First report of isolation of Aeromonas taiwanensis from India.

ABSTRACT: Genus Aeromonas consists of facultative anaerobic, Gram negative Bacilli which are primary environmental inhabitants worldwide. A recently reported strain of the genus, Aeromonas taiwanensis, was found while studying the presence of infectious marine microbes in a lacustrine wetland in India, making this the first isolation report from the country.

Project description:We report a case of Mycobacterium monacense (M. monacense) isolated from sputum of a female patient for the first time in India. The chest radiograph and symptoms were suggestive of pulmonary tuberculosis. M. monacense was isolated from the sputum specimen at the end of 11 days of incubation. The identification was confirmed by conventional biochemical tests and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) -based Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism (RFLP) and DNA sequencing targeting Internal Transcribed Spacer (ITS) region and hsp65 gene. The patient was treated with conventional anti-tuberculous drugs.

Efficient degradation of ivermectin by newly isolated Aeromonas taiwanensis ZJB-18,044.

Project description:Ivermectin (IVM) is a widely used antiparasitic agent and acaricide. Despite its high efficiency against nematodes and arthropods, IVM may pose a threat to the environment due to its ecotoxcity. In this study, degradation of IVM by a newly isolated bacterium Aeromonas taiwanensis ZJB-18,044 was investigated. Strain ZJB-18,044 can completely degrade 50 mg/L IVM in 5 d with a biodegradation ability of 0.42 mg/L/h. Meanwhile, it exhibited high tolerance (50 mg/L) to doramectin, emamectin, rifampicin, and spiramycin. It can also efficiently degrade doramectin, emamectin, and spiramycin. The IVM degradation of strain ZJB-18,044 can be inhibited by erythromycin, azithromycin, spiramycin or rifampicin. However, supplement of carbonyl cyanide m-chlorophenylhydrazone, an uncoupler of oxidative phosphorylation, can partially recover the IVM degradation. Moreover, strain ZJB-18,044 cells can pump out excess IVM to maintain a low intracellular IVM concentration. Therefore, the IVM tolerance of strain ZJB-18,044 may be due to the regulation of the intracellular IVM concentration by the activated macrolide efflux pump(s). With the high IVM degradation efficiency, A. taiwanensis ZJB-18,044 may serve as a bioremediation agent for IVM and other macrolides in the environment.

First report of isolation and antibiotic susceptibility pattern of Raoultella electrica from table eggs in Jaipur, India.

Project description:Raoultella electrica, a Gram-negative, non-spore-forming, rod-shaped facultative anaerobe, was identified during a regular investigation of bacterial contamination in table eggs in the winter season. A total of 165 hen's eggs were collected in the winter season from 15 different areas of the city of Jaipur, India. Gram-negative Enterobacteriales were isolated on selective and differential media by the conventional plate method and were further identified by several biochemical tests and 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Commonly prescribed antibiotics for enteric infection were used for antibiotic susceptibility testing. For isolated microorganisms, different resistance patterns were found against the different antibiotics used (p < 0.01). The multiple antibiotic resistance index of bacterial isolates ranged from 0.10 to 0.60. R. electrica strain 1GB/NBRC 109676/KCTC 32430 was isolated for the first time from commercial chicken's eggs.

Rhizobium radiobacter peritonitis: the first case report from India and review.

Project description:BACKGROUND:Rhizobium radiobacter is an opportunistic human pathogen in debilitated patients with foreign plastic intravascular devices and peritoneal dialysis (PD) catheters. We performed a Medline search of the English-language literature on R. radiobacter continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) peritonitis in end-stage renal disease (ESRD) and reviewed 13 cases. CASE PRESENTATION:A 54-year-old male with ESRD secondary to chronic long-standing type II diabetes mellitus presented to the nephrology outpatient department with fever, abdominal pain and cloudy PD effluent. The patient was admitted to the hospital. PD fluid was sent for cell count, Gram stain and culture. The white blood cell (WBC) count in the PD fluid was 6400 mm-3 with 82?% neutrophils. Gram staining of the fluid showed plenty of Gram-negative bacilli. A presumptive diagnosis of CAPD peritonitis was made and empiric intraperitoneal cefazolin and tobramycin were started. The PD fluid culture grew non-fermenting, Gram-negative bacilli identified as R. radiobacter. Empiric antibiotic therapy was continued and the patient's abdominal pain subsided. The peritoneal fluid counts decreased to 50 WBCs mm-3 on day 4. However, his abdominal pain recurred on day 8 and his PD fluid count increased to 300 cells mm-3. The catheter was therefore surgically removed. CONCLUSION:Although R. radiobacter is considered a contaminant, it can cause relapsing symptomatic peritonitis peritoneal catheter removal.

First Report of Tobacco streak virus Infecting Kenaf (Hibiscus cannabinus) in India.

Project description:The natural occurrence of Tobacco streak virus (TSV) in Hibiscus cannabinus was detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay using an antiserum raised against TSV and reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (PCR) using primers specific for the coat protein gene of the virus. Sequence analysis of the PCR products showed 99.6 and 99.5% of maximum identity at nucleotide and amino acid levels, respectively with TSV onion isolate from Kurnool (HM131490).This is the first report of the natural occurrence of TSV on kenaf in India.

Michels syndrome: the first case report from India and review of literature.

Project description:A 2-year 7-month-old girl born out of a consanguineous marriage, presented at our facility with clinical features characterized by the eyelid triad of blepharophimosis, blepharoptosis and epicanthus inversus in association with hypertelorism, cleft palate and craniosynostosis. This constellation of features is suggestive of Michels syndrome. At the time of writing this report, there were only ten reported cases worldwide and to the best of our knowledge, there have been no published reports from India.
