A harmonized global nighttime light dataset 1992-2018.

ABSTRACT: Nighttime light (NTL) data from the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP)/Operational Linescan System (OLS) and the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) on the Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership satellite provide a great opportunity for monitoring human activities from regional to global scales. Despite the valuable records of nightscape from DMSP (1992-2013) and VIIRS (2012-2018), the potential of the historical archive of NTL observations has not been fully explored because of the severe inconsistency between DMSP and VIIRS. In this study, we generated an integrated and consistent NTL dataset at the global scale by harmonizing the inter-calibrated NTL observations from the DMSP data and the simulated DMSP-like NTL observations from the VIIRS data. The generated global DMSP NTL time-series data (1992-2018) show consistent temporal trends. This temporally extended DMSP NTL dataset provides valuable support for various studies related to human activities such as electricity consumption and urban extent dynamics.

A consistent and corrected nighttime light dataset (CCNL 1992-2013) from DMSP-OLS data.

Project description:Remote sensing of nighttime light can observe the artificial lights at night on the planet's surface. The Defense Meteorological Satellite Program's Operational Line Scan (DMSP-OLS) data (1992-2013) provide planet-scale nighttime light data over a long-time span and have been widely used in areas such as urbanization monitoring, socio-economic parameters estimation, and disaster assessment. However, due to the lack of an on-board calibration system, sensor design defects, limited light detection range, and inadequate quantization levels, the applications of DMSP-OLS data are greatly limited by interannual inconsistency, saturation, and blooming problems. To address these issues, we used the power function model based on pseudo-invariant feature, the saturation correction method based on regression model and radiance-calibrated data (SARMRC), and the self-adjusting model (SEAM) to improve the quality of DMSP data, and generated a Consistent and Corrected Nighttime Light dataset (CCNL 1992-2013). CCNL dataset shows good performance in interannual consistency, spatial details of urban centers, and light blooming, which is helpful to fully explore the application potentials of long time series nighttime light data.

A spatially-explicit harmonized global dataset of critical infrastructure.

Project description:Critical infrastructure (CI) is fundamental for the functioning of a society and forms the backbone for socio-economic development. Natural and human-made threats, however, pose a major risk to CI. Therefore, geospatial data on the location of CI are fundamental for in-depth risk analyses, which are required to inform policy decisions aiming to reduce risk. We present a first-of-its-kind globally harmonized spatial dataset for the representation of CI. In this study, we: (1) collect and harmonize detailed geospatial data of the world's main CI systems into a single geospatial database; and (2) develop the Critical Infrastructure Spatial Index (CISI) to express the global spatial intensity of CI. The CISI aggregates high-resolution geospatial OpenStreetMap (OSM) data of 39 CI types that are categorized under seven overarching CI systems. The detailed geospatial data are rasterized into a harmonized and consistent dataset with a resolution of 0.10 × 0.10 and 0.25 × 0.25 degrees. The dataset can be applied to explore the current landscape of CI, identify CI hotspots, and as exposure input for large-scale risk assessments.

China's city-level carbon emissions during 1992-2017 based on the inter-calibration of nighttime light data.

Project description:Accurate, long-term, full-coverage carbon dioxide (CO2) data in units of prefecture-level cities are necessary for evaluations of CO2 emission reductions in China, which has become one of the world's largest carbon-emitting countries. This study develops a novel method to match satellite-based Defense Meteorological Satellite Program's Operational Landscan System (DMSP/OLS) and Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership's Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (NPP/VIIRS) nighttime light data, and estimates the CO2 emissions of 334 prefecture-level cities in China from 1992 to 2017. Results indicated that the eastern and coastal regions had higher carbon emissions, but their carbon intensity decreased more rapidly than other regions. Compared to previous studies, we provide the most extensive and long-term CO2 dataset to date, and these data will be of great value for further socioeconomic research. Specifically, this dataset provides a foundational data source for China's future CO2 research and emission reduction strategies. Additionally, the methodology can be applied to other regions around the world.

Evaluation of NPP-VIIRS Nighttime Light Data for Mapping Global Fossil Fuel Combustion CO2 Emissions: A Comparison with DMSP-OLS Nighttime Light Data.

Project description:Recently, the stable light products and radiance calibrated products from Defense Meteorological Satellite Program's (DMSP) Operational Linescan System (OLS) have been useful for mapping global fossil fuel carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions at fine spatial resolution. However, few studies on this subject were conducted with the new-generation nighttime light data from the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) sensor on the Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (NPP) Satellite, which has a higher spatial resolution and a wider radiometric detection range than the traditional DMSP-OLS nighttime light data. Therefore, this study performed the first evaluation of the potential of NPP-VIIRS data in estimating the spatial distributions of global CO2 emissions (excluding power plant emissions). Through a disaggregating model, three global emission maps were then derived from population counts and three different types of nighttime lights data (NPP-VIIRS, the stable light data and radiance calibrated data of DMSP-OLS) for a comparative analysis. The results compared with the reference data of land cover in Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou show that the emission areas of map from NPP-VIIRS data have higher spatial consistency of the artificial surfaces and exhibit a more reasonable distribution of CO2 emission than those of other two maps from DMSP-OLS data. Besides, in contrast to two maps from DMSP-OLS data, the emission map from NPP-VIIRS data is closer to the Vulcan inventory and exhibits a better agreement with the actual statistical data of CO2 emissions at the level of sub-administrative units of the United States. This study demonstrates that the NPP-VIIRS data can be a powerful tool for studying the spatial distributions of CO2 emissions, as well as the socioeconomic indicators at multiple scales.

