Chemical-induced spores of the Gram-negative bacterium <i>Myxococcus xanthus</i> are peptidoglycan (PG)-deficient. It is unclear how these spherical spores germinate into rod-shaped, walled cells without preexisting PG templates. We found that germinating spores first synthesize PG randomly on spherical surfaces.
