The aim was to evaluate sexual function of healthy women in Croatia and the possible impact of depression, anxiety, and sociodemographic factors. A total of 204 healthy women filled in a basic sociodemographic questionnaire, the Patient Health Questionnaire-9, Anxiety Disorder-7, and Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI). Project description:ObjectivesFemale sexual dysfunction is an underestimated problem that negatively affects women's quality of life. Although the overall prevalence of sexual dysfunction in women is high, only a few studies have focused on this problem. In Japan, an index of female sexual function has not been clearly defined. Hence, this study aimed to investigate the sexual function of normal Japanese women and the temporal changes they experienced using the Female Sexual Function Index administered online in 2012 and 2019.MethodsThe subjects were Japanese women aged 20-79 years registered in an Internet research company. We collected data of 1034 and 2031 women in 2012 and 2019, respectively, based on Japan's population distribution according to age. Subsequently, we analyzed the collected data using a Japanese version of the Female Sexual Function Index. We investigated the temporal changes in the Female Sexual Function Index total score, the ratio of women who did not engage in sexual activities and women having "no sexual activity" with their partners, and the total Female Sexual Function Index scores according to age.ResultsThe average Female Sexual Function Index total score decreased from 14.6 in 2012 to 12.5 in 2019 (p < 0.001). No significant difference was observed in the average Female Sexual Function Index score of the group with sexual activity between 2012 (22.2) and 2019 (22.4). The ratio of women not engaging in sexual activities increased from 42.2% in 2012 to 54.0% in 2019. The ratio of women having "no sexual activity" with their partners increased by 10%.ConclusionComparison of data between 2012 and 2019 indicated that Japanese women have become less sexually active. The average Female Sexual Function Index total score of 22 may be useful as a reference value for diagnosing female sexual dysfunction in Japan.

Project description:BACKGROUND:The evaluation of sexual function is an important outcome in women who suffer some pelvic floor disorders (PFD). The Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI) is the most widely used questionnaire to evaluate the sexual health in female population. This study presents the adaptation and psychometric validation of the FSFI for Spanish women with PFD. METHODS:The Spanish version of the FSFI was developed through the forward and backward translation process. The psychometric properties of reliability, validity, responsiveness, and feasibility were conducted in Spanish women with PFD who were assigned to the case or control group (with or without sexual dysfunction respectively). RESULTS:A total of 323 Spanish women with PFD were recruited. The cross-cultural adaptation of the Spanish FSFI achieved a good semantic, conceptual, idiomatic, and content equivalence. The test-retest reliability was shown to be high in all of the cases. The convergent validity showed high results in the domain intercorrelations between each domain and total FSFI. The discriminant validity showed statistically significant differences between sexual dysfunction and control groups. The responsiveness was shown to be moderate to good in the dimensions and excellent in the total FSFI. CONCLUSIONS:Spanish FSFI can be used as a reliable, valid, responsive, and feasible instrument for assessing sexual function in women.