A new global anthropogenic heat estimation based on high-resolution nighttime light data.

Project description:Consumption of fossil fuel resources leads to global warming and climate change. Apart from the negative impact of greenhouse gases on the climate, the increasing emission of anthropogenic heat from energy consumption also brings significant impacts on urban ecosystems and the surface energy balance. The objective of this work is to develop a new method of estimating the global anthropogenic heat budget and validate it on the global scale with a high precision and resolution dataset. A statistical algorithm was applied to estimate the annual mean anthropogenic heat (AH-DMSP) from 1992 to 2010 at 1×1 km2 spatial resolution for the entire planet. AH-DMSP was validated for both provincial and city scales, and results indicate that our dataset performs well at both scales. Compared with other global anthropogenic heat datasets, the AH-DMSP has a higher precision and finer spatial distribution. Although there are some limitations, the AH-DMSP could provide reliable, multi-scale anthropogenic heat information, which could be used for further research on regional or global climate change and urban ecosystems.

Population centroids of the world administrative units from nighttime lights 1992-2013.

Project description:Knowledge about the past, current and future distribution of the human population is fundamental for tackling many global challenges. Censuses are used to collect information about population within a specified spatial unit. The spatial units are usually arbitrarily defined and their numbers, size and shape tend to change over time. These issues make comparisons between areas and countries difficult. We have in related work proposed that the shape of the lit area derived from nighttime lights, weighted by its intensity can be used to analyse characteristics of the population distribution, such as the mean centre of population. We have processed global nighttime lights data for the period 1992-2013 and derived centroids for administrative levels 0-2 of the Database of Global Administrative Areas, corresponding to nations and two levels of sub-divisions, that can be used to analyse patterns of global or local population changes. The consistency of the produced dataset was investigated and distance between true population centres and derived centres are compared using Swedish census data as a benchmark.

A global 0.05° dataset for gross primary production of sunlit and shaded vegetation canopies from 1992 to 2020.

Project description:Distinguishing gross primary production of sunlit and shaded leaves (GPPsun and GPPshade) is crucial for improving our understanding of the underlying mechanisms regulating long-term GPP variations. Here we produce a global 0.05°, 8-day dataset for GPP, GPPshade and GPPsun over 1992-2020 using an updated two-leaf light use efficiency model (TL-LUE), which is driven by the GLOBMAP leaf area index, CRUJRA meteorology, and ESA-CCI land cover. Our products estimate the mean annual totals of global GPP, GPPsun, and GPPshade over 1992-2020 at 125.0 ± 3.8 (mean ± std) Pg C a-1, 50.5 ± 1.2 Pg C a-1, and 74.5 ± 2.6 Pg C a-1, respectively, in which EBF (evergreen broadleaf forest) and CRO (crops) contribute more than half of the totals. They show clear increasing trends over time, in which the trend of GPP (also GPPsun and GPPshade) for CRO is distinctively greatest, and that for DBF (deciduous broadleaf forest) is relatively large and GPPshade overwhelmingly outweighs GPPsun. This new dataset advances our in-depth understanding of large-scale carbon cycle processes and dynamics.

Harmonized disposable income dataset for Europe at subnational level.

Project description:In recent decades, detailed country-level estimates of income and wealth have become widely available and inform us about the evolution of inequality between and within countries. But a substantial portion of these available datasets lack sub-national geographical information, precluding the exploration of the spatial distribution and evolution of inequalities within countries. We present here a new dataset of disposable income for Europe at the subnational level. It has been compiled from existing income data (gross income, gross earnings, equivalised income, etc.) published by national statistical institutes at different geographical levels. We used linear regressions and numerical operations to estimate disposable income from other available socio-economic statistics (e.g. household size, tax rates). We developed a harmonization and adjustment procedures to ensure of the consistency of statistical units, income indicators, costs of living and inflation. The dataset covers 42 European countries distributed over more than 120,000 geographical entities on the 1995 to 2021 period (most of the data being available for the 2010-2020 decade). This new dataset opens avenues for investigating the links between income inequality and other socio-economic or ecological processes.

This decision can radically change used-car market in the EU, because Germany massive exports used cars to Eastern Europe. The database shows the influence of the Germany Court decision to the used-car market in Latvia, as part of the EU market. The database represents the used-car market monitoring in Latvia during 2018. In Latvia 20-22th. used-car are offered for sale each month. The database reflects the observation dynamics of 12 months. In the observations there are included main used-car characteristics such as price, first registration date, motor cubic capacity, motor type, gearbox type, mileage, color, producer (brand), model, body types, (following) technical inspection data, set (features) of cars and so on.

Outdoor Nighttime Light Exposure (Light Pollution) is Associated with Alzheimer's Disease.

Project description:Alzheimer's disease (AD) prevalence has increased in the last century which can be attributed to increased lifespan, but environment is also important. This study evaluated the relationship between outdoor nighttime light exposure and AD prevalence in the United States. Higher outdoor nighttime light was associated with higher prevalence of AD. While atrial fibrillation, diabetes, hyperlipidemia, hypertension, and stroke were associated more strongly with AD prevalence than nighttime light intensity, nighttime light was more strongly associated with AD prevalence than alcohol abuse, chronic kidney disease, depression, heart failure, and obesity. Startlingly, nighttime light exposure more strongly associated with AD prevalence in those under the age of 65 than any other disease factor examined. These data indicate a need to investigate how nighttime light exposure influences AD pathogenesis.
