Nonsense-mediated mRNA decay (NMD) is an evolutionarily conserved RNA decay mechanism that has emerged as a potent cell-intrinsic restriction mechanism of retroviruses and positive-strand RNA viruses. However, whether NMD is capable of restricting DNA viruses is not known.