Project description:IntroductionCannabis use has increased in the last decade, and the impact of cannabis on female sexual function remains unclear.AimTo assess the impact of frequency of use, chemovar (tetrahydrocannabinol, cannabinol, or both) type, and method of consumption on female sexual function among cannabis users.MethodsAdults who visited a single-partner cannabis dispensary's locations were invited to participate in an uncompensated, anonymous online survey October 20, 2019 and March 12, 2020. The survey assessed baseline demographics, health status, cannabis use habits as well as used the validated Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI) to assess sexual function.Main outcome measureThe main outcomes of this study are the total FSFI score (sexual dysfunction cutoff <26.55) and subdomain scores including desire, arousal, lubrication, orgasm, satisfaction, and pain.ResultsA total of 452 women responded with the majority between the ages of 30-49 years (54.7%) and in a relationship or married (81.6%). Of them,72.8% reported using cannabis more than 6 times per week, usually through smoking flower (46.7%). Women who reported more cannabis use, reported higher FSFI scores (29.0 vs 26.7 for lowest vs highest frequencies of reported use, P = .003). Moreover, an increase in cannabis use frequency by one additional use per week was associated with an increase in total FSFI (β = 0.61, P = .0004) and subdomains including desire domain (P = .02), arousal domain (P = .0002), orgasm domain (P = .002), and satisfaction domain (P = .003). For each additional step of cannabis use intensity (ie, times per week), the odds of reporting female sexual dysfunction declined by 21% (odds ratio: 0.79, 95% confidence interval: 0.68-0.92, P = .002). Method of consumption of cannabis and chemovar type did not consistently impact FSFI scores or odds of sexual dysfunction.ConclusionIncreased frequency of marijuana use is associated with improved sexual function among female users, whereas chemovar type, method of consumption, and reason for use does not impact outcomes. Project description:BackgroundMost studies on female sexual dysfunction are performed in population inventories and under specific clinical conditions. These approaches are performed using validated psychometric scales. Different scales to assess sexual function use different numbers of questions to characterize their domains. They also may or may not include domains of interaction between sexual partners. The objective of this study was to compare the precision between scales to be able to analyze their accuracy for better diagnosis of sexual dysfunction.MethodsFifty (50) healthy young women were enrolled in this study. Three questionnaires (FSFI, SQ-F, and GRISS) were applied to assess sexual function (n = 44). The accuracy measured by the area under the ROC curve (AUC) for individual domains and to cross-validated pairwise comparison of the three analyzed instruments was used. Kruskall-Wallis test to analyze individual domains of the scales was also used.The P-value was established as 0.05.ResultsThe results showed that all domains and total FSFI and GRISS scores were significantly different between normal and dysfunctional women, but not for SQ-F domains. Indeed, AUC accuracy varied from excellent-good domain discrimination for FSFI and GRISS, but fair-poor for SQ-F. For the paired comparison between the three questionnaires a fair accuracy was detected. The specificity percentage was around 84% whereas that for sensibility was low, around 30%.ConclusionsThe best agreement was between FSFI and SQ-F, probably being related to high similar shared questions when compared to GRISS. The agreement between SQ-F and GRISS was low possible due to low number of questions in SQ-F to characterize similar domains. This study evidenced high agreement between scales to sensitivity and low agreement for specificity, thereby conferring fair accuracy between them. Thus, the limited grade for discriminatory capacity (AUC) for sexual response should be considered when comparing results from these three different questionnaires and also when comparing with other different scales. In addition, despite the diversity of scales, the high reliability and fit for their desire domain suggest that the FSFI scale has good accuracy for the current clinical assessment of women's sexual health.Clinical trial registrationNCT03241524 . Project description:Obesity and gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) are increasing worldwide and may compromise female sexual function. We hypothesize that among GDM patients in the third trimester of pregnancy, those with excess body fat would have worse female sexual function scores than normal weight women. Our aim was to assess the sexual function of overweight compared to normal weight women with GDM. This was a cross-sectional survey involving 143 Brazilian women with GDM in the third trimester of pregnancy: 76 were overweight (pre-pregnancy body mass index-BMI?25.0 Kg/m2) and 67 were normal weight (BMI 18.5-24.9 Kg/m2). Participants were recruited from March 2010 to April 2013 at the antenatal clinic of a single public tertiary teaching institution. The Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI) questionnaire was used to assess sexual function. Overall, 51.7% of the 143 participants were at risk for sexual dysfunction symptoms (FSFI scores ?26); this rate was significantly higher among overweight compared to normal weight women (60.5% versus 41.8%, p?=?0.038). Mean total FSFI scores were significantly lower in overweight compared to normal weight women (21.7±9.2 versus 24.9±8.0, p?=?0.029). Compared to normal weight women, overweight participants had lower mean scores in desire (3.4±1.2 versus 4.0±1.4, p?=?0.007) and lubrication (3.8±2.0 versus 4.5±1.6, p?=?0.023). According to these results, overweight women with GDM in the third trimester of pregnancy have lower female sexual function scores than normal weight women with the same disorder.

Project description:Problems related to low sexual desire in women are common clinical complaints, and the aetiology is poorly understood. We investigated predictors of change in levels of sexual desire using a novel network approach, which assumes that mental disorders arise from direct interactions between symptoms. Using population-based data from 1,449 Finnish women, we compared between-subject networks of women whose sexual desire decreased, increased, or remained stable over time. Networks were estimated and analyzed at T1 (2006) and replicated at T2 (2013) using R. Domains included were, among others, sexual functions, sexual distress, anxiety, depression, body dissatisfaction, and relationship status. Overall, networks were fairly similar across groups. Sexual arousal, satisfaction, and relationship status were the most central variables, implying that they might play prominent roles in female sexual function; sexual distress mediated between general distress and sexual function; and sexual desire and arousal showed different patterns of relationships, suggesting that they represent unique sexual function aspects. Potential group-differences suggested that sex-related pain and body dissatisfaction might play roles in precipitating decreases of sexual desire. The general network structure and similarities between groups replicated well; however, the potential group-differences did not replicate. Our study sets the stage for future clinical and longitudinal network modelling of female sexual function.

