Some analytic results on interpolating sesqui-harmonic maps.

ABSTRACT: In this article, we study various analytic aspects of interpolating sesqui-harmonic maps between Riemannian manifolds where we mostly focus on the case of a spherical target. The latter are critical points of an energy functional that interpolates between the functionals for harmonic and biharmonic maps. In the case of a spherical target, we will derive a conservation law and use it to show the smoothness of weak solutions. Moreover, we will obtain several classification results for interpolating sesqui-harmonic maps.

Project description:Motivated from the action functional for bosonic strings with extrinsic curvature term we introduce an action functional for maps between Riemannian manifolds that interpolates between the actions for harmonic and biharmonic maps. Critical points of this functional will be called interpolating sesqui-harmonic maps. In this article we initiate a rigorous mathematical treatment of this functional and study various basic aspects of its critical points.

Dynamic maps: a visual-analytic methodology for exploring spatio-temporal disease patterns.

Project description:BackgroundEpidemiologic studies are often confounded by the human and environmental interactions that are complex and dynamic spatio-temporal processes. Hence, it is difficult to discover nuances in the data and generate pertinent hypotheses. Dynamic mapping, a method to simultaneously visualize temporal and spatial information, was introduced to elucidate such complexities. A conceptual framework for dynamic mapping regarding principles and implementation methods was proposed.MethodsThe spatio-temporal dynamics of Salmonella infections for 2002 in the U.S. elderly were depicted via dynamic mapping. Hospitalization records were obtained from the Centers of Medicare and Medicaid Services. To visualize the spatial relationship, hospitalization rates were computed and superimposed onto maps of environmental exposure factors including livestock densities and ambient temperatures. To visualize the temporal relationship, the resultant maps were composed into a movie.ResultsThe dynamic maps revealed that the Salmonella infections peaked at specific spatio-temporal loci: more clusters were observed in the summer months and higher density of such clusters in the South. The peaks were reached when the average temperatures were greater than 83.4 degrees F (28.6 degrees C). Although the relationship of salmonellosis rates and occurrence of temperature anomalies was non-uniform, a strong synchronization was found between high broiler chicken sales and dense clusters of cases in the summer.ConclusionsDynamic mapping is a practical visual-analytic technique for public health practitioners and has an outstanding potential in providing insights into spatio-temporal processes such as revealing outbreak origins, percolation and travelling waves of the diseases, peak timing of seasonal outbreaks, and persistence of disease clusters.

Analytic modeling of inhomogeneous-resolution maps in cryo-electron microscopy and crystallography.

Project description:Refinement of macromolecular atomic models versus experimental maps in crystallography and cryo-electron microscopy is a critical step in structure solution. For an appropriate comparison, model maps should mimic the imperfections in the experimental maps, mainly atomic disorder and limited resolution, which are often inhomogeneous over the molecular region. In the suggested method, these model maps are calculated as the sum of atomic contributions expressed through a specifically designed function describing a solitary spherical wave. Thanks to this function, atomic contributions are analytically expressed through their atomic displacement parameter and local resolution, a value now associated with each atom. Such a full analytic dependence of inhomogeneous-resolution map values on model parameters permits the refinement of all of these parameters together.

Extended Theory of Harmonic Maps Connects General Relativity to Chaos and Quantum Mechanism.

Project description:General relativity and quantum mechanism are two separate rules of modern physics explaining how nature works. Both theories are accurate, but the direct connection between two theories was not yet clarified. Recently, researchers blur the line between classical and quantum physics by connecting chaos and entanglement equation. Here, we showed the Duan's extended HM theory, which has the solution of the general relativity, can also have the solutions of the classic chaos equations and even the solution of Schrödinger equation in quantum physics, suggesting the extended theory of harmonic maps may act as a universal theory of physics.

Electron Paramagnetic Resonance Implemented with Multiple Harmonic Detections Successfully Maps Extracellular pH In Vivo.

Project description:Extracellular acidification indicates a metabolic shift in cancer cells and is, along with tissue hypoxia, a hallmark of tumor malignancy. Thus, non-invasive mapping of extracellular pH (pHe) is essential for researchers to understand the tumor microenvironment and to monitor tumor response to metabolism-targeting drugs. While electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) has been successfully used to map pHe in mouse xenograft models, this method is not sensitive enough to map pHe with a moderate amount of exogenous pH-sensitive probes. Here, we show that a modified EPR system achieves twofold higher sensitivity by using the multiple harmonic detection (MHD) method and improves the robustness of pHe mapping in mouse xenograft models. Our results demonstrate that treatment of a mouse xenograft model of human-derived pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma cells with the carbonic anhydrase IX (CAIX) inhibitor U-104 delays tumor growth with a concurrent tendency toward further extracellular acidification. We anticipate that EPR-based pHe mapping can be expanded to monitor the response of other metabolism-targeting drugs. Furthermore, pHe monitoring can also be used for the development of improved metabolism-targeting cancer treatments.

