Objective function estimation for solving optimization problems in gate-model quantum computers.

ABSTRACT: Quantum computers provide a valuable resource to solve computational problems. The maximization of the objective function of a computational problem is a crucial problem in gate-model quantum computers. The objective function estimation is a high-cost procedure that requires several rounds of quantum computations and measurements. Here, we define a method for objective function estimation of arbitrary computational problems in gate-model quantum computers. The proposed solution significantly reduces the costs of the objective function estimation and provides an optimized estimate of the state of the quantum computer for solving optimization problems.

Quantum State Optimization and Computational Pathway Evaluation for Gate-Model Quantum Computers.

Project description:A computational problem fed into a gate-model quantum computer identifies an objective function with a particular computational pathway (objective function connectivity). The solution of the computational problem involves identifying a target objective function value that is the subject to be reached. A bottleneck in a gate-model quantum computer is the requirement of several rounds of quantum state preparations, high-cost run sequences, and multiple rounds of measurements to determine a target (optimal) state of the quantum computer that achieves the target objective function value. Here, we define a method for optimal quantum state determination and computational path evaluation for gate-model quantum computers. We prove a state determination method that finds a target system state for a quantum computer at a given target objective function value. The computational pathway evaluation procedure sets the connectivity of the objective function in the target system state on a fixed hardware architecture of the quantum computer. The proposed solution evolves the target system state without requiring the preparation of intermediate states between the initial and target states of the quantum computer. Our method avoids high-cost system state preparations and expensive running procedures and measurement apparatuses in gate-model quantum computers. The results are convenient for gate-model quantum computations and the near-term quantum devices of the quantum Internet.

Unsupervised Quantum Gate Control for Gate-Model Quantum Computers.

Project description:In near-term quantum computers, the operations are realized by unitary quantum gates. The precise and stable working mechanism of quantum gates is essential for the implementation of any complex quantum computations. Here, we define a method for the unsupervised control of quantum gates in near-term quantum computers. We model a scenario in which a tensor product structure of non-stable quantum gates is not controllable in terms of control theory. We prove that the non-stable quantum gate becomes controllable via a machine learning method if the quantum gates formulate an entangled gate structure.

Scalable distributed gate-model quantum computers.

Project description:A scalable model for a distributed quantum computation is a challenging problem due to the complexity of the problem space provided by the diversity of possible quantum systems, from small-scale quantum devices to large-scale quantum computers. Here, we define a model of scalable distributed gate-model quantum computation in near-term quantum systems of the NISQ (noisy intermediate scale quantum) technology era. We prove that the proposed architecture can maximize an objective function of a computational problem in a distributed manner. We study the impacts of decoherence on distributed objective function evaluation.

Solving dynamic multi-objective problems with a new prediction-based optimization algorithm.

Project description:This paper proposes a new dynamic multi-objective optimization algorithm by integrating a new fitting-based prediction (FBP) mechanism with regularity model-based multi-objective estimation of distribution algorithm (RM-MEDA) for multi-objective optimization in changing environments. The prediction-based reaction mechanism aims to generate high-quality population when changes occur, which includes three subpopulations for tracking the moving Pareto-optimal set effectively. The first subpopulation is created by a simple linear prediction model with two different stepsizes. The second subpopulation consists of some new sampling individuals generated by the fitting-based prediction strategy. The third subpopulation is created by employing a recent sampling strategy, generating some effective search individuals for improving population convergence and diversity. Experimental results on a set of benchmark functions with a variety of different dynamic characteristics and difficulties illustrate that the proposed algorithm has competitive effectiveness compared with some state-of-the-art algorithms.

Breaking limitation of quantum annealer in solving optimization problems under constraints.

Project description:Quantum annealing is a generic solver for optimization problems that uses fictitious quantum fluctuation. The most groundbreaking progress in the research field of quantum annealing is its hardware implementation, i.e., the so-called quantum annealer, using artificial spins. However, the connectivity between the artificial spins is sparse and limited on a special network known as the chimera graph. Several embedding techniques have been proposed, but the number of logical spins, which represents the optimization problems to be solved, is drastically reduced. In particular, an optimization problem including fully or even partly connected spins suffers from low embeddable size on the chimera graph. In the present study, we propose an alternative approach to solve a large-scale optimization problem on the chimera graph via a well-known method in statistical mechanics called the Hubbard-Stratonovich transformation or its variants. The proposed method can be used to deal with a fully connected Ising model without embedding on the chimera graph and leads to nontrivial results of the optimization problem. We tested the proposed method with a number of partition problems involving solving linear equations and the traffic flow optimization problem in Sendai and Kyoto cities in Japan.

mRNA codon optimization with quantum computers.

