Laser-Induced Graphene Derived from Kraft Lignin for Flexible Supercapacitors.

ABSTRACT: Porous graphene was photothermally induced from kraft lignin via direct laser writing. This laser-induced graphene (LIG) possessed a hierarchical structure with a three-dimensional (3D) interconnected network ideal for its transfer from the kraft lignin/poly(ethylene oxide) (KL/PEO) film onto polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). The resultant LIG/PDMS composite was shown to keep the intrinsic porous structure and electrically active sites of LIG. The supercapacitors (SCs) fabricated using the LIG/PDMS composite exhibited good electrochemical performance and excellent cyclic stability. More than 90% capacitance was retained after 10?000 cycles. Moreover, due to their high flexibility, the SCs were able to endure bending deformation without significantly sacrificing their capacitance. The proposed technology for the fabrication of flexible SCs based on lignin-derived LIG demonstrated great potential to use a low-cost, renewable material for the manufacture of portable and wearable electronics.

Lignin-derived 3D porous graphene on carbon cloth for flexible supercapacitors.

Project description:In this work, we reported a new method to fabricate flexible carbon-based supercapacitor electrodes derived from a commercialized and low-cost lignin. The fabrication process skips traditional stabilization/carbonization/activation for lignin-based carbon production. Also, the process reported here was green and facile, with minimum solvent use and no pretreatment required. Characterization of the lignin showed that it has common properties among all types of lignin. The lignin was impregnated on carbon cloth and then subjected to direct laser writing to form the desired electrodes (LLC). The results showed that lignin was successfully bonded to carbon cloth. The LLC has a good porous carbon structure with a high I G/I D ratio of 1.39, and a small interlayer spacing d 002 of 0.3436 nm, which are superior to most of the reported lignin-based carbons. Although not optimized, the fabricated LLC showed good supercapacitance behavior with an areal capacitance of 157.3 mF cm-2 at 0.1 mA cm-2. In addition, the superior flexibility of LLC makes it a promising electrode that can be used more widely in portable devices. Conceptually, this method can be generalized to all types of lignin and can define intriguing new research interests towards lignin applications.

Free-standing supercapacitors from Kraft lignin nanofibers with remarkable volumetric energy density.

Project description:We have discovered a very simple method to address the challenge associated with the low volumetric energy density of free-standing carbon nanofiber electrodes for supercapacitors by electrospinning Kraft lignin in the presence of an oxidizing salt (NaNO3) and subsequent carbonization in a reducing atmosphere. The presence of the oxidative salt decreases the diameter of the resulting carbon nanofibers doubling their packing density from 0.51 to 1.03 mg cm-2 and hence doubling the volumetric energy density. At the same time, the oxidative NaNO3 salt eletrospun and carbonized together with lignin dissolved in NaOH acts as a template to increase the microporosity, thus contributing to a good gravimetric energy density. By simply adjusting the process parameters (amount of oxidizing/reducing agent), the gravimetric and volumetric energy density of the resulting lignin free-standing carbon nanofiber electrodes can be carefully tailored to fit specific power to energy demands. The areal capacitance increased from 147 mF cm-2 in the absence of NaNO3 to 350 mF cm-2 with NaNO3 translating into a volumetric energy density increase from 949 μW h cm-3 without NaNO3 to 2245 μW h cm-3 with NaNO3. Meanwhile, the gravimetric capacitance also increased from 151 F g-1 without to 192 F g-1 with NaNO3.

Paper-based laser-induced graphene for sustainable and flexible microsupercapacitor applications.

