Ionic Liquid Gate-Induced Modifications of Step Edges at SrCoO2.5 Surfaces.

ABSTRACT: Intense electric fields developed during gating at the interface between an ionic liquid and an oxide layer have been shown to lead to significant structural and electronic phase transitions in the entire oxide layer. An archetypical example is the reversible transformation between the brownmillerite SrCoO2.5 and the perovskite SrCoO3 engendered by ionic liquid gating. Here we show using in situ atomic force microscopy studies with photothermal excitation detection, that allows for high quality measurements in the viscous environment of the ionic liquid that the edges of atomically smooth terraces at the surface of SrCoO2.5 films are significantly modified by ionic liquid gating but that the terraces themselves remain smooth. The edges develop ridges that we show, using complementary X-ray photoemission spectroscopy studies, result from the adsorption of hydroxyl groups. Our findings exhibit a way of electrically controlled surface modifications in emergent ionitronic applications.

Crystal step edges can trap electrons on the surfaces of n-type organic semiconductors.

Project description:Understanding relationships between microstructure and electrical transport is an important goal for the materials science of organic semiconductors. Combining high-resolution surface potential mapping by scanning Kelvin probe microscopy (SKPM) with systematic field effect transport measurements, we show that step edges can trap electrons on the surfaces of single crystal organic semiconductors. n-type organic semiconductor crystals exhibiting positive step edge surface potentials display threshold voltages that increase and carrier mobilities that decrease with increasing step density, characteristic of trapping, whereas crystals that do not have positive step edge surface potentials do not have strongly step density dependent transport. A device model and microelectrostatics calculations suggest that trapping can be intrinsic to step edges for crystals of molecules with polar substituents. The results provide a unique example of a specific microstructure-charge trapping relationship and highlight the utility of surface potential imaging in combination with transport measurements as a productive strategy for uncovering microscopic structure-property relationships in organic semiconductors.

Fluorine-free, liquid-repellent surfaces made from ionic liquid-infused nanostructured silicon.

Project description:AbstractLiquid-repellent surfaces based on slippery liquid-infused porous substrates (SLIPS) were prepared from porous, nanostructured silicon surfaces with different surface functionalization, infused with the polar ionic liquid 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium methylsulfate ([C2mim]MeSO4). Contrary to nonpolar SLIPS based on perfluorinated substrates and infusion liquids, [C2mim]MeSO4 forms stable SLIPS with high energy surfaces like native silicon (Si-SiO2) or ionic liquid-functionalized silicon (Si-[C3mim]Cl), whose liquid-repellent properties against low surface tension liquids (toluene, cyclohexane) were demonstrated by very low sliding angles (α < 3°) and low contact angle hysteresis (Δθ < 10°). These polar, ionic liquid-based SLIPS present a promising, environmentally benign extension of liquid-infused substrates to natural, high-energy oxide surfaces.Graphical abstract

Phosphonium Ionic Liquid-Infused Poly(vinyl chloride) Surfaces Possessing Potent Antifouling Properties.

Project description:Microbial fouling is a costly issue, which impacts a wide range of industries, such as healthcare, food processing, and construction industries, and improved strategies to reduce the impact of fouling are urgently required. Slippery liquid-infused porous surfaces (SLIPSs) have recently been developed as a bioinspired approach to prevent antifouling. Here, we report the development of slippery, superhydrophilic surfaces by infusing roughened poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) substrates with phosphonium ionic liquids (PILs). These surfaces were capable of reducing viable bacterial adherence by Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa by >6 log10 cfu mL-1 after 24 h under static conditions relative to control PVC. Furthermore, we report the potential of a series of asymmetric quaternary alkyl PILs with varying alkyl chain lengths (C4-C18) and counteranions to act as antimicrobial agents against both Gram +ve and Gram -ve bacteria and illustrate their potential as antimicrobial alternatives to traditional fluorinated lubricants commonly used in the synthesis of SLIPSs.

