Hemicellulose Recovery from Spent-Sulfite-Liquor: Lignin Removal by Adsorption to Resins for Improvement of the Ultrafiltration Process.

ABSTRACT: In this work, three polymeric resins were examined as alternatives for the separation of hemicellulose and lignin. The aim was to remove the lignin from spent-sulfite-liquor (SSL) prior to ultrafiltration, producing a hemicellulose-rich retentate with high purity, and increase the capacity of the membrane filtration. The lignin in the SSL was sulfonated; thus, two of the resins were anion exchangers and 1 was hydrophobic. The data from the equilibrium studies and adsorption kinetics were fitted to established models, and the results were interpreted based on these observations. The strongly basic anion exchanger performed best with regard to lignin removal. The adsorption followed the Sips isotherm, indicating that the process was cooperative with chemisorption as the main reaction between the adsorbate and adsorbent based on the kinetics. Regeneration of the adsorbent was also possible, wherein 100 g/L NaCl was sufficient to recover 98% of the lignin. The lignin removal had a positive effect on the ultrafiltration process, in which the flux increased by 38% and the extent of separation between the hemicellulose and lignin rose from 17% to 59%.

Project description:Novel adsorption ultrafiltration (ADUF) membrane was designed for the removal of methylene blue (MB) by introducing Chinese herbal waste-based activated carbon (AC) into the ultrafiltration membrane. We prepared AC particles from Chinese herbal medicine waste residue (reed rhizome residue) as a raw material by ZnCl2 activation and introduced them into the ultrafiltration membrane by phase inversion to prepare a reed rhizome residue-based activated carbon adsorption ultrafiltration (RAC-ADUF) membrane. The RAC-ADUF-0.1 membrane was characterized by a series of physical structures and chemical properties, which showed that the prepared membrane has a more hydrophilic surface and high porosity. The RAC-ADUF-0.1 membrane showed an excellent pure water flux of 255.77 L·m-2·h-1 and a high bovine serum albumin rejection of 99.3%. The RAC-ADUF membranes also possessed excellent antifouling performance. Notably, the RAC-ADUF-0.1 membrane provides excellent removal of MB (99% retention) compared to conventional ultrafiltration membranes. The static adsorption capacity was up to 238.48 mg/g. The significant increase in dynamic adsorption capacity on the RAC-ADUF membrane is due to the three-dimensional distribution of RAC particles on the PSF membrane cross section, which provides more active sites and increases the contact time between RAC and MB. By fitting the adsorption kinetics and isothermal adsorption curves, the results showed that the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Langmuir isothermal model were more accurate in explaining the adsorption process. Further kinetic analysis showed that the adsorption process of MB molecules on RAC-ADUF membranes is controlled by both external mass transfer and intraparticle diffusion, with intraparticle diffusion playing a dominant role. In addition, the RAC-ADUF membrane exhibited outstanding adsorption and regeneration abilities, and the MB removal rate stayed at about 95% after 8 adsorption regeneration experiments. In conclusion, this study provides a new idea for the preparation strategy of an adsorption ultrafiltration membrane with high rejection and high permeability and the reuse of Chinese herbal medicine waste residue.

Project description:Wood hemicelluloses have an excellent capacity to form and stabilize oil-in-water emulsions. Galactoglucomannans (GGM) from spruce and glucuronoxylans (GX) from birch provide multifunctional protection against physical breakdown and lipid oxidation in emulsions. Phenolic residues, coextracted with hemicelluloses using the pressurized hot water (PHWE) process, seem to further enhance emulsion stability. According to hypothesis, phenolic residues associated with hemicelluloses deliver and anchor hemicelluloses at the emulsion interface. This study is the first to characterize the structure of the phenolic residues in both GGM- and GX-rich wood extracts and their role in the stabilization of emulsions. PHWE GGM and GX were fractionated by centrifugation to obtain concentrated phenolic residues as one fraction (GGM-phe and GX-phe) and partially purified hemicelluloses as the other fraction (GGM-pur and GX-pur). To evaluate the role of each fraction in terms of physical and oxidative stabilization, rapeseed oil-in-water emulsions were prepared using GGM, GX, GGM-pur, and GX-pur as stabilizers. Changes in droplet-size distribution and peroxide values were measured during a 3-month accelerated storage test. The results for fresh emulsions indicated that the phenolic-rich fractions in hemicelluloses take part in the formation of emulsions. Furthermore, results from the accelerated storage test indicated that phenolic structures improve the long-term physical stability of emulsions. According to measured peroxide values, all hemicelluloses examined inhibited lipid oxidation in emulsions, GX being the most effective. This indicates that phenolic residues associated with hemicelluloses act as antioxidants in emulsions. According to chemical characterization using complementary methods, the phenolic fractions, GGM-phe and GX-phe, were composed mainly of lignin. Furthermore, the total carbohydrate content of the phenolic fractions was clearly lower compared to the starting hemicelluloses GGM and GX, and the purified fractions GGM-pur and GX-pur. Apparently, the phenolic structures were enriched in the GGM-phe and GX-phe fractions, which was confirmed by NMR spectroscopy as well as by other characterization methods. The frequency of the main bonding pattern in lignins, the β-O-4 structure, was clearly very high, suggesting that extracted lignin remains in native form. Furthermore, the lignin carbohydrate complex of γ-ester type was found, which could explain the excellent stabilizing properties of PHWE hemicelluloses in emulsions.
