Project description:Thirty-eight lava and pyroclastic samples were collected from Mt. Erciyes and Mt. Hasan, the two largest stratovolcanic complexes of the Central Anatolian Volcanic Province in Turkey. More than 1000 zircon crystals were dated by Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (SIMS) applying U-Th disequilibrium and U-Pb methods. Model ages were calculated from zircon 230Th-238U-232Th isotopic compositions in combination with U-Th whole rock data of digested lava samples generated by Multi-Collector Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (MC-ICP-MS). Middle and Late Pleistocene ages dominate the dataset, but are complemented by both older (predominantly Early Pleistocene) and younger (Holocene) ages. U-Th disequilibrium and U-Pb zircon data provide maximum eruption ages that can be further specified by (U-Th)/He geochronology (zircon double dating). Additionally, these data are important to constrain the longevity and size of magmatic systems, and their potential for reactivation leading to potentially hazardous eruptions.

Project description:Nanospheres of lead (Pb) have recently been identified in zircon (ZrSiO4) with the potential to compromise the veracity of U-Pb age determinations. The key assumption that the determined age is robust against the effects of Pb mobility, as long as Pb is not lost from the zircon during subsequent geological events, is now in question. To determine the effect of nanosphere formation on age determination, and whether analysis of nanospheres can yield additional information about the timing of both zircon growth and nanosphere formation, zircons from the Napier Complex in Enderby Land, East Antarctica, were investigated by high-spatial resolution NanoSIMS (Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry) mapping. Conventional SIMS analyses with >µm resolution potentially mixes Pb from multiple nanospheres with the zircon host, yielding variable average values and therefore unreliable ages. NanoSIMS analyses were obtained of 207Pb/206Pb in nanospheres a few nanometres in diameter that were resolved from 207Pb/206Pb measurements in the zircon host. We demonstrate that analysis for 207Pb/206Pb in multiple individual Pb nanospheres, along with separate analysis of 207Pb/206Pb in the zircon host, can not only accurately yield the age of zircon crystallization, but also the time of nanosphere formation resulting from Pb mobilization during metamorphism. Model ages for both events can be derived that are correlated due to the limited range of possible solutions that can be satisfied by the measured 207Pb/206Pb ratios of nanospheres and zircon host. For the Napier Complex zircons, this yields a model age of ca 3110 Ma for zircon formation and a late Archean model age of 2610 Ma for the metamorphism that produced the nanospheres. The Nanosphere Model Age (NMA) method constrains both the crystallization age and age of the metamorphism to ~±135 Ma, a significant improvement on errors derived from counting statistics.

Project description:In this article we present a compilation of U-Pb zircon ages of the whole Xolapa terrane in coastal southern Mexico (dataset 1) as a curved line, obtained from plotting individual zircon grains versus its corresponding age. We identified five low-slope segments of the curved line, each one assigned to a high zircon-production (or preservation) event (HZE). Crystallization temperatures (CT) from Ti-in-zircon geothermometer data on Xolapa rocks were estimated separately from individual zircon grains (dataset 2), in order to compare CT ranges corresponding to each HZE identified. Datasets 1 and 2 are discussed for tectonic implications in the research article "The opening and closure of the Jurassic-Cretaceous Xolapa basin, southern Mexico" Peña-Alonso et al., 2017.

Project description:Discordant U-Pb data of zircon are commonly attributed to Pb loss from domains with variable degree of radiation damage that resulted from α-decay of U and Th, which often complicates the correct age interpretation of the sample. Here we present U-Pb zircon data from 23 samples of ca. 1.7-1.9 Ga granitoid rocks in and around the Siljan impact structure in central Sweden. Our results show that zircon from rocks within the structure that form an uplifted central plateau lost significantly less radiogenic Pb compared to zircon grains in rocks outside the plateau. We hypothesize that zircon in rocks within the central plateau remained crystalline through continuous annealing of crystal structure damages induced from decay of U and Th until uplifted to the surface by the impact event ca. 380 Ma ago. In contrast, zircon grains distal to the impact have accumulated radiation damage at shallow and cool conditions since at least 1.26 Ga, making them vulnerable to fluid-induced Pb-loss. Our data are consistent with studies on alpha recoil and fission tracks, showing that annealing in zircon occurs at temperatures as low as 200-250 °C. Zircon grains from these samples are texturally simple, i.e., neither xenocrysts nor metamorphic overgrowths have been observed. Therefore, the lower intercepts obtained from regression of variably discordant zircon data are more likely recording the age of fluid-assisted Pb-loss from radiation-damaged zircon at shallow levels rather than linked to regional magmatic or tectonic events.