Stability and Exchange Processes in Ionic Liquid/Porphyrin Composite Films on Metal Surfaces.

Project description:In light of increasing interest in the development of organic-organic multicomponent heterostructures on metals, this molecular-scale study investigates prototypical composite systems of ultrathin porphyrin and ionic liquid (IL) films on metallic supports under well-defined ultrahigh vacuum conditions. By means of angle-resolved X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, we investigated the adsorption, stability, and thermal exchange of the resulting films after sequential physical vapor deposition of the free-base porphyrin 5,10,15,20-tetraphenylporphyrin, 2H-TPP, and the IL 1-methyl-3-octylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate, [C8C1Im][PF6], on Ag(111) and Au(111). 2H-TPP shows two-dimensional growth of up to two closed molecular layers on Ag(111) and Au(111) and three-dimensional island growth for thicker films. IL films on top of a monolayer of 2H-TPP exhibit Stranski-Krastanov-like growth and are stable up to 385 K. The 2H-TPP layer leads to destabilization of the IL films, compared to the IL in direct contact with the bare metals, by inhibiting the specific adsorption of the ions on the metal surfaces. When the porphyrin is deposited on top of [C8C1Im][PF6] at low temperature, the 2H-TPP molecules adsorb on top of the IL film at first but replace the IL at the IL/metal interfaces upon heating above 240 K. This exchange process is most likely driven by the higher adsorption energy of 2H-TPP on Ag(111) and Au(111) surfaces, as compared to the IL. The behavior observed on Ag(111) and Au(111) is identical. The results are highly relevant for the stability of porphyrin/IL-based thin film catalyst systems and molecular devices, and more generally, stacked organic multilayer architectures.

Pressure-induced liquid-liquid transition in a family of ionic materials.

Project description:Liquid-liquid transition (LLT) between two disordered phases of single-component material remains one of the most intriguing physical phenomena. Here, we report a first-order LLT in a series of ionic liquids containing trihexyl(tetradecyl)phosphonium cation [P666,14]+ and anions of different sizes and shapes, providing an insight into the structure-property relationships governing LLT. In addition to calorimetric proof of LLT, we report that ion dynamics exhibit anomalous behavior during the LLT, i.e., the conductivity relaxation times (τσ) are dramatically elongated, and their distribution becomes broader. This peculiar behavior is induced by isobaric cooling and isothermal compression, with the τσ(TLL,PLL) constant for a given system. The latter observation proves that LLT, in analogy to liquid-glass transition, has an isochronal character. Finally, the magnitude of discontinuity in a specific volume at LLT was estimated using the Clausius-Clapeyron equation.

Dicationic Imidazolium-Based Ionic Liquid Coatings on Zirconia Surfaces: Physico-Chemical and Biological Characterization.

Project description:In the present work, dicationic imidazolium-based ionic liquids (ILs) were investigated as multi-functional coatings on a zirconia (ZrO?) surface to prevent biofilm formation and enhance the wear performance of zirconia while maintaining the material's compatibility with host cells. ILs containing phenylalanine and methionine were synthesized and deposited on zirconia. Intermolecular interactions driving IL deposition on zirconia were studied using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Anti-biofilm activity and cell compatibility were evaluated in vitro after one and seven days, and wear performance was tested using a pin-on-disk apparatus. ILs were observed to form strong hydrogen bonds with zirconia. IL containing phenylalanine formed a stable film on the surface after one and seven days in phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) and artificial saliva and showed excellent anti-biofilm properties against Streptococcussalivarius and Streptococcussanguinis. Compatibility with gingival fibroblasts and pre-osteoblasts was maintained, and conditions for growth and differentiation were preserved. A significantly lower coefficient of friction and wear volume loss were observed for IL-coated surfaces as compared to non-coated substrates. Overall, zirconia is an emerging alternative to titanium in dental implants systems, and this study provides additional evidence of the materials' behavior and IL coatings as a potential surface treatment technology for improvement of its properties.

