Individual and Environmental Predictors of Age of First Intercourse and Number of Children by Age 27.

ABSTRACT: Reproductive behavior characteristics may be influenced by both social and individual factors. Recent studies have revealed that personality traits might be related to reproductive characteristics in adulthood. Little is known about potential mediators or moderators of relations between personality and reproductive behavior. The present study examines the relation between personality traits measured in early adolescence and the number of children people have by age 27, with an attempt to identify moderation and mediation effects. We used data from the longitudinal cohort (N = 585) collected as a part of the Child Development Project. Personality was measured with the use of Lanthier's Big Five Personality Questionnaire. Results from regression analyses and structural equation models showed that four of the five personality traits (except extraversion) were related to the number of children individuals had by age 27, and these associations were mediated by the age of first intercourse and participants' familial and educational plans. We also identified moderation effects of IQ and SES both on the associations of personality traits with mediators and the number of children by age 27.

Project description:Prevention strategies that delay the onset of asthma may improve clinical outcomes. To identify early life environmental exposures associated with asthma age-of-onset and potential genetic modifiers of these exposures, we studied 1085 subjects with physician-diagnosed asthma and disease onset at or after age two. Subjects reported retrospectively on their exposure to 17 environmental factors before the age of two. The presence of individual or combinations of these early life exposures was then tested for association with variation in asthma age-of-onset. For exposures significantly associated with age-of-onset, we tested if 26 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) with an established association with allergic disease significantly modified the effect of the exposure. Five environmental exposures were significantly associated with variation in asthma age-of-onset after correction for multiple testing: carpet at home (P = 6 × 10(-5)), a serious chest illness (P = 10(-4)), father a cigarette smoker (P = 6 × 10(-4)) and direct exposure to father's smoking (P = 3 × 10(-4)). Individuals with early childhood asthma onset, between the ages of two and six, were 1.4-fold (CI 1.1-1.9) more likely to report having lived in a house with carpet and 2.1-fold (CI 1.3-3.5) more likely to report suffering a serious chest illness before the age of two, than asthmatics with later disease onset. We further found these individual risks to increase to 3.2-fold (CI 1.7-6.0) if carpet exposure and suffering a serious chest illness co-occurred before age two. Paternal smoking exposures were less likely to be reported by asthmatics with early when compared to later disease onset (OR 0.5, CI 0.3-0.7). There were no significant SNP interactions with these environmental exposures after correction for multiple testing. Our results suggest that disease onset in individuals at a high-risk of developing asthma can potentially be delayed by avoiding exposure to carpet at home and preventing serious chest illnesses during the first 2 years of life.

Project description:BACKGROUND:Little is known about the predictors of sexual intercourse frequency (SIF) among couples trying to conceive despite the well-established link between SIF and fecundity. AIM:To evaluate men's and women's demographic, occupational, and lifestyle predictors of SIF among couples. METHODS:469 Couples without a history of infertility participating in the Longitudinal Investigation of Fertility and the Environment Study (2005-2009) were followed up for ?1 year while trying to conceive. At enrollment, both partners were interviewed about demographic, occupational, lifestyle, and psychological characteristics using standardized questionnaires. Multivariable generalized linear mixed models with Poisson distribution were used to estimate the adjusted percent difference in SIF across exposure categories. OUTCOMES:SIF was recorded in daily journals and summarized as average SIF/mo. RESULTS:The median (interquartile range) SIF during follow-up was 6 (4-9) acts/mo. For every year increase in age for women and men, SIF decreased by -0.8% (95% CI -2.5 to 1.0%) and -1.7% (95% CI -3.1 to -0.3%). Women with high school education or less and those of non-white race had 34.4% and 16.0% higher SIF, respectively. A similar trend was seen for men's education and race. Only couples where both partners (but not just 1 partner) worked rotating shifts had -39.1% (95% CI -61.0 to -5.0%) lower SIF compared to couples where neither partner worked rotating shifts. Men's (but not women's) exercise was associated with 13.2% (95% CI 1.7-26.0%) higher SIF. Diagnosis of a mood or anxiety disorder in men (but not women) was associated with a 26.0% (95% CI -42.7 to -4.4%) lower SIF. Household income, smoking status, body mass index, night work, alcohol intake, and psychosocial stress were not associated with SIF. CLINICAL TRANSLATION:Even among couples trying to conceive, there was substantial variation in SIF. Both partners' age, education, race, and rotating shift work as well as men's exercise and mental health play an important role in determining SIF. CONCLUSIONS:As this was a secondary analysis of an existing study, we lacked information on many pertinent psychological and relationship quality variables and the hormonal status of participants, which could have affected SIF. The unique population-based couple design, however, captured both partners' demographics, occupational characteristics, and lifestyle behaviors in advance of their daily, prospective reporting of SIF, which was a major strength. Important predictors of SIF among couples attempting to conceive include men's exercise and mental health and both partners' age, education, race, and rotating shift work. Project description:Introduction: The concurrence of intellectual disability/global developmental delay and epilepsy (ID/GDD-EP) is very common in the pediatric population. The etiologies for both conditions are complex and largely unknown. The predictors of significant copy number variations (CNVs) are known for the cases with ID/GDD, but unknown for those with exclusive ID/GDD-EP. Importantly, the known predictors are largely from the same ethnic group; hence, they lack replication. Purpose: We aimed to determine and investigate the diagnostic yield of CNV tests, new causative CNVs, and the independent predictors of significant CNVs in Chinese children with unexplained ID/GDD-EP. Materials and methods: A total of 100 pediatric patients with unexplained ID/GDD-EP and 1,000 healthy controls were recruited. The American College of Medical Genetics guideline was used to classify the CNVs. Additionally, clinical information was collected and compared between those with significant and non-significant CNVs. Results: Twenty-eight percent of the patients had significant CNVs, 16% had variants of unknown significance, and 56% had non-significant CNVs. In total, 31 CNVs were identified in 28% (28/100) of cases: 25 pathogenic and 6 likely pathogenic. Eighteen known syndromes were diagnosed in 17 cases. Thirteen rare CNVs (8 novel and 5 reported in literature) were identified, of which three spanned dosage-sensitive genes: 19q13.2 deletion (ATP1A3), Xp11.4-p11.3 deletion (CASK), and 6q25.3-q25.3 deletion (ARID1B). By comparing clinical features in patients with significant CNVs against those with non-significant CNVs, a statistically significant association was found between the presence of significant CNVs and speech and language delay for those aged above 2 years and for those with facial malformations, microcephaly, congenital heart disease, fair skin, eye malformations, and mega cisterna magna. Multivariate logistic regression analysis allowed the identification of two independent significant CNV predictors, which are eye malformations and facial malformations. Conclusion: Our study supports the performance of CNV tests in pediatric patients with unexplained ID/GDD-EP, as there is high diagnostic yield, which informs genetic counseling. It adds 13 rare CNVs (8 novel), which can be accountable for both conditions. Moreover, congenital eye and facial malformations are clinical markers that can aid clinicians to understand which patients can benefit from the CNV testing and which will not, thus helping patients to avoid unnecessary and expensive tests.
