It's not about the money. EU funds, local opportunities, and Euroscepticism.

ABSTRACT: Growing Euroscepticism across the European Union (EU) leaves open questions as to what citizens expect to gain from EU Membership and what influences their dissent for EU integration. This paper looks at the EU Structural Funds, one of the largest and most visible expenditure items in the EU budget, to test their impact on electoral support for the EU. By leveraging the Referendum on Brexit held in the United Kingdom, a spatial RDD analysis offers causal evidence that EU money does not influence citizens' support for the EU. Conversely, the analysis shows that EU funds mitigate Euroscepticism only where they are coupled with tangible improvements in local labour market conditions, the ultimate objective of this form of EU intervention. Money cannot buy love for the EU, but its capacity to generate new local opportunities certainly can.

Biodiversity funds and conservation needs in the EU under climate change.

Project description:Despite ambitious biodiversity policy goals, less than a fifth of the European Union's (EU) legally protected species and habitats show a favorable conservation status. The recent EU biodiversity strategy recognizes that climate change adds to the challenge of halting biodiversity loss, and that an optimal distribution of financial resources is needed. Here, we analyze recent EU biodiversity funding from a climate change perspective. We compare the allocation of funds to the distribution of both current conservation priorities (within and beyond Natura 2000) and future conservation needs at the level of NUTS-2 regions, using modelled bird distributions as indicators of conservation value. We find that funding is reasonably well aligned with current conservation efforts but poorly fit with future needs under climate change, indicating obstacles for implementing adaptation measures. We suggest revising EU biodiversity funding instruments for the 2014-2020 budget period to better account for potential climate change impacts on biodiversity.

The payer's role in addressing the opioid epidemic: It's more than money.

Project description:BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE:County, State, and Federal agencies are addressing the public health opioid crisis. Ohio's 51 county-based Alcohol, Drug Addiction and Mental Health Services (ADAMHS) Boards finance and regulate opioid treatment services within their jurisdictions. This three-year comparative trial collaborated with ADAMHS Boards (n?=?14) to test the Advancing Recovery Framework, a suite of organizational and system change strategies designed to promote use of buprenorphine for opioid agonist therapy. METHODS:A multi-level intervention directed payers and treatment agencies to leverage their roles in increasing the use of buprenorphine. Half of the boards partnered with local substance use disorder treatment providers using the partnership strategies recommended by the Advancing Recovery (AR) framework. The comparison boards did not use the partnership strategies. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION:A logistic regression analysis detected increases in the number of patients receiving buprenorphine in both conditions. Buprenorphine use, as a percentage of patients with an opioid use disorder diagnosis, was significantly greater among the boards using the Advancing Recovery strategies during the three-year experimental period (odds ratio (OR) 1.63, 95% CI, 1.50 to 1.76, p?<?.001) and a one-year maintenance period (OR 2.13, 95% CI, 1.85 to 2.46, p?<?.001). Boards in both groups provided similar levels of financial support to implement and maintain buprenorphine prescribing. Strategy differences between the study conditions existed in use of a committee that facilitated payer-provider partnering and the ADAMHS boards setting expectations for using buprenorphine. Payer-provider partnerships achieved greater improvements and maximized the effectiveness of funding in increasing access to buprenorphine.

It's money! Real-world grant experience through a student-run, peer-reviewed program.

Project description:Grantsmanship is an integral component of surviving and thriving in academic science, especially in the current funding climate. Therefore, any additional opportunities to write, read, and review grants during graduate school may have lasting benefits on one's career. We present here our experience with a small, student-run grant program at Georgetown University Medical Center. Founded in 2010, this program has several goals: 1) to give graduate students an opportunity to conduct small, independent research projects; 2) to encourage graduate students to write grants early and often; and 3) to give graduate students an opportunity to review grants. In the 3 yr since the program's start, 28 applications have been submitted, 13 of which were funded for a total of $40,000. From funded grants, students have produced abstracts and manuscripts, generated data to support subsequent grant proposals, and made new professional contacts with collaborators. Above and beyond financial support, this program provided both applicants and reviewers an opportunity to improve their writing skills, professional development, and understanding of the grants process, as reflected in the outcome measures presented. With a small commitment of time and funding, other institutions could implement a program like this to the benefit of their graduate students.

NMNAT: It's an NAD+ synthase… It's a chaperone… It's a neuroprotector.

Project description:Nicotinamide mononucleotide adenylyl transferases (NMNATs) are a family of highly conserved proteins indispensable for cellular homeostasis. NMNATs are classically known for their enzymatic function of catalyzing NAD+ synthesis, but also have gained a reputation as essential neuronal maintenance factors. NMNAT deficiency has been associated with various human diseases with pronounced consequences on neural tissues, underscoring the importance of the neuronal maintenance and protective roles of these proteins. New mechanistic studies have challenged the role of NMNAT-catalyzed NAD+ production in delaying Wallerian degeneration and have specified new mechanisms of NMNAT's chaperone function critical for neuronal health. Progress in understanding the regulation of NMNAT has uncovered a neuronal stress response with great therapeutic promise for treating various neurodegenerative conditions.

It's all in the recipe: How to increase domestic leisure tourists' experiential loyalty to local food.

Project description:This study examines experiential loyalty in the context of local food consumption by domestic leisure tourists. A conceptual framework is developed to understand factors which increase tourists' propensity to exhibit experiential loyalty. Relationships between independent factors and the dependent variable of experiential loyalty are examined using a binary logistic regression model. The centrality of local food to tourists is the most important factor in increasing experiential loyalty, although cultural motivation and satisfaction are also predictors. The results provide insights for government and private tourism enterprises, with practical recommendations outlined.
