The Contribution of Elastic Wave NDT to the Characterization of Modern Cementitious Media.

ABSTRACT: To mitigate autogenous shrinkage in cementitious materials and simultaneously preserve the material's mechanical performance, superabsorbent polymers and nanosilica are included in the mixture design. The use of the specific additives influences both the hydration process and the hardened microstructure, while autogenous healing of cracks can be stimulated. These three stages are monitored by means of non-destructive testing, showing the sensitivity of elastic waves to the occurring phenomena. Whereas the action of the superabsorbent polymers was evidenced by acoustic emission, the use of ultrasound revealed the differences in the developed microstructure and the self-healing of cracks by a comparison with more commonly performed mechanical tests. The ability of NDT to determine these various features renders it a promising measuring method for future characterization of innovative cementitious materials.

Elastic Response of Cementitious Gels to Polycation Addition.

Project description:The high compressive strength of cementitious materials stems from the creation of a percolated network of calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H) nanoparticles glued together by strong Ca2+-Ca2+ correlation forces. Although strong, the ion correlation force is short range and yields poor elastic properties (elastic limit and resilience). Here, the use of polycations to partially replace Ca2+ counterions and enhance the resilience of cementitious materials is reported. Adsorption isotherms, electrophoretic mobility, as well as small angle X-ray scattering and dynamic rheometry measurements, are performed on C-S-H gels, used as nonreactive models of cementitious systems, in the presence of different linear and branched polycations for various electrostatic coupling, that is, surface charge densities (pH) and Ca2+ concentrations. The critical strain of the C-S-H gels was found to be improved by up to 1 order of magnitude as a result of bridging forces. At high electrostatic coupling (real cement conditions), only branched polycations are found to improve the deformation at the elastic limit. The results were corroborated by Monte Carlo simulations.

Finite-element modelling of elastic wave propagation and scattering within heterogeneous media.

Project description:The scattering treated here arises when elastic waves propagate within a heterogeneous medium defined by random spatial fluctuation of its elastic properties. Whereas classical analytical studies are based on lower-order scattering assumptions, numerical methods conversely present no such limitations by inherently incorporating multiple scattering. Until now, studies have typically been limited to two or one dimension, however, owing to computational constraints. This article seizes recent advances to realize a finite-element formulation that solves the three-dimensional elastodynamic scattering problem. The developed methodology enables the fundamental behaviour of scattering in terms of attenuation and dispersion to be studied. In particular, the example of elastic waves propagating within polycrystalline materials is adopted, using Voronoi tessellations to randomly generate representative models. The numerically observed scattering is compared against entirely independent but well-established analytical scattering theory. The quantitative agreement is found to be excellent across previously unvisited scattering regimes; it is believed that this is the first quantitative validation of its kind which provides significant support towards the existence of the transitional scattering regime and facilitates future deployment of numerical methods for these problems.

Cavitation controls droplet sizes in elastic media.

Project description:Biological cells use droplets to separate components and spatially control their interior. Experiments demonstrate that the complex, crowded cellular environment affects the droplet arrangement and their sizes. To understand this behavior, we here construct a theoretical description of droplets growing in an elastic matrix, which is motivated by experiments in synthetic systems where monodisperse emulsions form during a temperature decrease. We show that large droplets only form when they break the surrounding matrix in a cavitation event. The energy barrier associated with cavitation stabilizes small droplets on the order of the mesh size and diminishes the stochastic effects of nucleation. Consequently, the cavitated droplets have similar sizes and highly correlated positions. In particular, we predict the density of cavitated droplets, which increases with faster cooling, as in the experiments. Our model also suggests how adjusting the cooling protocol and the density of nucleation sites affects the droplet size distribution. In summary, our theory explains how elastic matrices affect droplets in the synthetic system, and it provides a framework for understanding the biological case.

Generic stress rectification in nonlinear elastic media.

Project description:Stress propagation in nonlinear media is crucial in cell biology, where molecular motors exert anisotropic force dipoles on the fibrous cytoskeleton. While the force dipoles can be either contractile or expansile, a medium made of fibers which buckle under compression rectifies these stresses towards a biologically crucial contraction. A general understanding of this rectification phenomenon as a function of the medium's elasticity is however lacking. Here we use theoretical continuum elasticity to show that rectification is actually a very general effect in nonlinear materials subjected to anisotropic internal stresses. We analytically show that both bucklable and constitutively linear materials subjected to geometrical nonlinearities rectify small forces towards contraction, while granular-like materials rectify towards expansion. Using simulations, we moreover show that these results extend to larger forces. Beyond fiber networks, these results could shed light on the propagation of stresses in brittle or granular materials following a local plastic rearrangement.

Magnetic domain walls as broadband spin wave and elastic magnetisation wave emitters.

Project description:We report on the direct observation of spin wave and elastic wave emission from magnetic domain walls in ferromagnetic thin films. Driven by alternating homogeneous magnetic fields the magnetic domain walls act as coherent magnetisation wave sources. Directional and low damped elastic waves below and above the ferromagnetic resonance are excited. The wave vector of the magnetoelastically induced acoustic waves is tuned by varying the excitation frequency. The occurrence of elastic wave emission is proved by a combination of micromagnetic and mechanical finite element simulations. Domain wall emitted magnetostatic surface spin waves occur at higher frequencies, which characteristics are confirmed by micromagnetic simulations. The distinct modes of magnetisation wave excitation from micromagnetic objects are a general physical phenomenon relevant for dynamic magnetisation processes in structured magnetic films. Magnetic domain walls can act as reconfigurable antennas for spin wave and elastic wave generation. The wave orientation can be controlled separately via the domain wall orientation for elastic waves and via magnetization orientation for magnetostatic surface spin waves.

