The incidence of head and neck squamous cell carcinomas (HNSCCs) is rising in developed countries. This is driven by an increase in HNSCCs caused by high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV) infections or HPV + HNSCCs. Compared to HNSCCs not caused by HPV (HPV- HNSCCs), HPV + HNSCCs are more responsive to therapy and associated with better oncologic outcomes.
