Chagas disease is caused by the flagellate protozoan <i>Trypanosoma cruzi</i>. Cardiomyopathy and damage to gastrointestinal tissue are the main disease manifestations. There are data suggesting that the immune response to <i>T. cruzi</i> depends on the intestinal microbiota.
