A general method for analyzing arbitrary planar negative-refractive-index multilayer slab optical waveguide structures.

ABSTRACT: In this paper, a general method for analyzing arbitrary planar negative-refractive-index (NRI) multilayer slab optical waveguide structures was proposed. Some degenerated examples were introduced to prove the accuracy of the proposed method. The analytical and numerical results show excellent agreement. The method can also be degenerated to analyze arbitrary planar conventional optical waveguide structures. Based on this general method, the analysis and calculation of any kinds of planar NRI slab optical waveguide structures and planar conventional optical waveguide structures can be achieved easily.

Photonic crystal and quasi-crystals providing simultaneous light coupling and beam splitting within a low refractive-index slab waveguide.

Project description:Coupling between free space components and slab waveguides is a common requirement for integrated optical devices, and is typically achieved by end-fire or grating coupling. Power splitting and distribution requires additional components. Usually grating couplers are used in combination with MMI/Y-splitters to do this task. In this paper, we present a photonic crystal device which performs both tasks simultaneously and is able to couple light at normal incidence and near normal incidence. Our approach is scalable to large channel counts with little impact on device footprint. We demonstrate in normal incidence coupling with multi-channel splitting for 785 nm light. Photonic crystals are etched into single mode low refractive index SiON film on both SiO2/Si and borosilicate glass substrate. Triangular lattices are shown to provide coupling to 6 beams with equal included angle (60°), while a quasi-crystal lattice with 12-fold rotational symmetry yields coupling to 12 beams with equal included angle (30°). We show how to optimize the lattice constant to achieve efficient phase matching between incident and coupled mode wave vectors, and how to adjust operating wavelength from visible to infrared wavelengths.

Optical planar waveguide for cell counting.

Project description:Low cost counting of cells has medical applications in screening, military medicine, disaster medicine, and rural healthcare. In this report, we present a shallow, buried, planar waveguide fabricated by potassium ion exchange in glass that enables low-cost and rapid counting of metal-tagged objects that lie in the evanescent field of the waveguide. Laser light transmitted through the waveguide was attenuated proportionately to the presence of metal-coated microstructures fabricated from photoresist. This technology enables the low-cost enumeration of cells from blood, urine, or other biofluids.

Acoustic Analogues of High-Index Optical Waveguide Devices.

Project description:High index optical waveguide devices such as slab waveguides, strip waveguides and fibers play extremely important roles in a wide range of modern applications including telecommunications, sensing, lasing, interferometry, and resonant amplification. Yet, transposing these advantageous applications from optics to acoustics remains a fundamental practical challenge, since most materials exhibit refractive indices lower than that of air for sound waves. Here, we demonstrate the relevance of acoustic metamaterials for tackling this pivotal problem. More specifically, we consider a metamaterial built from subwavelength air-filled acoustic pipes engineered to effectively exhibit a higher refractive index than homogenous air. We show that such medium can be employed to realize acoustic equivalents of dielectric slab or strip waveguides, and optical fibers. Unlike conventional acoustic pipes, our guiding approach allows the waveguide to remain open to the external medium, which opens an abundance of new opportunities in noise management, medical imaging, underwater communication systems, and sensing.

Slab Waveguide and Optical Fibers for Novel Plasmonic Sensor Configurations.

Project description:The use of plasmonic sensor devices often requires replaceable parts and disposable chips for easy, fast and on-site detection analysis. In light of these requests, we propose a novel low-cost surface plasmon resonance sensor platform for possible selective detection of analytes in aqueous solutions. It is based on a Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) slab waveguide with a thin gold film on the top surface inserted in a special holder, designed to produce the plasmonic resonance at the gold-dielectric interface. A wide-band light is launched in the PMMA slab waveguide through a trench realized in the holder directly, and illuminated with a PMMA plastic optical fiber (POF) to excite surface Plasmon waves. The output light is then collected by another PMMA POF kept at the end of the slab at an angle of 90° to the trench, and carried to a spectrometer. In this configuration, the trench has been used because a large incident angle is required for surface plasmon resonance excitation. The preliminary results showed that the sensor's performances make it suitable for bio-chemical applications. The easy replacement of the chip allows for the production of an engineered platform by simplifying the measurement procedures.

Optical Planar Waveguide Sensor with Integrated Digitally-Printed Light Coupling-in and Readout Elements.

Project description:Optical planar waveguide sensors, able to detect and process information from the environment in a fast, cost-effective, and remote fashion, are of great interest currently in different application areas including security, metrology, automotive, aerospace, consumer electronics, energy, environment, or health. Integration of networks of these systems together with other optical elements, such as light sources, readout, or detection systems, in a planar waveguide geometry is greatly demanded towards more compact, portable, and versatile sensing platforms. Herein, we report an optical temperature sensor with a planar waveguide architecture integrating inkjet-printed luminescent light coupling-in and readout elements with matched emission and excitation. The first luminescent element, when illuminated with light in its absorption band, emits light that is partially coupled into the propagation modes of the planar waveguide. Remote excitation of this element can be performed without the need for special alignment of the light source. A thermoresponsive liquid crystal-based film regulates the amount of light coupled out from the planar waveguide at the sensing location. The second luminescent element partly absorbs the waveguided light that reaches its location and emits at longer wavelengths, serving as a temperature readout element through luminescence intensity measurements. Overall, the ability of inkjet technology to digitally print luminescent elements demonstrates great potential for the integration and miniaturization of light coupling-in and readout elements in optical planar waveguide sensing platforms.

