Anisotropic Thermal Expansion in an Anionic Framework Showing Guest-Dependent Phases.

ABSTRACT: Crystalline materials generally show small positive thermal expansion along all three crystallographic axes because of increasing anharmonic vibrational amplitudes between bonded atoms or ions pairs on heating. In very rare cases, structural peculiarities may give rise to negative, anomalously large or zero thermal expansion behaviors, which remain poorly understood. Host-guest composites may exhibit such anomalous behavior if guest motions controllable. Here we report an anionic framework of helical nanotubes comprising three parallel helical chains. The anisotropic interaction between the guest and the framework, results in anisotropic thermal expansion in this framework. A series of detailed structural determination at 50 K intervals enable process visualization at the molecular level and the observed guest-dependent phases of the framework strongly support our proposed mechanism.

Extraordinary anisotropic thermal expansion in photosalient crystals.

Project description:Although a plethora of metal complexes have been characterized, those having multifunctional properties are very rare. This article reports three isotypical complexes, namely [Cu(benzoate)L 2], where L = 4-styryl-pyridine (4spy) (1), 2'-fluoro-4-styryl-pyridine (2F-4spy) (2) and 3'-fluoro-4-styryl-pyridine (3F-4spy) (3), which show photosalient behavior (photoinduced crystal mobility) while they undergo [2+2] cyclo-addition. These crystals also exhibit anisotropic thermal expansion when heated from room temperature to 200°C. The overall thermal expansion of the crystals is impressive, with the largest volumetric thermal expansion coefficients for 1, 2 and 3 of 241.8, 233.1 and 285.7 × 10-6 K-1, respectively, values that are comparable to only a handful of other reported materials known to undergo colossal thermal expansion. As a result of the expansion, their single crystals occasionally move by rolling. Altogether, these materials exhibit unusual and hitherto untapped solid-state properties.

Anisotropic Thermal Expansion of Transparent Cellulose Nanopapers.

Project description:We report the anisotropic thermal expansion of a transparent nanopaper structure comprising cellulose nanofibers (CNFs). The coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) of the nanopaper in the out-of-plane direction was 44.6 ppm/°C in the temperature range of 25-100°C, which is approximately five times larger than its CTE in the in-plane direction in the same temperature range (8.3 ppm/°C). Such a strong anisotropy in thermal expansion is mainly attributable to the anisotropic CTE values of single CNFs in the fiber axis and cross-sectional directions. We observed anisotropic thermal expansion even in a bioplastic composite containing only 2.5% w/w CNFs.

Continuous strain tuning of oxygen evolution catalysts with anisotropic thermal expansion.

Project description:Compressive strain, downshifting the d-band center of transition metal oxides, is an effective way to accelerate the sluggish kinetics of oxygen evolution reaction (OER) for water electrolysis. Here, we find that anisotropic thermal expansion can produce compressive strains of the IrO6 octahedron in Sr2IrO4 catalyst, thus downshifting its d-band center. Different from the previous strategies to create constant strains in the crystals, the thermal-triggered compressive strains can be real-timely tuned by varying temperature. As a result of the thermal strain accelerating OER kinetics, the Sr2IrO4 exhibits the nonlinear lnjo - T-1 (jo, exchange current density; T, absolute temperature) Arrhenius relationship, resulting from the thermally induced low-barrier electron transfer in the presence of thermal compressive strains. Our results verify that the thermal field can be utilized to manipulate the electronic states of Sr2IrO4 via thermal compressive strains downshifting the d-band center, significantly accelerating the OER kinetics, beyond the traditional thermal diffusion effects.

Anisotropic Thermal Expansion and Electronic Structure of LiInSe<sub>2</sub>.

Project description:Optical quality cm-sized LiInSe2 crystals were grown using the Bridgman-Stockbarger method, starting from pure element reagents, under the conditions of a low temperature gradient of 5-6 degrees/cm and a slight melt overheating. The phase purity of the grown crystal was verified by the powder XRD analysis. The thermophysical characteristics of LiInSe2 were determined by the XRD measurements in the temperature range of 303-703 K and strong anisotropy of the thermal expansion coefficients was established. The following values of thermal expansion coefficients were determined in LiInSe2: αa = 8.1 (1), αb = 16.1 (2) and αc = 5.64 (6) MK-1. The electronic structure of LiInSe2 was measured by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The band structure of LiInSe2 was calculated by ab initio methods.

Supramolecular-jack-like guest in ultramicroporous crystal for exceptional thermal expansion behaviour.

Project description:The dynamic behaviours of host frameworks and guest molecules have received much attention for their great relevance with smart materials, but little has been developed to control or understand the host-guest interplay. Here we show that the confined guest can utilize not only molecular static effects but also bulk dynamic properties to control the host dynamics. By virtue of the three-dimensional hinge-like framework and quasi-discrete ultramicropores, a flexible porous coordination polymer exhibits not only drastic guest-modulation effect of the thermal expansion magnitude (up to 422 × 10(-6) K(-1)) and even the anisotropy but also records positive/negative thermal expansion coefficients of +482/-218 × 10(-6) K(-1). Moreover, single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses demonstrate that the jack-like motion of the guest supramolecular dimers, being analogous to the anisotropic thermal expansion of bulk van der Waals solids, is crucial for changing the flexibility mode and thermal expansion behaviour of the crystal.

Tunable thermal expansion in framework materials through redox intercalation.