Project description:Laser-induced graphene (LIG) is as a promising material for flexible microsupercapacitors (MSCs) due to its simple and cost-effective processing. However, LIG-MSC research and production has been centered on non-sustainable polymeric substrates, such as polyimide. In this work, it is presented a cost-effective, reproducible, and robust approach for the preparation of LIG structures via a one-step laser direct writing on chromatography paper. The developed strategy relies on soaking the paper in a 0.1 M sodium tetraborate solution (borax) prior to the laser processing. Borax acts as a fire-retardant agent, thus allowing the laser processing of sensitive substrates that other way would be easily destroyed under the high-energy beam. LIG on paper exhibiting low sheet resistance (30 Ω sq-1) and improved electrode/electrolyte interface was obtained by the proposed method. When used as microsupercapacitor electrodes, this laser-induced graphene resulted in specific capacitances of 4.6 mF cm-2 (0.015 mA cm-2). Furthermore, the devices exhibit excellent cycling stability (> 10,000 cycles at 0.5 mA cm-2) and good mechanical properties. By connecting the devices in series and parallel, it was also possible to control the voltage and energy delivered by the system. Thus, paper-based LIG-MSC can be used as energy storage devices for flexible, low-cost, and portable electronics. Additionally, due to their flexible design and architecture, they can be easily adapted to other circuits and applications with different power requirements.

Laser-Printed, Flexible Graphene Pressure Sensors.

Project description:While the outstanding properties of graphene have attracted a lot of attention, one of the major bottlenecks of its widespread usage is its availability in large volumes. Laser printing graphene on polyimide films is an efficient single-step fabrication process that can remedy this issue. A laser-printed, flexible pressure sensor is developed utilizing the piezoresistive effect of 3D porous graphene. The pressure sensors performance can be easily adjusted via the geometrical parameters. They have a sensitivity in the range of 1.23 × 10-3 kPa and feature a high resolution with a detection limit of 10 Pa in combination with an extremely wide dynamic range of at least 20 MPa. They also provide excellent long-term stability of at least 15 000 cycles. The biocompatibility of laser-induced graphene is also evaluated by cytotoxicity assays and fluorescent staining, which show an insignificant drop in viability. Polymethyl methacrylate coating is particularly useful for underwater applications, protecting the sensors from biofouling and shunt currents, and enable operation at a depth of 2 km in highly saline Red Sea water. Due to its features, the sensors are a prime choice for multiple healthcare applications; for example, they are used for heart rate monitoring, plantar pressure measurements, and tactile sensing.

Graphene-Graphite Polyurethane Composite Based High-Energy Density Flexible Supercapacitors.

Project description:Energy autonomy is critical for wearable and portable systems and to this end storage devices with high-energy density are needed. This work presents high-energy density flexible supercapacitors (SCs), showing three times the energy density than similar type of SCs reported in the literature. The graphene-graphite polyurethane (GPU) composite based SCs have maximum energy and power densities of 10.22 µWh cm-2 and 11.15 mW cm-2, respectively, at a current density of 10 mA cm-2 and operating voltage of 2.25 V (considering the IR drop). The significant gain in the performance of SCs is due to excellent electroactive surface per unit area (surface roughness 97.6 nm) of GPU composite and high electrical conductivity (0.318 S cm-1). The fabricated SCs show stable response for more than 15 000 charging/discharging cycles at current densities of 10 mA cm-2 and operating voltage of 2.5 V (without considering the IR drop). The developed SCs are tested as energy storage devices for wide applications, namely: a) solar-powered energy-packs to operate 84 light-emitting diodes (LEDs) for more than a minute and to drive the actuators of a prosthetic limb; b) powering high-torque motors; and c) wristband for wearable sensors.

Bacterial conversion of depolymerized Kraft lignin.

Project description:BackgroundLignin is a potential feedstock for microbial conversion into various chemicals. However, the microbial degradation rate of native or technical lignin is low, and chemical depolymerization is needed to obtain reasonable conversion rates. In the current study, nine bacterial strains belonging to the Pseudomonas and Rhodococcus genera were evaluated for their ability to grow on alkaline-treated softwood lignin as a sole carbon source.ResultsPseudomonas fluorescens DSM 50090 and Rhodococcus opacus DSM1069 showed the best growth of the tested species on plates with lignin. Further evaluation of P. fluorescens and R. opacus was made in liquid cultivations with depolymerized softwood Kraft lignin (DL) at a concentration of 1 g/L. Size-exclusion chromatography (SEC) showed that R. opacus consumed most of the available lower-molecular weight compounds (approximately 0.1-0.4 kDa) in the DL, but the weight distribution of larger fractions was almost unaffected. Importantly, the consumed compounds included guaiacol-one of the main monomers in the DL. SEC analysis of P. fluorescens culture broth, in contrast, did not show a large conversion of low-molecular weight compounds, and guaiacol remained unconsumed. However, a significant shift in molecular weight distribution towards lower average weights was seen after cultivation with P. fluorescens.ConclusionsRhodococcus opacus and P. fluorescens were identified as two potential microbial candidates for the conversion/consumption of base-catalyzed depolymerized lignin, acting on low- and high-molecular weight lignin fragments, respectively. These findings will be of relevance for designing bioconversion of softwood Kraft lignin.

