Project description:Herein, we report an in situ synthesis of graphene quantum dots (GQDs), which have been synthesized from only starch and water and stabilize AuNPs in water. The construction of six gold nanocomposites, i.e. AuNPs 1-6, with sizes ranging from 13.4 nm to 32.6 nm, was accomplished by only mixing the GQDs and chloroauric acid in different amounts without any additional reductants and surfactants. HRTEM has confirmed that the AuNPs have been stabilized by the GQDs, and a core/shell AuNPs@GQD structure has formed. In addition, the as-synthesized AuNPs show excellent catalytic performance in the reduction of 4-nitrophenol, a pertinacious pollutant occurring in industrial wastewater.

Project description:Hybrid nanostructures comprised of metal nanoparticles (MNPs) and quantum dots (QDs) have been found to exhibit unique, new optical properties due to the interaction that occurs between the MNPs and QDs. The aim of this work is to understand how the exciton-plasmon interaction in these systems is dependent on the excitation wavelength. The nanoassemblies consisted of gold (Au) NPs coated in a silica (SiO2) shell of a controlled thickness and core/shell CdSe/CdS QDs adsorbed onto the SiO2 shells. Our findings show that the photoluminescence lifetimes of the hybrid constructs are dependent on the excitation wavelength relative to the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) of the Au NPs. When the excitation wavelength is closer to the LSPR, the photoluminescence decay of the hybrid structures is faster. We demonstrate that by tuning the excitation wavelength close to the resonance, there is an enhancement in the exciton-plasmon coupling between the Au NPs and QDs resulting in a shortening in the QD photoluminescence lifetime. We then propose a possible mechanism to explain this excitation wavelength-dependent phenomenon.

Project description:A graphene-PbS quantum dot (QD) composite for application in high-performance near-infrared (NIR) photodetectors (PDs) is proposed in this study. A single-layer graphene flake and oleic acid-capped PbS QD composite is fabricated through the conventional sonication process, in hexane solution. Field emission scanning electron microscopy images of the graphene-PbS QD composite dispersed on a glass substrate confirm that the composite contains both aggregated graphene flakes and single-layer graphene with wrinkles; Transmission electron microscopy images reveal close packing with uniform size. The increased absorbance and quenched photoluminescence intensity of the graphene-PbS QD composite supports enhanced photoinduced charge transfer between graphene and the PbS QDs. Moreover, the specific Raman mode of the PbS QDs, embedded in the spectrum, is enhanced by combination with graphene, which can be interpreted by SERS as relevant to the photoinduced charge transfer between the Pbs QDs and graphene. For device application, a PD structure comprised by graphene-PbS QDs is fabricated. The photocurrent of the PD is measured using a conventional probe station with a 980-nm NIR laser diode. In the fabricated PD comprising graphene-PbS QDs, five-times higher photocurrent, 22% faster rise time, and 47% faster decay time are observed, compared to that comprising PbS QDs alone. This establishes the potential of the graphene-PbS QD composite for application in ultrathin, flexible, high-performance NIR PDs.

Project description:The current research presents a very simple method for the colorimetric detection of imidacloprid using a graphene quantum dot/Au (III) chemosensor. The results demonstrated that there is an interaction between Au3+ ions and the imidazole group of the pesticide toward reduction of Au3+ to Au0 in the presence of graphene quantum dots. This phenomenon changes the color of gold nanoparticles from yellow to grey or red, and causes a shift in the peak of localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) as gold nanoparticles are formed or aggregated based on the concentration of imidacloprid. Imidacloprid was determined by the developed sensor in a linear area of 0.01-1 ppm with a detection limit of 0.007 ppm. Therefore, a simple, quick, and sustainable sensor has been developed for the determination of the investigated analyte. Moreover, the sensor was applied to determine imidacloprid in the real cucumber samples fairly successful.

Project description:Hybrid colloidal quantum dot (CQD) solar cells are fabricated from multilayer stacks of lead sulfide (PbS) CQD and single layer graphene (SG). The inclusion of graphene interlayers is shown to increase power conversion efficiency by 9.18%. It is shown that the inclusion of conductive graphene enhances charge extraction in devices. Photoluminescence shows that graphene quenches emission from the quantum dot suggesting spontaneous charge transfer to graphene. CQD photodetectors exhibit increased photoresponse and improved transport properties. We propose that the CQD/SG hybrid structure is a route to make CQD thin films with improved charge extraction, therefore resulting in improved solar cell efficiency.

Project description:Luminescent nanomaterials have emerged as attractive candidates for sensing, catalysis and bioimaging applications in recent years. For practical use in bioimaging, nanomaterials with high photoluminescence, quantum yield, photostability and large Stokes shifts are needed. While offering high photoluminescence and quantum yield, semiconductor quantum dots suffer from toxicity and are susceptible to oxidation. In this context, atomically precise gold nanoclusters protected by thiol monolayers have emerged as a new class of luminescent nanomaterials. Low toxicity, bioavailability, photostability as well as tunable size, composition, and optoelectronic properties make them suitable for bioimaging and biosensing applications. In this review, an overview of the sensing of pathogens, and of in vitro and in vivo bioimaging using luminescent gold nanoclusters along with the limitations with selected examples are discussed.

Project description:Graphene quantum dots (GQDs) have received much attention due to their novel phenomena of charge transport and light absorption/emission. The optical transitions are known to be available up to ~6?eV in GQDs, especially useful for ultraviolet (UV) photodetectors (PDs). Thus, the demonstration of photodetection gain with GQDs would be the basis for a plenty of applications not only as a single-function device in detecting optical signals but also a key component in the optoelectronic integrated circuits. Here, we firstly report high-efficient photocurrent (PC) behaviors of PDs consisting of multiple-layer GQDs sandwiched between graphene sheets. High detectivity (>10(11)?cm Hz(1/2)/W) and responsivity (0.2 ~ 0.5 A/W) are achieved in the broad spectral range from UV to near infrared. The observed unique PD characteristics prove to be dominated by the tunneling of charge carriers through the energy states in GQDs, based on bias-dependent variations of the band profiles, resulting in novel dark current and PC behaviors.

Project description:A luminescent solar concentrator (LSC) is a solar-light harvesting device that concentrates light on a photovoltaic cell placed at the edge of an LSC panel to convert it into electricity. The nano-sized inorganic-organic cluster complex (dMDAEMA)4[Re6S8(NCS)6] (this refers to RMC where dMDAEMA is 2-dimethyl amino ethyl methacrylate) is a promising candidate for LSC luminophores due to its downshifted broad photoluminescence suitable for photovoltaic cells. However, the low quantum yield (QY) of RMC limits the performance. Here, zinc-doped CuGaS/ZnS core/shell quantum dots (ZQD) were used as energy transferring donor with high QY to improve the performance of the LSC. The two metal chalcogenide luminophores, RMC and ZQD, are chemically suitable for dispersion in an amphiphilic polymer matrix, producing a transparent waveguide with suppressed reabsorption and extended harvesting coverage of the solar spectrum. We achieved an ηopt of 3.47% and a PCE of 1.23% while maintaining greater than 80% transparency in the visible range. The high performance of this dual-dye LSC with suppressed reabsorption, and scattering losses is not only due to uniform dispersion of dyes in a polymer matrix, but also energy transfer from ZQD to RMC. This report suggests a new possibility for promising various multi-dye LSCs for use in building-integrated photovoltaic windows.