Project description:Thermal expansion properties of solids are of fundamental interest and control of thermal expansion is important for practical applications but can be difficult to achieve. Many framework-type materials show negative thermal expansion when internal cages are empty but positive thermal expansion when additional atoms or molecules fill internal voids present. Here we show that redox intercalation offers an effective method to control thermal expansion from positive to zero to negative by insertion of Li ions into the simple negative thermal expansion framework material ScF3, doped with 10% Fe to enable reduction. The small concentration of intercalated Li ions has a strong influence through steric hindrance of transverse fluoride ion vibrations, which directly controls the thermal expansion. Redox intercalation of guest ions is thus likely to be a general and effective method for controlling thermal expansion in the many known framework materials with phonon-driven negative thermal expansion.

Efficient separation of xylene isomers by a guest-responsive metal-organic framework with rotational anionic sites.

Project description:The separation of xylene isomers (para-, meta-, orth-) remains a great challenge in the petrochemical industry due to their similar molecular structure and physical properties. Porous materials with sensitive nanospace and selective binding sites for discriminating the subtle structural difference of isomers are urgently needed. Here, we demonstrate the adaptively molecular discrimination of xylene isomers by employing a NbOF52--pillared metal-organic framework (NbOFFIVE-bpy-Ni, also referred to as ZU-61) with rotational anionic sites. Single crystal X-ray diffraction studies indicate that ZU-61 with guest-responsive nanospace/sites can adapt the shape of specific isomers through geometric deformation and/or the rotation of fluorine atoms in anionic sites, thereby enabling ZU-61 to effectively differentiate xylene isomers through multiple C-H···F interactions. ZU-61 exhibited both high meta-xylene uptake capacity (3.4 mmol g-1) and meta-xylene/para-xylene separation selectivity (2.9, obtained from breakthrough curves), as well as a favorable separation sequence as confirmed by breakthrough experiments: para-xylene elute first with high-purity (≥99.9%), then meta-xylene, and orth-xylene. Such a remarkable performance of ZU-61 can be attributed to the type anionic binding sites together with its guest-response properties.

Thermal Expansion of Metal-Organic Framework Crystal-Glass Composites.

Project description:Metal-organic framework crystal-glass composites (MOF CGCs) are a class of materials comprising a crystalline framework embedded within a MOF glass matrix. Herein, we investigate the thermal expansion behavior of three MOF CGCs, incorporating two flexible (MIL-53(Al) and MIL-118) and one rigid (UL-MOF-1) MOF within a ZIF-62 glass matrix. Specifically, variable-temperature powder X-ray diffraction data and thermomechanical analysis show the suppression of thermal expansivity in each of these three crystalline MOFs when suspended within a ZIF-62 glass matrix. In particular, for the two flexible frameworks, the average volumetric thermal expansion (β) was found to be near-zero in the crystal-glass composite. These results provide a route to engineering thermal expansivity in stimuli-responsive MOF glass composites.

Complexation-driven assembly of imine-linked helical receptors showing adaptive folding and temperature-dependent guest selection.

Project description:The development of synthetic receptors capable of selectively binding guests with diverse structures and multiple functional groups poses a significant challenge. Here, we present the efficient assembly of foldamer-based receptors for monosaccharides, utilising the principles of complexation-induced equilibrium shifting and adaptive folding. Diimine 4 can be quantitatively assembled from smaller components when D-galactose is added as a guest among monosaccharides we examined. During this assembly, dual complexation-induced equilibrium shifts toward both the formation of diimine 4 and the conversion of D-galactose into α-D-galactofuranose are observed. Diimine 6 is quantitatively assembled in the presence of two different guests, methyl β-D-glucopyranoside and methyl β-D-galactopyranoside, resulting in the formation of two dimeric complexes: (6-MP)2⊃(methyl β-D-glucopyranoside)2 and (6-MM)2⊃(methyl β-D-galactopyranoside∙2H2O)2, respectively. These two complexes exhibit distinct folding structures with domain-swapping cavities depending on the bound guest and temperature. Interestingly, (6-MM)2⊃(methyl β-D-galactopyranoside∙2H2O)2 is exclusively formed at lower temperatures, while (6-MP)2⊃(methyl β-D-glucopyranoside)2 is only formed at higher temperatures.

A flexible resistive strain gauge with reduced temperature effect via thermal expansion anisotropic composite substrate.

Project description:Strain gauge plays vital roles in various fields as structural health monitoring, aerospace engineering, and civil infrastructure. However, traditional flexible strain gauge inevitably brings the pseudo-signal caused by the substrate temperature effect and determines its accuracy. Here, we present an anisotropic composite substrate designed to modify the thermal expansion performance via Micro-electro-mechanical System (MEMS) technology, which facilitates the development of strain gauges that are minimally affected by substrate temperature-induced effect. Compared to the isotropic flexible substrate, the simulated expansion displacement in the thermal insensitive direction is reduced by 53.6% via introducing an anisotropic thermal expansion structure. The developed strain gauge exhibits significantly reduced sensitivity to temperature-induced effect, with a temperature coefficient of resistance decreasing from 87.3% to 10%, along with a notable 47.1% improvement in TCR stability. In addition, the strain gauge displays a sensitivity of 1.99 and boasts a wide strain operational range of 0-6000 µε, while maintaining excellent linearity. Furthermore, stress response conducted on a model of an aircraft wing illustrates the rapid monitoring of the strain gauge, which can detect strain as low as 100 µε. This study strongly highlights the potential applicability of the developed strain gauge in the aircraft, ships, and bridges for monitoring stress.
