It's all in the recipe: How to increase domestic leisure tourists' experiential loyalty to local food.

ABSTRACT: This study examines experiential loyalty in the context of local food consumption by domestic leisure tourists. A conceptual framework is developed to understand factors which increase tourists' propensity to exhibit experiential loyalty. Relationships between independent factors and the dependent variable of experiential loyalty are examined using a binary logistic regression model. The centrality of local food to tourists is the most important factor in increasing experiential loyalty, although cultural motivation and satisfaction are also predictors. The results provide insights for government and private tourism enterprises, with practical recommendations outlined.

Food Markets: A Motivation-Based Segmentation of Tourists.

Project description:Food markets are becoming popular as new spaces for recreation, and this research aims to discover the motivations driving the tourists that visit these markets. Factorial analysis, cluster analysis and Student's t-test were applied on 456 surveys from two food markets in Córdoba (Spain). Three motivational factors were obtained: Gastronomic experience and novelty; hedonism and leisure; and the relationship of the experience with work. Segmenting and analyzing the profile of the tourist may help economic agents develop new strategies for the tourism management of a destination and more accurate marketing and branding strategies that target specific customers with a niche message. The study could help develop products that align with tourists' motives to increase satisfaction and loyalty.

The effect of food tourism experiences on tourists' subjective well-being.

Project description:Food has become a crucial factor in attracting tourists to destinations. Providing tourists with satisfying food experiences has become a significant concern for tourist destinations. This study examines how tourists' food experiences contribute to their subjective well-being. After conducting a questionnaire survey of 360 tourists who experienced Zibo barbecue food, and analyzing the data using structural equation modeling, it was found that: tourists' food sensory experience, service experience, and environmental experience positively affect their satisfaction and subjective well-being; The effect of these experiences on tourists' satisfaction is mediated by tourist attitude; Tourist attitude and satisfaction play a chain mediating role in the effect of sensory experience, service experience, and environmental experience on tourists' subjective well-being. The research findings help to deepen the understanding of the relationship between food tourism experience and subjective well-being, enrich the theoretical research on food experience and tourists' well-being, and have insightful significance for the development and construction of other tourist destinations.

The impact of a local sugar sweetened beverage health promotion and price increase on sales in public leisure centre facilities.

Project description:BackgroundWe aimed to evaluate the impact of a local sugar sweetened beverages (SSB) health promotion and 20p price increase in leisure centre venues and estimate the impact on consumption.MethodMonthly cold drinks sales data and attendance at leisure centres across the city of Sheffield were analysed over the period January 2015-July 2017. Interrupted time-series methods were employed to estimate changes in consumption per attendance of SSB and non-SSB cold drinks following the introduction of the SSB policy from August 2016 adjusting for seasonal variation and autocorrelation. SSB price elasticities were estimated with fixed effects log-log models by SSB product type (soda can, soda bottle, soda post mix, energy drinks, juice from concentrate).FindingsWe estimated a 31% (95% CI 4%, 59%) reduction in units of SSB sold per attendance in the year since the policy was introduced. We did not observe substitution effects to fruit juice or water but found sales of other artificially sweetened non-SSB products increased by 27% (95% CI 6%, 47%) after the introduction of the tax. Price elasticity analysis identified that a 1% increase in price alongside health promotion leads to a 3.8% (95% CI 3.1% 4.4%) decrease in demand for SSB's. Price elasticity of demand was highest for child friendly and high caffeine energy drinks.InterpretationDemand for SSB drinks at leisure centre venues is highly responsive to the policy, particularly for child-friendly and high caffeine energy drinks, compared with other SSB tax policy evaluations. The policy also increased purchases of carbonated non-SSB.

"It's a war! It's a battle! It's a fight!": Do militaristic metaphors increase people's threat perceptions and support for COVID-19 policies?

Project description:At the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, governments around the world employed militaristic metaphors to draw attention to the dangers of the virus. But, do militaristic metaphors truly affect individuals' perceived threat of the COVID-19 virus and increase their support for corresponding restrictive policies? This study assessed the effects of fictitious newspaper articles that described COVID-19 policies using similarly negatively valenced metaphors but with differing militaristic connotations (e.g., "war" vs. "struggle"). Overall, data from three framing experiments (N = 1114) in Germany and the United States indicate limited evidence on the effectiveness of the tested militaristic metaphors. In the U.S. context, the non-militaristic concept of struggle was consistently more strongly associated with the desired outcomes than militaristic metaphors were. In Studies 2 and 3, we also tested whether reporting using a narrative or straightforward facts had additional influence on the framing effect. A congruency effect of the use of a narrative and of warfare metaphors was found in the German sample, but not in that of the United States. Results of post-experimental norming studies (N = 437) in both countries revealed that the metaphor of war is associated with people ascribing greater responsibility to their governments, whereas the concept of struggle triggers a sense of individual responsibility. These results are discussed in terms of the usefulness and appropriateness of militaristic metaphors in the context of a pandemic.

