Abasic (AP) sites are one of the most frequently occurring types of DNA damage. They lead to DNA strand breaks, interstrand DNA crosslinks, and block transcription and replication. Mutagenicity of AP sites arises from translesion synthesis (TLS) by error-prone bypass polymerases.
