Stinging trees from Australasia produce remarkably persistent and painful stings upon contact of their stiff epidermal hairs, called trichomes, with mammalian skin. <i>Dendrocnide</i>-induced acute pain typically lasts for several hours, and intermittent painful flares can persist for days and weeks.