Project description:To examine relationships among parity, mode of delivery, and other parturition-related factors with women's sexual function later in life.Self-administered questionnaires examined sexual desire, activity, satisfaction, and problems in a multiethnic cohort of women aged 40 years and older with at least one past childbirth event. Trained abstractors obtained information on parity, mode of delivery, and other parturition-related factors from archived records. Multivariable regression models examined associations with sexual function controlling for age, race or ethnicity, partner status, diabetes, and general health.Among 1,094 participants, mean (standard deviation) age was 56.3 (±8.7) years, 568 (43%) were racial or ethnic minorities (214 African American, 171 Asian, and 183 Latina), and 963 (88%) were multiparous. Fifty-six percent (n=601) reported low sexual desire; 53% (n=577) reported less than monthly sexual activity, and 43% (n=399) reported low overall sexual satisfaction. Greater parity was not associated with increased risk of reporting low sexual desire (adjusted odds ratio [OR] 1.08, confidence interval [CI] 0.96-1.21 per each birth), less than monthly sexual activity (adjusted OR 1.05, CI 0.93-1.20 per each birth), or low sexual satisfaction (adjusted OR 0.96, CI 0.85-1.09 per each birth). Compared with vaginal delivery alone, women with a history of cesarean delivery were not significantly more likely to report low desire (adjusted OR 0.71, CI 0.34-1.47), less than monthly sexual activity (adjusted OR 1.03, CI 0.46-2.32), or low sexual satisfaction (adjusted OR 0.57, CI 0.26-1.22). Women with a history of operative-assisted delivery were more likely to report low desire (adjusted OR 1.38, CI 1.04-1.83).Among women with at least one childbirth event, parity and mode of delivery are not major determinants of sexual desire, activity, or satisfaction later in life.II.

Project description:BACKGROUND:One of the typical complaints in females with multiple sclerosis (MS) is Sexual dysfunction (SD). AIM:This study aimed to compare the sexual function of women with and without MS and to recognise factors that possibly related to sexual dysfunction of women with MS. MATERIAL AND METHODS:Sexual function of 64 women with MS as a case study group were compared to a group of control comprised of 64 women. Female Sexual Function Inventory (FSFI) and Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) were used accordingly to assess sexual function and severity of depression of case and control groups. Functional status of MS Patients was assessed by the Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS). The data were analysed using chi-square, independent Samples t, Pearson's correlation coefficients, and multiple linear regression tests. RESULTS:There were no differences in the Total FSFI and 4 FSFI subscale scores (i.e. sexual desire, arousal, lubrication and satisfaction) between women with MS and controls. The only significant difference between the two groups was the dimension of orgasm (p = 0.016). Multivariate analysis demonstrated that only BDI and FSFI total scores have significantly related (B = -0.436, P < 0.001). In women with MS, a significant negative correlation was found between FSFI and EDSS scores (rho = -0.35, P = 0.032), as well as between FSFI scores and disease duration (rho = -0.25, P = 0.01). CONCLUSION:Depression was associated to sexual dysfunction in women. It could be advantageous to evaluate and treat depression in women with MS who suffer from sexual dysfunction.

Project description:This study was done to develop a Korean version of the Quality of Sexual Function (QSF-K) and evaluate the validity and reliability of the QSF-K. The participants were 220 women who visited the Center for Uterine Cancer at the National Cancer Center in Korea. Participants completed the scale once and then again at a two to four week interval. The QSF-K, Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI) and European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire Core 30 (EORTC-QLQ-C30) were used in this study. Receiver operating characteristics (ROC) curve, area under the ROC curve (AUC), intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC), and Cronbach's alpha were analyzed. In the analysis of the reliability, Cronbach's alpha was 0.83 and the ICC was 0.70. The validity measured with the AUC of the QSF-K comparing the FSFI and Global Health/QOL of the EORTC-QLQ-C30 was 0.717 and 0.728, respectively. Specifically, the AUC of the sexual activity level of the QSF-K was 0.838 in the FSFI comparison. The AUC of the psycho-somatic QOL of the QSF-K was 0.758 in the Global Health/QOL of the EORTC-QLQ-C30 comparison. Approximately half of the women (51.8%) had mild complaints/problems. The Korean version of the QSF was developed and validated.

Project description:Ospemifene is a non-estrogen, tissue selective estrogen receptor agonist/antagonist, or selective estrogen receptor modulator, recently approved for the treatment of dyspareunia, a symptom of vulvar and vaginal atrophy (VVA), due to menopause. Postmenopausal dyspareunia is often associated with female sexual dysfunction (FSD). In this report, we present data that demonstrate the effect of ospemifene 60 mg/day on FSD assessed by the Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI), a widely used tool with six domains (Arousal, Desire, Orgasm, Lubrication, Satisfaction, and Pain).A phase-3, randomized, double-blind, 12-week trial (n = 919) compared the efficacy and safety of oral ospemifene 60 mg/day vs. placebo in postmenopausal women with VVA in two strata based on self-reported, most bothersome symptom of either dyspareunia or dryness. Primary data were published previously. We report herein pre-specified secondary efficacy endpoints analyses, including changes from baseline to Weeks 4 and 12 for FSFI total and domain scores as well as serum hormone levels.Ospemifene 60 mg/day demonstrated a significantly greater FSFI total score improvement vs. placebo at Week 4 (p < 0.001). Improvement in FSFI scores continued to Week 12 (p < 0.001). At Week 4, the FSFI domains of Sexual Pain, Arousal, and Desire were significantly improved with ospemifene vs. placebo; at Week 12, improvements in all domains were significant (p < 0.05). Changes in serum hormones were minor and uncorrelated with changes in sexual functioning.In a large, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, ospemifene 60 mg/day significantly improved FSD in women with VVA. Consistent effects across FSFI domains were observed.