Exploring the impact of functional, symbolic, and experiential image on approach behaviors among state-park tourists from India, Korea, and the USA

Project description:This study provides insights into the influence of state park image, visitor emotions, and place identity on visitors’ revisit intentions by considering the moderating impact of national culture. A quantitative process with the data collected in India, Korea, and the US was used. Hierarchical regression analysis evidences the moderating role of national culture, which is hardly explored in the state park context. Results confirm that most hypotheses are fully or partially accepted, which suggests that brand image and national culture influence visitor intention. This study helps practitioners better understand the relevance of national culture in developing appropriate visitor attraction/retention strategies.

Global Is Local: Interprofessional Experiential Learning for Migrant Farmworker Health Equity.

Project description:Purpose: Medical educators recognize the importance of addressing social determinants of health and providing opportunities for learners to work with diverse populations. Still, social, geographic, resource, and language barriers prevent institutions from connecting with globally diverse populations within their own communities. In this article, we describe the migrant farmworker health course at the University of Minnesota, the importance of longitudinal partnership with community-based organizations, and ways to increase access to care and educate health professional learners in health equity. Methods: The migrant farmworker health course is a clinical rotation that combines didactic learning on social determinants of health with hands-on clinical experience. Learners work with community organizations to provide mobile health care while learning about a diverse and underserved rural population. Twenty-eight learners who participated in the course between 2015 and 2019 were surveyed about their experience, knowledge, and skills gained, and recommendations for improvement. Results: Over 90% of participants rated their overall experience in the course as "good" or "outstanding." Most learners increased confidence in the subjects that were covered during didactic sessions. Qualitative feedback provided insight on how the migrant farmworker health course shaped learners' understanding of social determinants of health and influenced their career trajectories. Conclusion: The migrant farmworker health course has educated interprofessional learners and is expanding to include more opportunities for mobile health care. The feedback from this survey helped improve didactic teaching and will help deepen relationships with community partners. Learning through service with global populations locally in a "global is local" rotation is a rewarding way to engage in and learn about health equity.

"Maybe it's Not Just the Food?" A Food and Mood Focus Group Study.

Project description:Epidemiological and intervention studies in nutritional psychiatry suggest that the risk of mood disorders is associated with what we eat. However, few studies use a person-centred approach to explore the food and mood relationship. In this qualitative study of 50 Australian participants, we explored individuals' experiences with food and mood as revealed during focus group discussions. Using a thematic template analysis, we identified three themes in the food and mood relationship: (i) social context: familial and cultural influences of food and mood, (ii) social economics: time, finance, and food security, and (iii) food nostalgia: unlocking memories that impact mood. Participants suggested that nutrients, food components or food patterns may not be the only way that food impacts mood. Rather, they described the social context of who, with, and where food is eaten, and that time, finances, and access to healthy fresh foods and bittersweet memories of foods shared with loved ones all impacted their mood. Findings suggest that quantitative studies examining the links between diet and mood should look beyond nutritional factors and give increased attention to the cultural, social, economic, and identity aspects of diet.

Airbnb and neighborhood crime: The incursion of tourists or the erosion of local social dynamics?

Project description:The proliferation of internet-based home-sharing platforms like Airbnb has raised heated debates, with many in the general public believing that the presence of Airbnb listings can lead to an increase in crime and disorder in residential neighborhoods. Despite the importance of this debate to residents, policymakers, and other stakeholders, few studies have examined the causal linkage between Airbnb listings and crime in neighborhoods. We conduct the first such empirical test in Boston neighborhoods, focusing on two potential mechanisms: (1) the inflow of tourists might generate or attract crime; and (2) the creation of transient properties undermines local social dynamics. Corresponding to these mechanisms, we examine whether the number of tourists (approximated with reviews) or the prevalence of listings predict more incidents of private conflict, social disorder, and violence both concurrently and in the following year. We find evidence that increases in Airbnb listings-but not reviews-led to more violence in neighborhoods in later years. This result supports the notion that the prevalence of Airbnb listings erodes the natural ability of a neighborhood to prevent crime, but does not support the interpretation that elevated numbers of tourists bring crime with them.

It's not about the money. EU funds, local opportunities, and Euroscepticism.

Project description:Growing Euroscepticism across the European Union (EU) leaves open questions as to what citizens expect to gain from EU Membership and what influences their dissent for EU integration. This paper looks at the EU Structural Funds, one of the largest and most visible expenditure items in the EU budget, to test their impact on electoral support for the EU. By leveraging the Referendum on Brexit held in the United Kingdom, a spatial RDD analysis offers causal evidence that EU money does not influence citizens' support for the EU. Conversely, the analysis shows that EU funds mitigate Euroscepticism only where they are coupled with tangible improvements in local labour market conditions, the ultimate objective of this form of EU intervention. Money cannot buy love for the EU, but its capacity to generate new local opportunities certainly can.
