Temporal patterning of neural progenitors leads to the sequential production of diverse neurons. To understand how extrinsic cues influence intrinsic temporal programs, we studied <i>Drosophila</i> mushroom body progenitors (neuroblasts) that sequentially produce only three neuronal types: γ, then α'β', followed by αβ.
