Project description:Bowel cancer is the 3rd most common cancer in males and females. Most bowel cancers develop from precancerous polyps in the bowel. Colonoscopy can detect and remove these polyps, thereby reducing the risk of developing bowel cancer. However, colonoscopy is an invasive procedure with inherent risk, and can be both uncomfortable and embarrassing to undergo. The risks and numerous other barriers often mean colonoscopy, and cancer preventing polyp removal, is not performed.
The investigators aim to start the first in-human feasibility clinical investigation of a robotic magnetic colonoscope in 2021. The new device aims to reduce the discomfort and risk associated with colonoscopy. As part of the patient and end user involvement aspect of the project the investigators aim to perform a mixed methodology inductive type research project exploring experiences of colonoscopy for patient and endoscopists.
The study will follow an exploratory mixed methodology format with two parallel work-streams for patients and endoscopists. Each work-stream will consisting of a focus groups (1-2 for each patients and endoscopists), followed by 20 endoscopist and 30 patient in-depth interviews, then an online questionnaire. Each stage will be thematically analysed to form the semi-structured questions for the next stage. The target population will be endoscopists who perform colonoscopy and people who have undergone, or refused to undergo, a colonoscopy. Focus groups will be performed in groups of 6-10 participants, and both interview and focus groups will be performed via video/teleconferencing.

Project description:ObjectivesA survey conducted by the Spanish Lupus Federation (FELUPUS) shows the results on perceptions and experiences of the people who live with lupus in Spain. The information was gathered anonymously from May 21st to June 30th, 2020. The aim of the study was to monitor the impact of the disease on quality of life, as well as to measure the impact of organ damage in lupus patients.MethodsA national survey was conducted among people with lupus living in Spain who belong to the Spanish Lupus Patient Association (FELUPUS). Online interviews of approximately 25 min were completed. The information was gathered anonymously from May 21st to June 30th, 2020.ResultsOne thousand two hundred sixty-three interviews were completed. 92% had a diagnosis of Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) and 8% of Cutaneous Lupus Erythematosus (CLE); 95% of the patients surveyed were female. Most of the patients claimed they stay up late, exercising and work/study were the most limited actions due to the disease. 73% of patients considered that there was little knowledge of the disease by society and at the time of diagnosis, the patient's level of knowledge about lupus was low in 92% of them. Regarding organ damage, many patients did not understand the concept of chronicity and irreversibility of the term, relating it erroneously to acute symptoms like fatigue (38%), joint pain (47%) and even to the presence of cutaneous symptoms such as the presence of oral ulcers (17%).ConclusionsThe survey highlighted the need for disease awareness campaigns, greater involvement of healthcare professionals and the need to provide more information to lupus patients from the time of diagnosis. Nationally and to our knowledge, this is the survey with the largest number of participants (N = 1263) conducted in patients with lupus. Project description:College students' study strategies were explored by tracking the ways they navigated the websites of two large (Ns of 1384 and 671) online introductory psychology courses. Students' study patterns were measured analyzing the ways they clicked outside of the regularly scheduled class on study materials within the online Learning Management System. Three main effects emerged: studying course content materials (as opposed to course logistics materials) outside of class and higher grades are consistently correlated; studying at any time except in the late night/early morning hours was strongly correlated with grades; students with higher Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) scores made higher grades but accessed course materials at lower rates that those with lower SATs. Multiple regressions predicting grades using just SATs and click rates accounted for almost 43 and 36 percent of the grade variance for the Fall and Spring classes respectively. Implications for using click patterns to understand and shape student learning are discussed.