Two-photon-induced stretchable graphene supercapacitors.

Project description:Direct laser writing with an ultrashort laser beam pulses has emerged as a cost-effective single step technology for realizing high spatial resolution features of three-dimensional structures in confined footprints with potential for large area fabrication. Here we present the two-photon direct laser writing technology to develop high-performance stretchable biomimetic three-dimensional micro-supercapacitors with the fractal electrode distance down to 1 µm. With multilayered graphene oxide films, we show the charge transfer capability enhanced by order of 102 while the energy storage density exceeds the results in current lithium-ion batteries. The stretchability and the volumetric capacitance are increased to 150% and 86 mF/cm3 (0.181 mF/cm2), respectively. This additive nanofabrication method is highly desirable for the development of self-sustainable stretchable energy storage integrated with wearable technologies. The flexible and stretchable energy storage with a high energy density opens the new opportunity for on-chip sensing, imaging, and monitoring.

Stamping Fabrication of Flexible Planar Micro-Supercapacitors Using Porous Graphene Inks.

Project description:High performance, flexibility, safety, and robust integration for micro-supercapacitors (MSCs) are of immense interest for the urgent demand for miniaturized, smart energy-storage devices. However, repetitive photolithography processes in the fabrication of on-chip electronic components including various photoresists, masks, and toxic etchants are often not well-suited for industrial production. Here, a cost-effective stamping strategy is developed for scalable and rapid preparation of graphene-based planar MSCs. Combining stamps with desired shapes and highly conductive graphene inks, flexible MSCs with controlled structures are prepared on arbitrary substrates without any metal current collectors, additives, and polymer binders. The interdigitated MSC exhibits high areal capacitance up to 21.7 mF cm-2 at a current of 0.5 mA and a high power density of 6 mW cm-2 at an energy density of 5 µWh cm-2. Moreover, the MSCs show outstanding cycling performance and remarkable flexibility over 10 000 charge-discharge cycles and 300 bending cycles. In addition, the capacitance and output voltage of the MSCs are easily adjustable through interconnection with well-defined arrangements. The efficient, rapid manufacturing of the graphene-based interdigital MSCs with outstanding flexibility, shape diversity, and high areal capacitance shows great potential in wearable and portable electronics.

Highly flexible reduced graphene oxide@polypyrrole-polyethylene glycol foam for supercapacitors.

Project description:A flexible and free-standing 3D reduced graphene oxide@polypyrrole-polyethylene glycol (RGO@PPy-PEG) foam was developed for wearable supercapacitors. The device was fabricated sequentially, beginning with the electrodeposition of PPy in the presence of a PEG-borate on a sacrificial Ni foam template, followed by a subsequent GO wrapping and chemical reduction process. The 3D RGO@PPy-PEG foam electrode showed excellent electrochemical properties with a large specific capacitance of 415 F g-1 and excellent long-term stability (96% capacitance retention after 8000 charge-discharge cycles) in a three electrode configuration. An assembled (two-electrode configuration) symmetric supercapacitor using RGO@PPy-PEG electrodes exhibited a remarkable specific capacitance of 1019 mF cm-2 at 2 mV s-1 and 95% capacitance retention over 4000 cycles. The device exhibits extraordinary mechanical flexibility and showed negligable capacitance loss during or after 1000 bending cycles, highlighting its great potential in wearable energy devices.