Project description:Few terrestrial localities preserve more than a trace lithic record prior to ca. 3.8 Ga greatly limiting our understanding of the first 700 Ma of Earth history, a period inferred to have included a spike in the bolide flux to the inner solar system at ca. 3.85-3.95 Ga (the Late Heavy Bombardment, LHB). An accessible record of this era may be found in Hadean detrital zircons from the Jack Hills, Western Australia, in the form of ?m-scale epitaxial overgrowths. By comparing crystallization temperatures of pre-3.8 Ga zircon overgrowths to the archive of zircon temperature spectra, it should, in principle, be possible to identify a distinctive impact signature. We have developed Ti-U-Th-Pb ion microprobe depth profiling to obtain age and temperature information within these zircon overgrowths and undertaken a feasibility study of its possible use in identifying impact events. Of eight grains profiled in this fashion, four have overgrowths of LHB-era age. Age vs. temperature profiles reveal a period between ca. 3.85-3.95 Ga (i.e., LHB era) characterized by significantly higher temperatures (approximately 840-875 °C) than do older or younger zircons or zircon domains (approximately 630-750 °C). However, temperatures approaching 900 °C can result in Pb isotopic exchange rendering interpretation of these profiles nonunique. Coupled age-temperature depth profiling shows promise in this role, and the preliminary data we report could represent the first terrestrial evidence for impact-related heating during the LHB.

Project description:This article provides laser-ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) and secondary ionization mass spectrometry (SIMS) U-Pb and U-Th zircon dates for crystals separated from Late Pleistocene dacitic lava dome rocks of the Ciomadul Volcanic Dome Complex (Eastern Carpathians, Romania). The analyses were performed on unpolished zircon prism faces (termed rim analyses) and on crystal interiors exposed through mechanical grinding an polishing (interior analyses). 206Pb/238U ages are corrected for Th-disequilibrium based on published and calculated distribution coefficients for U and Th using average whole-rock and individually analyzed zircon compositions. The data presented in this article were used for the Th-disequilibrium correction of (U-Th)/He zircon geochronology data in the research article entitled "The onset of the volcanism in the Ciomadul Volcanic Dome Complex (Eastern Carpathians): eruption chronology and magma type variation" (Molnár et al., 2018) [1].

Project description:This paper documents the first U-Pb zircon ages for Ashfall Fossil Beds (Nebraska, USA), a terrestrial Konservat-Lagerstätte mass-death assemblage that is arguably the most diverse of its type and age. The Ashfall tephra was correlated with ignimbrites from the Bruneau-Jarbidge volcanic field (12.7-10.5 Ma) in southwest Idaho based on geochemical analysis. The methods and geochemical data supporting the original age assessment of the ash bed, however, were never published, and there has been a persistent misconception that dateable heavy minerals (e.g., zircon) are absent. Notwithstanding, we recovered abundant zircons from Ashfall Fossil Beds, and from an ash bed ~6 km to the southeast at Grove Lake, Nebraska, and analyzed them through LA-ICP-MS. Our new zircon U-Pb age of 11.86 ± 0.13 Ma substantiates correlation of the Ashfall Fossil Beds deposit to tuffs originating from the Bruneau-Jarbidge caldera (~12.7-10.5 Ma). Our U-Pb zircon age of 6.42 ± 0.06 Ma for the Grove Lake ash bed coincides with supervolcanic activity in the Heise volcanic field (6.6-4.3 Ma) in eastern Idaho. These new dates improve age constraints of strata comprising the Ogallala Group and the important paleontological site. Moreover, we find that detrital and airfall zircons are unevenly distributed in the stratified ash beds we describe herein and presumably in similar deposits worldwide. Therefore, a higher-resolution sampling scheme is necessary in such cases.