Multifunctional composites for elastic and electromagnetic wave propagation.

Project description:Composites are ideally suited to achieve desirable multifunctional effective properties since the best properties of different materials can be judiciously combined with designed microstructures. Here, we establish cross-property relations for two-phase composite media that link effective elastic and electromagnetic wave characteristics to one another, including the respective effective wave speeds and attenuation coefficients, which facilitate multifunctional material design. This is achieved by deriving accurate formulas for the effective electromagnetic and elastodynamic properties that depend on the wavelengths of the incident waves and the microstructure via the spectral density. Our formulas enable us to explore the wave characteristics of a broad class of disordered microstructures because they apply, unlike conventional formulas, to a wide range of incident wavelengths (i.e., well beyond the long-wavelength regime). This capability enables us to study the dynamic properties of exotic disordered "hyperuniform" composites that can have advantages over crystalline ones, such as nearly optimal, direction-independent properties and robustness against defects. We specifically show that disordered "stealthy" hyperuniform microstructures exhibit novel wave characteristics (e.g., low-pass filters that transmit waves "isotropically" up to a finite wavenumber). Our cross-property relations for the effective wave characteristics can be applied to design multifunctional composites via inverse techniques. Design examples include structural components that require high stiffness and electromagnetic absorption; heat sinks for central processing units and sound-absorbing housings for motors that have to efficiently emit thermal radiation and suppress mechanical vibrations; and nondestructive evaluation of the elastic moduli of materials from the effective dielectric response.

Tailored elastic surface to body wave Umklapp conversion.

Project description:Elastic waves guided along surfaces dominate applications in geophysics, ultrasonic inspection, mechanical vibration, and surface acoustic wave devices; precise manipulation of surface Rayleigh waves and their coupling with polarised body waves presents a challenge that offers to unlock the flexibility in wave transport required for efficient energy harvesting and vibration mitigation devices. We design elastic metasurfaces, consisting of a graded array of rod resonators attached to an elastic substrate that, together with critical insight from Umklapp scattering in phonon-electron systems, allow us to leverage the transfer of crystal momentum; we mode-convert Rayleigh surface waves into bulk waves that form tunable beams. Experiments, theory and simulation verify that these tailored Umklapp mechanisms play a key role in coupling surface Rayleigh waves to reversed bulk shear and compressional waves independently, thereby creating passive self-phased arrays allowing for tunable redirection and wave focusing within the bulk medium.

Octet lattice-based plate for elastic wave control.

Project description:Motivated by the importance of lattice structures in multiple fields, we numerically investigate the propagation of flexural waves in a thin reticulated plate augmented with two classes of metastructures for wave mitigation and guiding, namely metabarriers and metalenses. The cellular architecture of this plate invokes the well-known octet topology, while the metadevices rely on novel customized octets either comprising spherical masses added to the midpoint of their struts or variable node thickness. We numerically determine the dispersion curves of a doubly-periodic array of octets, which produce a broad bandgap whose underlying physics is elucidated and leveraged as a design paradigm, allowing the construction of a metabarrier effective for inhibiting the transmission of waves. More sophisticated effects emerge upon parametric analyses of the added masses and node thickness, leading to graded designs that spatially filter waves through an enlarged bandgap via rainbow trapping. Additionally, Luneburg and Maxwell metalenses are realized using the spatial modulation of the tuning parameters and numerically tested. Wavefronts impinging on these structures are progressively curved within the inhomogeneous media and steered toward a focal point. Our results yield new perspectives for the use of octet-like lattices, paving the way for promising applications in vibration isolation and energy focusing.

Designing 3D Digital Metamaterial for Elastic Waves: From Elastic Wave Polarizer to Vibration Control.

Project description:Elastic wave polarizers, which can filter out linearly polarized elastic waves from hybrid elastic waves, remain a challenge since elastic waves contain both transverse and longitudinal natures. Here, a tunable, digital, locally resonant metamaterial inspired by abacus is proposed, which consists of 3D-printed octahedral frames and built-in electromagnets. By controlling current in the electromagnets, each unit cell exhibits three digital modes, where the elastic waves have different characteristics of propagation under each mode. A variety of waveguides can be formed by a combination of the three modes and desired polarization can be further filtered out from hybrid elastic waves in a tunable manner. The underlying mechanism of these polarizer-like characteristics is investigated through a combination of theoretical analysis, numerical simulation, and experimental testing. This study provides a means of filtering out the desired wave from hybrid elastic waves, and offers promise for vibration control of particle distribution and flexible structure.

Comparative Study of Coupling Techniques in Lamb Wave Testing of Metallic and Cementitious Plates.

Project description:Lamb waves have emerged as a valuable tool to examine long plate-like structures in a faster way compared to conventional bulk wave techniques, which make them attractive in non-destructive testing. However, they present a multimodal and dispersive nature, which hinders signal identification. Oblique incidence is one of the most known methods to generate and receive Lamb waves and it is applied in different experimental arrangements with different types of sensors. In this work, several setups were conducted and compared to determine the optimal ones to launch and detect ultrasonic Lamb waves, especially in non-homogeneous specimens. The chosen arrangements were contact with angle beam transducers, immersion in a water tank, localised water coupling using conical containers and air coupling. Plates of two different materials were used, stainless steel and Portland cement mortar. Theoretical and experimental dispersion curves were compared to verify the existence of Lamb modes and good correspondence was achieved.
