Camellia puhoatensis (Sect. Archecamellia - Theaceae), a new species from Vietnam.

ABSTRACT: A new species of Theaceae, Camellia puhoatensis N.S. Lý, V.D. Luong, T.H. Le, D.H. Nguyen & N.D. Do, sp. nov., is described and illustrated from Nghe An Province, North Central Coastal Region, Vietnam. It is most similar to C. chrysanthoides, C. flavida and C. petelotii within sect. Archecamellia in shape and colouration of leaf, petal, ovary and glabrous stamen, but differs by its young puberulous shoot, mature leaf sparsely puberulous abaxially and leaf base rounded or broadly obtuse, petiole and pedicel puberulous, tepals 12-13, ovary and style pubescent. The comparison between the new species and C. velutina and C. dormoyana is presented. Data on distribution, ecology, phenology, use and provisional conservation assessment of the new species are given along with an illustration and a colour plate.

Begonia catbensis (sect. Coelocentrum, Begoniaceae), a new species from northern Vietnam.

Project description:Begonia catbensis, a new species in Begonia sect. Coelocentrum is described and illustrated. The new species was discovered in lowland limestone hills at Cat Ba National Park and can be easily distinguished from all its congeners by having dendritic hairs on the petiole, adaxial veins and stipules, fimbriate bracts and bracteoles, dense conical bullae on the upper surface of the leaf blade, two tepals in the pistillate flowers and a glabrescent ovary with verrucose wings. Based on IUCN Criteria, the species is currently assessed as "Endangered" (D).

The complete chloroplast genome of Camellia fluviatilis (Theaceae), a wild oil-Camellia species.

Project description:Camellia fluviatilis is an important shrub producing edible seed oil, which is widely cultivated in South China. In this study, the complete chloroplast genome was sequenced and analyzed based on the Illumina HiSeq platform. The results showed that the complete chloroplast genome is 157,041 bp with 37.29% GC content, including a large single copy (LSC) region of 86,718 bp, a small single copy (SSC) region of 18,293 bp, and a pair of inverted repeats (IRs) regions of 26,015 bp. There are 128 genes in the chloroplast genome of C. fluviatilis, including 83 protein-coding genes, 8 ribosomal RNAs, and 37 transfer RNAs. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that C. fluviatilis is closely related to C. lanceoleosa, indicating that both belong to the Sect. Paracamellia Sealy.

Classification of Camellia (Theaceae) species using leaf architecture variations and pattern recognition techniques.

Project description:Leaf characters have been successfully utilized to classify Camellia (Theaceae) species; however, leaf characters combined with supervised pattern recognition techniques have not been previously explored. We present results of using leaf morphological and venation characters of 93 species from five sections of genus Camellia to assess the effectiveness of several supervised pattern recognition techniques for classifications and compare their accuracy. Clustering approach, Learning Vector Quantization neural network (LVQ-ANN), Dynamic Architecture for Artificial Neural Networks (DAN2), and C-support vector machines (SVM) are used to discriminate 93 species from five sections of genus Camellia (11 in sect. Furfuracea, 16 in sect. Paracamellia, 12 in sect. Tuberculata, 34 in sect. Camellia, and 20 in sect. Theopsis). DAN2 and SVM show excellent classification results for genus Camellia with DAN2's accuracy of 97.92% and 91.11% for training and testing data sets respectively. The RBF-SVM results of 97.92% and 97.78% for training and testing offer the best classification accuracy. A hierarchical dendrogram based on leaf architecture data has confirmed the morphological classification of the five sections as previously proposed. The overall results suggest that leaf architecture-based data analysis using supervised pattern recognition techniques, especially DAN2 and SVM discrimination methods, is excellent for identification of Camellia species.

The complete chloroplast genome sequence of Camellia zhaiana (Theaceae), a critically endangered species from China.

Project description:Camellia zhaiana S.X. Yang (Theaceae) is a recently described species reported from Guangxi, China. It was proposed as a critically endangered species according to the IUCN Red List Categories and Criteria. In this study, we report and characterize the complete chloroplast (cp) genome of C. zhaiana using Illumina pair-end sequencing data. This is the first report of a cp genome of a species classified in Camellia section. Longipedicellata. The cp genome of C. zhaiana is 156,627 bp in length and includes a large single-copy region (LSC, 86,196 bp), a small single-copy region (SSC, 18,281 bp), and a pair of inverted repeat regions (IRs, 26,075 bp). The genome contains 135 genes, including 40 tRNA, eight rRNA, and 87 protein-coding genes. Phylogenetic analysis showed a strongly supported sister relationship between C. zhaiana and C. longipedicellata, which is a species classified in sect. Longipedicellata. These data support the previous systematic findings of C. zhaiana and advance the bioinformatics of the genus Camellia.

Project description:Camellia nitidissima is an endangered species. This species contains two varieties. Here, we report on the chloroplast genomes of C. nitidissima var. nitidissima from Fangcheng (GenBank accession MT157617) and Nanning (MT157618), as well as one sample of C. nitidissima var. microcarpa (MT157619) from Nanning. The total chloroplast genomes of C. nitidissima var. nitidissima Fangcheng and Nanning samples are 156,596 bp and 157,567 bp in length, respectively. C. nitidissima var. microcarpa (MT157619) genome is 157,407 bp in length. The three samples possess GC contents of 37.3%, 128 genes, comprising 86 protein-coding genes, 34 tRNA genes, and 8 rRNA genes.

Project description:All the known generic synonyms of Camellia are summarized with their types clarified. Camelliastrum and Desmitus are lectotypified and Salceda is neotypified. "Kailosocarpus" and "Parapiquetia" were not validly published, Theaphylla and Tsia are illegitimate replacement names for Thea, and Kemelia and Tsubaki are illegitimate replacement names for Camellia. Nomenclatural notes on Theopsis and its type are also provided.
