational intervention. The survey assessed gender, age, cultural identity, political ideology, and health professional program along with learners' causal beliefs, blaming attitudes, support for social action and perceived professional responsibility to address inequities. Pre-post changes were assessed using mixed measures (Cohort x Time of measurement) analyses of variance, and demographic predictors of change were determined using multiple regression analyses. Pearson correlations were conducted to assess the relationship between the main outcome variables.ResultsOnly one cohort of learners reported change following the intervention, indicating greater awareness of the effects of historical aspects of colonialism on Indigenous Peoples inequities, but unexpectedly, expressed stronger blaming attitudes and less support for government social action and policy at the end of the course. When controlling for demographic variables, the strongest predictors of blaming attitudes towards Indigenous Peoples and lower support for government action were gender and health professional program. There was a negative correlation between historical factors and blaming attitudes suggesting that learners who were less willing to recognize the role of historical factors on health inequities were more likely to express blaming attitudes. Further, stronger support for government action or policies to address such inequities was associated with greater recognition of the causal effects of historical factors, and learners were less likely to express blaming attitudes.ConclusionThe findings with respect to blaming attitudes and lower support for government social action and policies suggested that educational interventions can have unexpected negative effects. As such, implementation of content to address the Truth and Reconciliation Commissions Calls to Action should be accompanied by rigorous research and evaluation that explore how attitudes are transformed across the health professional education journey to monitor intended and unintended effects.

Project description:Autoimmune liver diseases like autoimmune hepatitis, primary biliary cholangitis, primary sclerosing cholangitis, and IgG4-related cholangitis are chronic inflammatory diseases of the liver with an autoimmune background. The therapy of autoimmune hepatitis targets the autoreactive immune system and is largely dependent on the use of glucocorticoids and cytostatic drugs. In contrast, the treatment of cholestatic autoimmune liver diseases is restricted to the use of secondary or semi-synthetic bile acids, like ursodeoxycholic acid or obeticholic acid. Although the management of the disease using such drugs works well for the majority of patients, many individuals do not respond to standard therapy. In addition, chronic treatment with glucocorticoids results in well-known side effects. Further, the use of bile acids is a symptomatic therapy that has no direct immunomodulatory effect. Thus, there is still a lot of room for improvement. The use of animal models has facilitated to elucidate the pathogenesis of autoimmune liver diseases and many potential target structures for immunomodulatory therapies have been identified. In this review, we will focus on autoimmune hepatitis for which the first animal models have been established five decades ago, but still a precise treatment for autoimmune hepatitis, as obtainable for other autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis or multiple sclerosis has yet to be introduced. Thus, the question arises if our animal models are too far from the patient reality and thus findings from the models cannot be reliably translated to the patient. Several factors might be involved in this discrepancy. There is first and foremost the genetic background and the inbred status of the animals that is different from human patients. Here the use of humanized animals, such as transgenic mice, might reduce some of the differences. However, there are other factors, such as housing conditions, nutrition, and the microbiome that might also play an important role. This review will predominantly focus on the current status of animal models for autoimmune hepatitis and the possible ways to overcome discrepancies between model and patient.