Project description:In a neurofeedback paradigm, trainees learn to willfully control their brain dynamics. How this is realized remains an open question. We evaluate the hypothesis that learning success is associated with a specific phenomenology. To address this proposal, we combined quantitative and qualitative analyses of a short neurofeedback training (NFT) session during which participants enhanced mid-frontal alpha power and were then subsequently interviewed about their experiences. We analyzed the electrophysiological data to determine learning success and classify trainees as learners and non-learners. The subjective experiences differed between the two groups and are best described along a trying-sensing continuum, with non-learners engaging effortfully with the task (e.g., "I will it [the bar] to move") whereas learners reported more sensing of their inner (e.g., "Something inside my stomach") and outer environment (e.g., "I was aware of the sound of the beeps"). In the process of piloting this mixed-method approach, we developed a classification system for the verbal reports. This system provides an explicit analytic framework which might guide future studies that aim to investigate the association between subjective experiences and NFT protocols.

Project description:Research data is increasingly viewed as an important scholarly output. While a growing body of studies have investigated researcher practices and perceptions related to data sharing, information about data-related practices throughout the research process (including data collection and analysis) remains largely anecdotal. Building on our previous study of data practices in neuroimaging research, we conducted a survey of data management practices in the field of psychology. Our survey included questions about the type(s) of data collected, the tools used for data analysis, practices related to data organization, maintaining documentation, backup procedures, and long-term archiving of research materials. Our results demonstrate the complexity of managing and sharing data in psychology. Data is collected in multifarious forms from human participants, analyzed using a range of software tools, and archived in formats that may become obsolete. As individuals, our participants demonstrated relatively good data management practices, however they also indicated that there was little standardization within their research group. Participants generally indicated that they were willing to change their current practices in light of new technologies, opportunities, or requirements.

Project description:Neuropharmacological effects of psychedelics have profound cognitive, emotional, and social effects that inspired the development of cultures and religions worldwide. Findings that psychedelics objectively and reliably produce mystical experiences press the question of the neuropharmacological mechanisms by which these highly significant experiences are produced by exogenous neurotransmitter analogs. Humans have a long evolutionary relationship with psychedelics, a consequence of psychedelics' selective effects for human cognitive abilities, exemplified in the information rich visionary experiences. Objective evidence that psychedelics produce classic mystical experiences, coupled with the finding that hallucinatory experiences can be induced by many non-drug mechanisms, illustrates the need for a common model of visionary effects. Several models implicate disturbances of normal regulatory processes in the brain as the underlying mechanisms responsible for the similarities of visionary experiences produced by psychedelic and other methods for altering consciousness. Similarities in psychedelic-induced visionary experiences and those produced by practices such as meditation and hypnosis and pathological conditions such as epilepsy indicate the need for a general model explaining visionary experiences. Common mechanisms underlying diverse alterations of consciousness involve the disruption of normal functions of the prefrontal cortex and default mode network (DMN). This interruption of ordinary control mechanisms allows for the release of thalamic and other lower brain discharges that stimulate a visual information representation system and release the effects of innate cognitive functions and operators. Converging forms of evidence support the hypothesis that the source of psychedelic experiences involves the emergence of these innate cognitive processes of lower brain systems, with visionary experiences resulting from the activation of innate processes based in the mirror neuron system (MNS).

Project description:The present study is the first to empirically test a hierarchical, positive-oriented model of the self and its relationship to second language (L2) achievement motivation, and compare it in three different cultural contexts of Japan, the United States, and Taiwan. Based on the L2 self-model (Lake, 2016), three levels of constructs were developed: Global Self (i.e., Flourishing, Curiosity, and Hope); Positive L2 domain self (i.e., interested-in-L2 self, harmonious passion for L2 learning, and mastery L2 goal orientation); and L2 Motivational Variables (i.e., reading, speaking and listening self-efficacy). A total of 667 students participated in this study, including 181 first-year college students in Japan, 159 high school students in Taiwan, and 327 community college students in the United States. All the participants were learning L2 in school. Results showed that the measures of positive global self, L2 domain self, and L2 motivational self all had a stronger relationship within their respective levels, and progressively weaker relationships as level of generality/specificity became more distal. Furthermore, the relationships among measures varied in the differing cultural contexts with the Japan-based student participants relatively lower on all measures. Implications for teacher educators in the L2 context have been discussed.

