Project description:In this data article, we will present the data coming from 3D Inertial Measurement Unit (3-accelerometers and 3-gyroscopes sensors) mounted on the motorcycle collected during a motorcycle's falls experiments. Developing a motorcycle's fall events detection algorithms is a very challenging task because the motorcycle falling is multi-factorial and is strongly influenced by many unknown factors. To solve this issue, one solution can be to use a data-set collected during controlled experiments, knowing that the real motorcycle falls cannot be replicated, a stuntman can be chosen to be as close to reality as possible. The experiments have been conducted based on predefined scenarios such as: fall in a curve, fall on a slippery straight road section, fall with leaning of the motorcycle ''intentional manoeuvre'' and fall in a roundabout. These scenarios have been designed based on realistic falls. Other experiments have been conducted under different extreme driving situations. These extreme manoeuvres were carried out on track by professional riders. The purpose of performing these manoeuvres was to obtain a dataset describing the limit handling behaviour.

Project description:Automatic fall detection is a very active research area, which has grown explosively since the 2010s, especially focused on elderly care. Rapid detection of falls favors early awareness from the injured person, reducing a series of negative consequences in the health of the elderly. Currently, there are several fall detection systems (FDSs), mostly based on predictive and machine-learning approaches. These algorithms are based on different data sources, such as wearable devices, ambient-based sensors, or vision/camera-based approaches. While wearable devices like inertial measurement units (IMUs) and smartphones entail a dependence on their use, most image-based devices like Kinect sensors generate video recordings, which may affect the privacy of the user. Regardless of the device used, most of these FDSs have been tested only in controlled laboratory environments, and there are still no mass commercial FDS. The latter is partly due to the impossibility of counting, for ethical reasons, with datasets generated by falls of real older adults. All public datasets generated in laboratory are performed by young people, without considering the differences in acceleration and falling features of older adults. Given the above, this article presents the eHomeSeniors dataset, a new public dataset which is innovative in at least three aspects: first, it collects data from two different privacy-friendly infrared thermal sensors; second, it is constructed by two types of volunteers: normal young people (as usual) and performing artists, with the latter group assisted by a physiotherapist to emulate the real fall conditions of older adults; and third, the types of falls selected are the result of a thorough literature review.

Project description:This paper describes a dataset acquired on 8 subjects while simulating 13 types of falls and 5 types of Activities of Daily Living (ADL), each repeated 3 times. In details, data includes 4 simulated falls forward (falling on knees ending up lying, ending in lateral position, ending up lying, ending up lying with recovery), 4 backward (falling sitting ending up lying, ending in lateral position, ending up lying, ending up lying with recovery), 2 lateral right (ending up lying, ending up lying with recovery), 2 lateral left (ending up lying, ending up lying with recovery), and 1 syncope. Simulated ADL are: lying on a bed then standing; walking a few meters; sitting on a chair then standing; go up or down three steps; and standing after picking something. Data were acquired using a MARG sensor, a wearable multisensory device tied to the subject's waist, that recorded time-variations of the subject's acceleration and orientation (expressed through the yaw, pitch and roll angles). These data can be useful in the development and test of algorithms to automatically identify and classify fall events. Fall detection systems are particularly useful when a subject is alone and not able to stand up after a fall, since an automatic alarm can be sent remotely to receive proper help.

Project description:This paper defines two major data sets 1) from wearable inertial measurement sensors and 2) wearable ECG SHIMMER™ sensors. The first dataset is devised to benchmark techniques dealing with human behavior analysis based on multimodal inertial measurement wearable SHIMMER™ sensors unit during research studies "Fall Detection System for the Elderly Based on the Classification of Shimmer Sensor Prototype Data" [2] and "A novel fall detection algorithm for elderly using SHIMMER wearable sensors" [3]. The SHIMMER inertial sensor is a lightweight sensing device, incorporated with tri-axial accelerometer, a tri-axial gyroscope and tri-axial magnetometer, mounted on the waist of the subjects. The second dataset is developed to assess the feasibility of using SHIMMER™ wearable third generation ECG sensors for identification of basic heart anomalies by remote ECG analysis. The experimental protocol was carried out according to the Timed Up and Go (TUG) test [1], which is mainly used in fall detection and fall risk assessment systems specially designed for elderly. Three daily life activities such as standing still, walking and sitting on chair and getup were performed along with fall activity in controlled environment. Project description:This paper describes a dataset acquired from 41 volunteers performing 16 Activities of daily livings (ADLs) and 8 Falls repeated 5 times. This data was collected using a custom wrist-worn end device. The dataset has data collected from Inertial measurement unit (IMU) and heart-rate sensors. The end device is built using Qualcomm Snapdragon 820c System on Chip (SoC) interfaced to the sensors via Interconnect Integrated Circuit (I2C) protocol. The data was sampled for every activity at a rate of 20 Hz for the motion sensors and at a rate of 1 Hz for the heart-rate sensor. The motion sensor comprised of a triaxial accelerometer, triaxial gyroscope, triaxial magnetometer and a linear accelerometer. The heart-rate sensor was medical grade and all sensors were calibrated for the wrist -worn position. Project description:This article presents a five-part dataset for human gait analysis in a healthy older adult population (37 women and seven men; age 69.98 ± 8.57 years, body mass index 27.71 ± 4.57). Part 1 compromises demographic data for the 44 participants, along with the results of the Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB) motor function test and the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE). We used the MMSE to ensure the participants could understand the experimental protocol instructions. Part 2 presents the anthropometric measurements of the participants. Part 3 shows the results for each item of the Gait component of the Performance Oriented Mobility Assessment (POMA-G). Part 4 contains five files per participant, storing motion-capture data for the lower limb in the Coordinate 3D (C3D) format. These files were generated using a Vicon motion analysis system, consisting of 24 reflective markers and seven cameras (Vantage V5) sampled at 100?Hz. Part 5 contains 26 gait parameters for each C3D file obtained using Nexus 2.9.3. The dataset is available in a Mendeley repository (Reserved DOI: 10.17632/xgw6bg3g8h.1).

