Blood lead concentration and its associated factors in preschool children in eastern Iran: a cross-sectional study.

ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND:Lead is a toxic metal that affects almost every organ in the body. Children are more susceptible to lead toxicity because they ingest non-food items (pica), have oral exploratory habits, absorb more substantial amounts of ingested lead compared to adults, and have a developing central nervous system. This study describes venous blood lead concentrations (BLC) in young children living in Birjand, Iran. METHODS:A cross-sectional study was performed in 2016 on children 1-7?years of age who were referred to healthcare centers in Birjand City. Demographic information was obtained, and their BLC was tested using atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS). RESULTS:Four hundred children were tested. Their mean age was 52.37?±?23.77?months; their mean BLC was 2.49?±?2.64??g/dL (median 1.85??g/dL). Thirty-two (8%) children had a BLC?>?5??g/dL. Project description:BackgroundOverweight and obesity among children has emerged as one of the most serious public health concerns in the 21st century, which is a predictor of adulthood obesity, morbidity and mortality. The objective of this study was to assess the prevalence of overweight /obesity and associated factors among preschool children.MethodsA community based cross-sectional study was conducted in Gondar City from February 14 to March 4, 2016. Multi stage sampling technique was used to select a total of 504 preschool children. Data were collected using structured interviewer administered questionnaire and anthropometric measurements. Data were entered using Epidata version 3.1 and analyzed using SPSS version 20 and WHO 2007 Anthro version 2.0.4 software. Both bivariate and multivariate logistic regression analysis were performed to identify associated factors. P values <0.05 with 95% confidence level were used to declare statistical significance.ResultsA total of 500 study participants were included with 99.2% response rate and 51.6% were girls while 48.4% were boys. The mean (±SD) age of participants was 47.68 ±7.19 months. The combined prevalence of overweight /obesity was 13.8% (95%CI; 10.6, 17.2) the specific being 9.6% for overweight and 4.2% for obesity. The multivariable analysis indicated that the age group between 36-47 months [AOR = 2.38 (95%CI; 1.27,4.46)],high dietary diversity[AOR = 3.73(95%CI;1.15,12.54),consumption of sweet food[AOR = 2.69 (95%CI,1.21, 5.98)],time spent in watching television>2hr/day [AOR = 4.01 (95%CI;2.22, 7.26)] and mother's education at secondary level [AOR = 0.35 (95% CI; 0.12, 0.96)] were associated with overweight/obesity among preschool children.ConclusionsOnce considered a high income country problem, result of this study in urban city like Gondar reveals that overweight/obesity is on the rise in urban Ethiopia, which indicates the need for formulating preventive programs and policies during a child's early years.

Project description:BackgroundFollowing increased screening efforts and the use of thin-slice computed tomography (CT), there has been a considerable increase in the incidence of ground-glass nodules (GGNs) in adults. As a result, we have more and more treatments for ground-glass nodules in adults, but few in children. Most think development pattern of pulmonary GGNs is lung inflammation, tumor, or tuberculosis that are more related to acquired or environmental factors. By studying the incidence of pulmonary GGNs in preschool children, we sought to determine whether we had ground glass nodules in the lung before we were teenagers, but we didn't pay attention to them until later. If the hypothesis holds, we may change the cognition and treatment strategies of ground glass nodules. Even not, there are few epidemiological studies with big data that can fill this gap.MethodsWe retrospectively collected the data of all preschool children who had undergone CT at the Children's Hospital of Zhejiang University School of Medicine from 2013 to 2020. These data were filtered according to the following exclusion criteria: severe artifacts, data with identical names to the original data; and patients without follow-up records (≥3 months). Inclusion criteria: must have undergone thin-slice CT (≤1.25 mm) at the first and last follow-up. Two thoracic radiologists with 5 years of experience and another senior one assessed the images.ResultsThere were a total of 13,361 cases after relevant exclusions, 311 patients were finally enrolled. Clinical features: age at diagnosis (year): 3.56±1.84, female: 147, male: 164, follow-up interval (month): 6.90±4.74, leukemia: 99, pneumonia: 21, lung cyst: 8, space-occupying lesions outside the lungs: 69, foreign body in respiratory tract: 6. After manual screening and reading, only 1 patient meets all requirements. The results showed that between 2013 and 2020, the incidence of GGNs that could be basically determined in the Children's Hospital of Zhejiang University School of Medicine was 0.32%.ConclusionsThere have been few previous studies of GGNs in children, and based on our study, we found that there is still some associated morbidity for preschool children, it is rarely found when they are young.

Project description:Visual-motor integration (VMI) is related to children's academic performance and school readiness. VMI scores measured using the Beery-Bucktenicka Developmental Test of Visual-Motor Integration (Beery-VMI) can differ due to differences in cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds. This study compared the VMI scores of Malaysian preschoolers with the corresponding US norms and determined the association between their VMI scores and socioeconomic factors. A cross-sectional study was conducted among 435 preschoolers (mean age: 5.95±0.47 years; age range: 5.08-6.83 years) from randomly selected public and private preschools. VMI scores were measured using Beery-VMI in the preschools' classrooms. Information on the socioeconomic characteristics of the preschoolers was obtained using a parent-report questionnaire. One sample t-test was used to compare their VMI scores with the corresponding US norms. Multivariate logistic regression models were used to explore the influence of socioeconomic factors on the preschoolers' VMI scores. Overall, Malaysian preschoolers' VMI performance was similar to the US standardized norms (p>0.05). Children from low-income families were twice likely to obtain lower than average VMI scores than those from higher-income families (OR = 2.47, 95%CI 1.05, 5.86). Children enrolled at public preschools were more likely to obtain a lower than average VMI score than those who enrolled at private preschools (OR = 2.60, 95%CI 1.12, 6.06). Children who started preschool at the age of six were more likely to obtain lower than average VMI scores than those who started at an earlier age (OR = 4.66, 95%CI 1.97, 11.04). Low maternal education level was also associated with lower than average VMI score (OR = 2.60, 95%CI 1.12, 6.06). Malaysian preschoolers' Beery-VMI performance compared well to their US counterparts. Some socioeconomic factors were associated with reduced VMI scores. Those from disadvantaged socioeconomic backgrounds are more likely to have reduced VMI performance, potentially adversely affecting their school readiness, cognitive performance, and future academic achievements.