Project description:BACKGROUND: In 2010, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) implemented a national patient-centered care initiative that organized primary care into interdisciplinary teams of health care professionals to provide patient-centered, continuous, and coordinated care. OBJECTIVE: We assessed the discriminate validity of the Learners' Perceptions Survey-Primary Care (LPS-PC), a tool designed to measure residents' perceptions about their primary and patient-centered care experiences. METHODS: Between October 2010 and June 2011, the LPS-PC was administered to Loma Linda University Medical Center internal medicine residents assigned to continuity clinics at the VA Loma Linda Healthcare System (VALLHCS), a university setting, or the county hospital. Adjusted differences in satisfaction ratings across settings and over domains (patient- and family-centered care, faculty and preceptors, learning, clinical, work and physical environments, and personal experience) were computed using a generalized linear model. RESULTS: Our response rate was 86% (77 of 90). Residents were more satisfied with patient- and family-centered care at the VALLHCS than at either the university or county (P < .001). However, faculty and preceptors (odds ratio [OR] = 1.53), physical (OR = 1.29), and learning (OR = 1.28) environments had more impact on overall resident satisfaction than patient- and family-centered care (OR = 1.08). CONCLUSIONS: The LPS-PC demonstrated discriminate validity to assess residents' perceptions of their patient-centered clinical training experience across outpatient primary care settings at an internal medicine residency program. The largest difference in scores was the patient- and family-centered care domain, in which residents rated the VALLHCS much higher than the university or county sites.

Project description:Understanding the relationship between emotion and learning behavior is conducive to learners' well-being and effective learning. However, previous studies only regarded emotion as an additional variable, and there lacked specific research on academic emotion in the blended learning (BL) context. BL is characterized by systematic integration of online and face-to-face (F2F) learning, hence leading to special emotional experiences. What is the emotional experience of learners in online learning? What is it like face-to-face? Does the connection between the two have an impact on learners' emotional experience? In order to address these questions and explore the emotional profiles of learners in BL context, this study constructs a typical BL context in a Chinese university, and conducts questionnaire and focus group interviews with 89 participants at the end of the semester. Data analysis showed that learners' emotions of face-to-face classes are more intense than those of online learning, both positive and negative. As to positive emotions, paired-sample t-test shows that mean values of feeling of challenge, comfort, sense of community, satisfaction, enthusiasm and interest in F2F are significantly higher than those of online learning. About negative emotions, stress, embarrassment, tension and frustration of F2F are significantly stronger than those of online learning, while boredom and disappointment of online learning are more intense than those for F2F section. Theme analysis identified 11 influencing factors of academic emotions, among which degree of difficulty, readiness before class, workload, and interaction are unique to BL and deserve special attention. These findings help form a picture of learners' academic emotions in BL context. It also provides practical reference for BL course design, so as to inspire emotions which are conducive to effective and in-depth learning.

Project description:BackgroundMedical students in the United States undergo three significant transitions as they progress from pre-clinical to clinical rotations, to acting interns, and ultimately to first-year resident. However, there is limited understanding of whether the factors and strategies that impact these transitions remain consistent or are unique to each individual transition.MethodsQualitative data was collected from three Nominal Group Technique (NGT) sessions held separately for third-year students (M3), fourth-year students (M4), and first-year residents (PGY-1). The participants were asked to share their perceptions on their most recent medical school transition. These responses were independently coded into thematic categories.ResultsThe NGT session with M3 students (n = 9) identified 67 transition factors and 64 coping strategies. The M4 (n = 8) session identified 33 transition factors and 72 strategies to manage their transition. The PGY-1 (n = 5) session identified 28 factors and 25 strategies. The coping strategies for each session were categorized into seven themes and the transition factors were assigned to ten thematic categories.ConclusionJust as each transition is unique, so too are the number and variety of factors and strategies to manage each transition. Despite these differences, the themes of "Professional socialization" and "Prioritization, efficiency, and delegation" emerged as impactful in all three transitions.