Project description:BackgroundDetection of significant differentially expressed genes (DEGs) from DNA microarray datasets is a common routine task conducted in biomedical research. For the detection of DEGs, numerous methods are proposed. By such conventional methods, generally, DEGs are detected from one dataset consisting of group of control and treatment. However, some DEGs are easily to be detected in any experimental condition. For the detection of much experiment condition specific DEGs, each measurement value of gene expression levels should be compared in two dimensional ways, or both with other genes and other datasets simultaneously. For this purpose, we retrieve the gene expression data from public database as possible and construct "meta-dataset" which summarize expression change of all genes in various experimental condition. Herein, we propose "two-way AIC" (Akaike Information Criteria), method for simultaneous detection of significance genes and experiments on meta-dataset.ResultsAs a case study of the Pseudomonas aeruginosa, we evaluate whether two-way AIC method can detect test data which is the experiment condition specific DEGs. Operon genes are used as test data. Compared with other commonly used statistical methods (t-rank/F-test, RankProducts and SAM), two-way AIC shows the highest specificity of detection of operon genes.ConclusionsThe two-way AIC performs high specificity for operon gene detection on the microarray meta-dataset. This method can also be applied to estimation of mutual gene interactions.

Project description:Metallothioneins are ubiquitous small, cysteine-rich, multifunctional proteins which can bind heavy metals.We report the results of phylogenetic and gene expression analyses that include two new Tetrahymena thermophila metallothionein genes (MTT3 and MTT5). Sequence alignments of all known Tetrahymena metallothioneins have allowed us to rationalize the structure of these proteins. We now formally subdivide the known metallothioneins from the ciliate genus Tetrahymena into two well defined subfamilies, 7a and 7b, based on phylogenetic analysis, on the pattern of clustering of Cys residues, and on the pattern of inducibility by the heavy metals Cd and Cu. Sequence alignment also reveals a remarkably regular, conserved and hierarchical modular structure of all five subfamily 7a MTs, which include MTT3 and MTT5. The former has three modules, while the latter has only two. Induction levels of the three T. thermophila genes were determined using quantitative real time RT-PCR. Various stressors (including heavy metals) brought about dramatically different fold-inductions for each gene; MTT5 showed the highest fold-induction. Conserved DNA motifs with potential regulatory significance were identified, in an unbiased way, upstream of the start codons of subfamily 7a MTs. EST evidence for alternative splicing in the 3' UTR of the MTT5 mRNA with potential regulatory activity is reported.The small number and remarkably regular structure of Tetrahymena MTs, coupled with the experimental tractability of this model organism for studies of in vivo function, make it an attractive system for the experimental dissection of the roles, structure/function relationships, regulation of gene expression, and adaptive evolution of these proteins, as well as for the development of biotechnological applications for the environmental monitoring of toxic substances.

Project description:Do complex event representations fragment over time, or are they instead forgotten in an all-or-none manner? For example, if we met a friend in a café and they gave us a present, do we forget the constituent elements of this event (location, person, and object) independently, or would the whole event be forgotten? Research suggests that item-based memories are forgotten in a fragmented manner. However, we do not know how more complex episodic, event-based memories are forgotten. We assessed both retrieval accuracy and dependency-the statistical association between the retrieval successes of different elements from the same event-for complex events. Across 4 experiments, we show that retrieval dependency is found both immediately after learning and following a 12-hr and 1-week delay. Further, the amount of retrieval dependency after a delay is greater than that predicted by a model of independent forgetting. This dependency was only seen for coherent "closed-loops," where all pairwise associations between locations, people, and objects were encoded. When "open-loops" were learned, where only 2 out of the 3 possible associations were encoded, no dependency was seen immediately after learning or after a delay. Finally, we also provide evidence for higher retention rates for closed-loops than for open-loops. Therefore, closed-loops do not fragment as a function of forgetting and are retained for longer than are open-loops. Project description:SignificanceBrief disruptions in capillary flow, commonly referred to as capillary "stalling," have gained interest recently for their potential role in disrupting cerebral blood flow and oxygen delivery. Approaches to studying this phenomenon have been hindered by limited volumetric imaging rates and cumbersome manual analysis. The ability to precisely and efficiently quantify the dynamics of these events will be key in understanding their potential role in stroke and neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease.AimOur study aimed to demonstrate that the fast volumetric imaging rates offered by Bessel beam two-photon microscopy combined with improved data analysis throughput allows for faster and more precise measurement of capillary stall dynamics.ResultsWe found that while our analysis approach was unable to achieve full automation, we were able to cut analysis time in half while also finding stalling events that were missed in traditional blind manual analysis. The resulting data showed that our Bessel beam system was captured more stalling events compared to optical coherence tomography, particularly shorter stalling events. We then compare differences in stall dynamics between a young and old group of mice as well as a demonstrate changes in stalling before and after photothrombotic model of stroke. Finally, we also demonstrate the ability to monitor arteriole dynamics alongside stall dynamics.ConclusionsBessel beam two-photon microscopy combined with high throughput analysis is a powerful tool for studying capillary stalling due to its ability to monitor hundreds of capillaries simultaneously at high frame rates.