Project description:The formation and evolution of the landscape of the Chinese Loess Plateau (CLP) is debated because of uncertainties regarding dust provenance. We present a quantitative estimation of dust source contributions to the CLP, based on more than 37,100 detrital zircon U-Pb ages, combined with mineral assemblages and isotope analyses. Our results reveal that the CLP was stepwise formed by ~8 million years (Ma) and is mainly composed of material from the Northeastern Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau, with stepwise shifts in relative contributions of different eolian silt sources occurring at ~2.6 Ma and 1.5 to 1.2 Ma. We infer that these changes were driven by stepwise global cooling, which induced aridification and enhanced silt production in glaciated-cold climate dust source regions, as well as dust ablation in the expanded arid regions. We propose that global cooling, rather than regional tectonic deformation, was the main driver of the formation and evolution of the CLP during late Cenozoic.

Project description:Zircon U-Pb geochronology was carried out on plutonic rocks from Phnom Daek, Phnom Koy Rmeas, Svay Chras, Kon Mom, Koh Nheak, Andong Meas, Oyadav South, Svay Leu, and Phnom Soporkaley. The zircon U-Pb ages from the plutonic rocks determined in this study can be roughly divided into two groups. One is the Late Permian to Triassic ages of 278-202 Ma for the Phnom Daek, Phnom Koy Rmeas, Oyadav South, Svay Leu, and Phnom Soporkaley, and the other is the early Cretaceous ages of 118-98 Ma for the Svay Chras, Kon Mom, Koh Nheak, and Andong Meas samples. The plutonic rocks from Phnom Daek, Phnom Koy Rmeas, Svay Leu, Oyadav South, and Phnom Soporkaley were likely formed by magmatic activity in the Loei Fold Belt. These plutonic rocks were likely formed in an extensional setting and/or a region where the continental crust was thin. The plutonic rocks of Svay Chras, Kon Mom, Koh Nheak, and Andong Meas were likely formed by magmatic activity in the Dalat-Kratie Fold Belt, related to the NW-directed subduction of the Paleo-Pacific Ocean plate. These plutonic rocks are thought to correspond to the Dinhquan suite in southern Vietnam. The Kon Mom and Koh Nheak plutonic rocks fall within the alkaline series, which suggests that the magma genesis was deep and far from the western Paleo-Pacific Ocean plate. Magmatic activity in the Dalat-Kratie Fold Belt migrated oceanward as a whole during the Cretaceous.

Project description:The data in this article contains major, trace and rare earth element concentrations of apatite, and statistic analysis of apatite morphology in the granitoid rocks from the Edong ore district, South China, together with zircon U-Pb dating results for these rocks. Both the ore-associated and barren granitoids yield similar ages, including quartz diorite in the Fuzishan Cu-Au skarn deposit (138.6 ± 2.9?Ma), quartz monzodiorite in the Niutoushan Cu skarn deposit (137.8 ± 1.8?Ma), quartz diorite in the Ouyangshan Cu skarn deposit (138.4 ± 1.2?Ma), Liujiawan quartz monzodiorite (135.0 ± 2.4?Ma), and Bengqiaodi quartz monzodiorite porphyry (138.7 ± 1.1?Ma). Apatite occurs in all the minerals for each rock sample, and a detailed petrographic analysis shows the majority of them are early formed mineral phase. The F, Cl, SO3 contents in apatite are different, those in ore-associated rocks show higher values than barren ones. Li, Ni, Co, V contents are also higher in apatites from the ore-associated rocks than in barren rocks. Apatite (La/Sm)N and (Yb/Sm)N ratio show a positive correlation for ore-associated rocks but a negative correlation for barren rocks.