Project description:Reverse translation of polypeptide sequences to expressible mRNA constructs is a NP-hard combinatorial optimization problem. Each amino acid in the protein sequence can be represented by as many as six codons, and the process of selecting the combination that maximizes probability of expression is termed codon optimization. This work investigates the potential impact of leveraging quantum computing technology for codon optimization. A Quantum Annealer (QA) is compared to a standard genetic algorithm (GA) programmed with the same objective function. The QA is found to be competitive in identifying optimal solutions. The utility of gate-based systems is also evaluated using a simulator resulting in the finding that while current generations of devices lack the hardware requirements, in terms of both qubit count and connectivity, to solve realistic problems, future generation devices may be highly efficient.

Training Optimization for Gate-Model Quantum Neural Networks.

Project description:Gate-based quantum computations represent an essential to realize near-term quantum computer architectures. A gate-model quantum neural network (QNN) is a QNN implemented on a gate-model quantum computer, realized via a set of unitaries with associated gate parameters. Here, we define a training optimization procedure for gate-model QNNs. By deriving the environmental attributes of the gate-model quantum network, we prove the constraint-based learning models. We show that the optimal learning procedures are different if side information is available in different directions, and if side information is accessible about the previous running sequences of the gate-model QNN. The results are particularly convenient for gate-model quantum computer implementations.

Solving molecular docking problems with multi-objective metaheuristics.

Project description:Molecular docking is a hard optimization problem that has been tackled in the past with metaheuristics, demonstrating new and challenging results when looking for one objective: the minimum binding energy. However, only a few papers can be found in the literature that deal with this problem by means of a multi-objective approach, and no experimental comparisons have been made in order to clarify which of them has the best overall performance. In this paper, we use and compare, for the first time, a set of representative multi-objective optimization algorithms applied to solve complex molecular docking problems. The approach followed is focused on optimizing the intermolecular and intramolecular energies as two main objectives to minimize. Specifically, these algorithms are: two variants of the non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm II (NSGA-II), speed modulation multi-objective particle swarm optimization (SMPSO), third evolution step of generalized differential evolution (GDE3), multi-objective evolutionary algorithm based on decomposition (MOEA/D) and S-metric evolutionary multi-objective optimization (SMS-EMOA). We assess the performance of the algorithms by applying quality indicators intended to measure convergence and the diversity of the generated Pareto front approximations. We carry out a comparison with another reference mono-objective algorithm in the problem domain (Lamarckian genetic algorithm (LGA) provided by the AutoDock tool). Furthermore, the ligand binding site and molecular interactions of computed solutions are analyzed, showing promising results for the multi-objective approaches. In addition, a case study of application for aeroplysinin-1 is performed, showing the effectiveness of our multi-objective approach in drug discovery.

Inference of Vohradsky's models of genetic networks by solving two-dimensional function optimization problems.

Project description:The inference of a genetic network is a problem in which mutual interactions among genes are inferred from time-series of gene expression levels. While a number of models have been proposed to describe genetic networks, this study focuses on a mathematical model proposed by Vohradský. Because of its advantageous features, several researchers have proposed the inference methods based on Vohradský's model. When trying to analyze large-scale networks consisting of dozens of genes, however, these methods must solve high-dimensional non-linear function optimization problems. In order to resolve the difficulty of estimating the parameters of the Vohradský's model, this study proposes a new method that defines the problem as several two-dimensional function optimization problems. Through numerical experiments on artificial genetic network inference problems, we showed that, although the computation time of the proposed method is not the shortest, the method has the ability to estimate parameters of Vohradský's models more effectively with sufficiently short computation times. This study then applied the proposed method to an actual inference problem of the bacterial SOS DNA repair system, and succeeded in finding several reasonable regulations.

Improved multi-strategy artificial rabbits optimization for solving global optimization problems.

Project description:Artificial rabbits optimization (ARO) is a metaheuristic algorithm based on the survival strategy of rabbits proposed in 2022. ARO has favorable optimization performance, but it still has some shortcomings, such as weak exploitation capacity, easy to fall into local optima, and serious decline of population diversity at the later stage. In order to solve these problems, we propose an improved multi-strategy artificial rabbits optimization, called IMARO, based on ARO algorithm. In this paper, a roulette fitness distance balanced hiding strategy is proposed so that rabbits can find better locations to hide more reasonably. Meanwhile, in order to improve the deficiency of ARO which is easy to fall into local optimum, an improved non-monopoly search strategy based on Gaussian and Cauchy operators is designed to improve the ability of the algorithm to obtain the global optimal solution. Finally, a covariance restart strategy is designed to improve population diversity when the exploitation is stagnant and to improve the convergence accuracy and convergence speed of ARO. The performance of IMARO is verified by comparing original ARO algorithm with six basic algorithms and seven improved algorithms. The results of CEC2014, CEC2017, CEC2022 show that IMARO has a good exploitation and exploration ability and can effectively get rid of local optimum. Moreover, IMARO produces optimal results on six real-world engineering problems, further demonstrating its efficiency in solving real-world optimization challenges.