Diffractive Optical Analysis for Refractive Index Sensing using Transparent Phase Gratings.

Project description:We report the implementation of a micro-patterned, glass-based photonic sensing element that is capable of label-free biosensing. The diffractive optical analyzer is based on the differential response of diffracted orders to bulk as well as surface refractive index changes. The differential read-out suppresses signal drifts and enables time-resolved determination of refractive index changes in the sample cell. A remarkable feature of this device is that under appropriate conditions, the measurement sensitivity of the sensor can be enhanced by more than two orders of magnitude due to interference between multiply reflected diffracted orders. A noise-equivalent limit of detection (LoD) of 6 × 10(-7) was achieved with this technique with scope for further improvement.

Polarization-dependent optical absorption of MoS₂ for refractive index sensing.

Project description:As a noncentrosymmetric crystal with spin-polarized band structure, MoS2 nanomaterials have attracts increasing attention in many areas such as lithium ion batteries, flexible electronic devices, photoluminescence and valleytronics. The investigation of MoS2 is mainly focused on the electronics and spintronics instead of optics, which restrict its applications as key elements of photonics. In this work, we demonstrate the first observation of the polarization-dependent optical absorption of the MoS2 thin film, which is integrated onto an optical waveguide device. With this feature, a novel optical sensor combining MoS2 thin-film and a microfluidic structure has been constituted to achieve the sensitive monitoring of refractive index. Our work indicates the MoS2 thin film as a complementary material to graphene for the optical polarizer in the visible light range, and explores a new application direction of MoS2 nanomaterials for the construction of photonic circuits.

Large refractive index changes in ZIF-8 thin films of optical quality.

Project description:ZIF-8 (zeolitic imidazolate framework-8) is a member of the growing family of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). Homogeneous and crack-free ZIF-8 thin films of optical quality were crystallized on silicon and glass substrates. The refractive index of such ZIF-8 thin films in the complete visible light spectrum was directly determined for the first time. By incubating the porous films in different substances, the refractive index could be modulated over a wide range, two times larger than previously reported for MOF thin films. Reversible refractive index switching in ZIF-8 thin films was performed via the liquid and the gas phase. The ability to adjust the refractive index over a broad range enables the use of ZIF-8 films for applications in optical devices such as sensors, coatings for mirrors and lenses, or as an optical medium in more complex optical devices.

Optical characteristics of refractive-index-matching diffusion layer in organic light-emitting diodes.

Project description:We developed a diffusion layer with a refractive index-matching layer added to a transparent nanoscale polymer-based structure to obtain its effective scattering effects. The diffusion layer had higher haze when the refractive index-matching layer to a higher refractive index was used. This diffusion layer was applied to conventional organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) and micro-cavity OLEDs (MC-OLEDs) to evaluate the characteristics. When a diffusion layer was applied to conventional OLEDs, the external quantum efficiency (EQE) was 31.1% higher than that of the device without a diffusion layer due to the reduction of the substrate mode, and the viewing angle characteristic was also improved. Then, when the diffusion layer was applied to the MC-OLEDs, all devices showed similar EQE values regardless of the presence or absence of the diffusion layer, and the viewing-angle-dependent characteristics were greatly improved by the diffusion layer. Furthermore, when the diffusion layer was used with polarizer film, the black color implementation was not affected by the polarizer film, proving that it is applicable to actual OLED display products.

Optical-CT 3D Dosimetry Using Fresnel Lenses with Minimal Refractive-Index Matching Fluid.

Project description:Telecentric optical computed tomography (optical-CT) is a state-of-the-art method for visualizing and quantifying 3-dimensional dose distributions in radiochromic dosimeters. In this work a prototype telecentric system (DFOS-Duke Fresnel Optical-CT Scanner) is evaluated which incorporates two substantial design changes: the use of Fresnel lenses (reducing lens costs from $10-30K t0 $1-3K) and the use of a 'solid tank' (which reduces noise, and the volume of refractively matched fluid from 1 ltr to 10 cc). The efficacy of DFOS was evaluated by direct comparison against commissioned scanners in our lab. Measured dose distributions from all systems were compared against the predicted dose distributions from a commissioned treatment planning system (TPS). Three treatment plans were investigated including a simple four-field box treatment, a multiple small field delivery, and a complex IMRT treatment. Dosimeters were imaged within 2 h post irradiation, using consistent scanning techniques (360 projections acquired at 1 degree intervals, reconstruction at 2mm). DFOS efficacy was evaluated through inspection of dose line-profiles, and 2D and 3D dose and gamma maps. DFOS/TPS gamma pass rates with 3%/3mm dose difference/distance-to-agreement criteria ranged from 89.3% to 92.2%, compared to from 95.6% to 99.0% obtained with the commissioned system. The 3D gamma pass rate between the commissioned system and DFOS was 98.2%. The typical noise rates in DFOS reconstructions were up to 3%, compared to under 2% for the commissioned system. In conclusion, while the introduction of a solid tank proved advantageous with regards to cost and convenience, further work is required to improve the image quality and dose reconstruction accuracy of the new DFOS optical-CT system.