Heat Capacity of Indium or Gallium Sesqui-Chalcogenides.

Project description:The chalcogenides of p-block elements constitute a significant category of materials with substantial potential for advancing the field of electronic and optoelectronic devices. This is attributed to their exceptional characteristics, including elevated carrier mobility and the ability to fine-tune band gaps through solid solution formation. These compounds exhibit diverse structures, encompassing both three-dimensional and two-dimensional configurations, the latter exemplified by the compound In2Se3. Sesqui-chalcogenides were synthesized through the direct reaction of highly pure elements within a quartz ampoule. Their single-phase composition was confirmed using X-ray diffraction, and the morphology and chemical composition were characterized using scanning electron microscopy. The compositions of all six materials were also confirmed using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy. This investigation delves into the thermodynamic properties of indium and gallium sesqui-chalcogenides. It involves low-temperature heat capacity measurements to evaluate standard entropies and Tian-Calvet calorimetry to elucidate the temperature dependence of heat capacity beyond the reference temperature of 298.15 K, as well as the enthalpy of formation assessed from DFT calculations.

An Adaptive Weighting Algorithm for Interpolating the Soil Potassium Content.

Project description:The concept of spatial interpolation is important in the soil sciences. However, the use of a single global interpolation model is often limited by certain conditions (e.g., terrain complexity), which leads to distorted interpolation results. Here we present a method of adaptive weighting combined environmental variables for soil properties interpolation (AW-SP) to improve accuracy. Using various environmental variables, AW-SP was used to interpolate soil potassium content in Qinghai Lake Basin. To evaluate AW-SP performance, we compared it with that of inverse distance weighting (IDW), ordinary kriging, and OK combined with different environmental variables. The experimental results showed that the methods combined with environmental variables did not always improve prediction accuracy even if there was a strong correlation between the soil properties and environmental variables. However, compared with IDW, OK, and OK combined with different environmental variables, AW-SP is more stable and has lower mean absolute and root mean square errors. Furthermore, the AW-SP maps provided improved details of soil potassium content and provided clearer boundaries to its spatial distribution. In conclusion, AW-SP can not only reduce prediction errors, it also accounts for the distribution and contributions of environmental variables, making the spatial interpolation of soil potassium content more reasonable.

Analytic estimation of statistical significance maps for support vector machine based multi-variate image analysis and classification.

Project description:Multivariate pattern analysis (MVPA) methods such as support vector machines (SVMs) have been increasingly applied to fMRI and sMRI analyses, enabling the detection of distinctive imaging patterns. However, identifying brain regions that significantly contribute to the classification/group separation requires computationally expensive permutation testing. In this paper we show that the results of SVM-permutation testing can be analytically approximated. This approximation leads to more than a thousandfold speedup of the permutation testing procedure, thereby rendering it feasible to perform such tests on standard computers. The speedup achieved makes SVM based group difference analysis competitive with standard univariate group difference analysis methods.

Cell size distribution of lineage data: analytic results and parameter inference.

Project description:Recent advances in single-cell technologies have enabled time-resolved measurements of the cell size over several cell cycles. These data encode information on how cells correct size aberrations so that they do not grow abnormally large or small. Here, we formulate a piecewise deterministic Markov model describing the evolution of the cell size over many generations, for all three cell size homeostasis strategies (timer, sizer, and adder). The model is solved to obtain an analytical expression for the non-Gaussian cell size distribution in a cell lineage; the theory is used to understand how the shape of the distribution is influenced by the parameters controlling the dynamics of the cell cycle and by the choice of cell tracking protocol. The theoretical cell size distribution is found to provide an excellent match to the experimental cell size distribution of E. coli lineage data collected under various growth conditions.

Combining difference and equivalence test results in spatial maps.

Project description:BackgroundRegionally partitioned health indicator values are commonly presented in choropleth maps. Policymakers and health authorities use them among others for health reporting, demand planning and quality assessment. Quite often there are concerns whether the health situation in certain areas can be considered different or equivalent to a reference value.ResultsHighlighting statistically significant areas enables the statement that these areas differ from the reference value. However, this approach does not allow conclusions which areas are sufficiently close to the reference value, although these are crucial for health policy making as well. In order to overcome this weakness a combined integration of statistical difference and equivalence tests into choropleth maps is suggested and the approach is exemplified with health data of Austrian newborns.ConclusionsThe suggested method will improve the interpretability of choropleth maps for policymakers and health authorities.