One-Step Fabrication of Bioinspired Lubricant-Regenerable Icephobic Slippery Liquid-Infused Porous Surfaces.

Project description:Icephobic coating and surfaces are essential for protecting infrastructures such as transmission lines, transportation vehicles, and many others from severe damages of excessive icing. The slippery liquid-infused porous surfaces (SLIPS) are attracting escalating attention because of their low-ice adhesion strength. Despite all of the encouraging laboratory scale results, the SLIPS are still far from being applicable in real environments owing to the key unsolved problem, namely anti-icing durability. Inspired by the functionality of the amphibians' skin, lubricant regenerability was introduced to conventional SLIPS and realized by a facile and scalable fabrication route. A series of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)-based skinlike SLIPS were designed and fabricated by using a one-step method, the solvent evaporation-induced phase separation technique. The obtained skinlike SLIPS were able to regenerate surface lubricant constantly by internal residual stress because of phase separation and survive more than 15 cycles of wiping/regenerating tests. Thanks to the regenerability of the surface lubricant, the new SLIPS demonstrated durable icephobicity, showing a long-term low-ice adhesion strength below 70 kPa, which was only 43% of 160 kPa that for the pristine PDMS (Sylgard 184), even after 15 icing/deicing cycles. This work paves a new and facile way for achieving icephobic durability of SLIPS.

Hydrogen-Induced Step-Edge Roughening of Platinum Electrode Surfaces.

Project description:Electrode surfaces may change their surface structure as a result of the adsorption of chemical species, impacting their catalytic activity. Using density functional theory, we find that the strong adsorption of hydrogen at low electrode potentials promotes the thermodynamics and kinetics of a unique type of roughening of 110-type Pt step edges. This change in surface structure causes the appearance of the so-called "third hydrogen peak" in voltammograms measured on Pt electrodes, an observation that has eluded explanation for over 50 years. Understanding this roughening process is important for structure-sensitive (electro)catalysis and the development of active and stable catalysts.

Improved ionic-liquid-functionalized macroporous supports able to purify nucleic acids in one step.

Project description:Nucleic acids are relevant biopolymers in therapy and diagnosis, for which their purity and biological activity are of crucial relevance. However, these features are difficult to achieve by cost-effective methods. Herein, we report the functionalization of a macroporous chromatographic support functionalized with an ionic liquid (IL) with remarkable performance to purify nucleic acids. An initial screening with distinct IL chemical structures supported in silica was carried out, allowing to identify the IL 1-methyl-3-propylimidazolium chloride as the most promising ligand. A chromatographic macroporous matrix able to be used in preparative liquid chromatography was then functionalized and binding/elution studies were performed. The IL 1-methyl-3-propylimidazolium chloride acts as a multimodal ligand with a remarkable dynamic binding capacity. This macroporous support allows the (one-step) purification of nucleic acids, namely small RNAs, ribosomal RNA, and genomic DNA, from a bacterial lysate, and can be regenerated and reused without compromising its separation performance.

Ionic imbalance induced self-propulsion of liquid metals.

Project description:Components with self-propelling abilities are important building blocks of small autonomous systems and the characteristics of liquid metals are capable of fulfilling self-propulsion criteria. To date, there has been no exploration regarding the effect of electrolyte ionic content surrounding a liquid metal for symmetry breaking that generates motion. Here we show the controlled actuation of liquid metal droplets using only the ionic properties of the aqueous electrolyte. We demonstrate that pH or ionic concentration gradients across a liquid metal droplet induce both deformation and surface Marangoni flow. We show that the Lippmann dominated deformation results in maximum velocity for the self-propulsion of liquid metal droplets and illustrate several key applications, which take advantage of such electrolyte-induced motion. With this finding, it is possible to conceive the propulsion of small entities that are constructed and controlled entirely with fluids, progressing towards more advanced soft systems.
