irtplay: An R Package for Online Item Calibration, Scoring, Evaluation of Model Fit, and Useful Functions for Unidimensional IRT.

ABSTRACT: The R package irtplay provides practical tools for unidimensional item response theory (IRT) models that conveniently enable users to conduct many analyses related to IRT. For example, the irtplay includes functions for calibrating online items, scoring test-takers' proficiencies, evaluating IRT model-data fit, and importing item and/or proficiency parameter estimates from the output of popular IRT software. In addition, the irtplay package supports mixed-item formats consisting of dichotomous and polytomous items.

After Differential Item Functioning Is Detected: IRT Item Calibration and Scoring in the Presence of DIF.

Project description:Researchers are commonly interested in group comparisons such as comparisons of group means, called impact, or comparisons of individual scores across groups. A meaningful comparison can be made between the groups when there is no differential item functioning (DIF) or differential test functioning (DTF). During the past three decades, much progress has been made in detecting DIF and DTF. However, little research has been conducted on what researchers can do after such detection. This study presents and evaluates a confirmatory multigroup multidimensional item response model to obtain the purified item parameter estimates, person scores, and impact estimates on the primary dimension, controlling for the secondary dimension due to DIF. In addition, the item response model approach was compared with current practices of DIF treatment such as deleting and ignoring DIF items and using multigroup item response models through simulation studies. The authors suggested guidelines for DIF treatment based on the simulation study results.

Modified Item-Fit Indices for Dichotomous IRT Models with Missing Data.

Project description:Item-level fit analysis not only serves as a complementary check to global fit analysis, it is also essential in scale development because the fit results will guide item revision and/or deletion (Liu & Maydeu-Olivares, 2014). During data collection, missing response data may likely happen due to various reasons. Chi-square-based item fit indices (e.g., Yen's Q 1 , McKinley and Mill's G 2 , Orlando and Thissen's S-X 2 and S-G 2 ) are the most widely used statistics to assess item-level fit. However, the role of total scores with complete data used in S-X 2 and S-G 2 is different from that with incomplete data. As a result, S-X 2 and S-G 2 cannot handle incomplete data directly. To this end, we propose several modified versions of S-X 2 and S-G 2 to evaluate item-level fit when response data are incomplete, named as M impute -X 2 and M impute -G 2 , of which the subscript "impute" denotes different imputation methods. Instead of using observed total scores for grouping, the new indices rely on imputed total scores by either a single imputation method or three multiple imputation methods (i.e., two-way with normally distributed errors, corrected item-mean substitution with normally distributed errors and response function imputation). The new indices are equivalent to S-X 2 and S-G 2 when response data are complete. Their performances are evaluated and compared via simulation studies; the manipulated factors include test length, sources of misfit, misfit proportion, and missing proportion. The results from simulation studies are consistent with those of Orlando and Thissen (2000, 2003), and different indices are recommended under different conditions.

IRTGUI: An R Package for Unidimensional Item Response Theory Analysis With a Graphical User Interface.

Project description:In the last decade, many R packages were published to perform item response theory (IRT) analysis. Some researchers and practitioners have difficulty in using these functional tools because of their insufficient coding skills. The IRTGUI package provides these researchers a user-friendly GUI where they can perform unidimensional IRT analysis without coding skills. Using the IRTGUI package, person and item parameters, model and item fit indices can be obtained. Dimensionality and local independence assumptions can be tested. With the IRTGUI package, users can generate dichotomous data sets with customizable conditions. Also, Wright Maps, item characteristics and information curves can be graphically displayed. All outputs can be easily downloaded by users.

Online Item Calibration for Q-Matrix in CD-CAT.

Project description:Item replenishment is important for maintaining a large-scale item bank. In this article, the authors consider calibrating new items based on pre-calibrated operational items under the deterministic inputs, noisy-and-gate model, the specification of which includes the so-called Q -matrix, as well as the slipping and guessing parameters. Making use of the maximum likelihood and Bayesian estimators for the latent knowledge states, the authors propose two methods for the calibration. These methods are applicable to both traditional paper-pencil-based tests, for which the selection of operational items is prefixed, and computerized adaptive tests, for which the selection of operational items is sequential and random. Extensive simulations are done to assess and to compare the performance of these approaches. Extensions to other diagnostic classification models are also discussed.

Investigating the Practical Consequences of Model Misfit in Unidimensional IRT Models.

Project description:In this article, the practical consequences of violations of unidimensionality on selection decisions in the framework of unidimensional item response theory (IRT) models are investigated based on simulated data. The factors manipulated include the severity of violations, the proportion of misfitting items, and test length. The outcomes that were considered are the precision and accuracy of the estimated model parameters, the correlations of estimated ability ([Formula: see text]) and number-correct ([Formula: see text]) scores with the true ability ([Formula: see text]), the ranks of the examinees and the overlap between sets of examinees selected based on either [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text], or [Formula: see text] scores, and the bias in criterion-related validity estimates. Results show that the [Formula: see text] values were unbiased by violations of unidimensionality, but their precision decreased as multidimensionality and the proportion of misfitting items increased; the estimated item parameters were robust to violations of unidimensionality. The correlations between [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text], and [Formula: see text] scores, the agreement between the three selection criteria, and the accuracy of criterion-related validity estimates are all negatively affected, to some extent, by increasing levels of multidimensionality and the proportion of misfitting items. However, removing the misfitting items only improved the results in the case of severe multidimensionality and large proportion of misfitting items, and deteriorated them otherwise.

Evaluation of the Linear Composite Conjecture for Unidimensional IRT Scale for Multidimensional Responses.

Project description:The linear composite direction represents, theoretically, where the unidimensional scale would lie within a multidimensional latent space. Using compensatory multidimensional IRT, the linear composite can be derived from the structure of the items and the latent distribution. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the validity of the linear composite conjecture and examine how well a fitted unidimensional IRT model approximates the linear composite direction in a multidimensional latent space. Simulation experiment results overall show that the fitted unidimensional IRT model sufficiently approximates linear composite direction when correlation between bivariate latent variables is positive. When the correlation between bivariate latent variables is negative, instability occurs when the fitted unidimensional IRT model is used to approximate linear composite direction. A real data experiment was also conducted using 20 items from a multiple-choice mathematics test from American College Testing.

The irtQ R package: a user-friendly tool for item response theorybased test data analysis and calibration.

Project description:Computerized adaptive testing (CAT) has become a widely adopted test design for high-stakes licensing and certification exams, particularly in the health professions in the United States, due to its ability to tailor test difficulty in real time, reducing testing time while providing precise ability estimates. A key component of CAT is item response theory (IRT), which facilitates the dynamic selection of items based on examinees' ability levels during a test. Accurate estimation of item and ability parameters is essential for successful CAT implementation, necessitating convenient and reliable software to ensure precise parameter estimation. This paper introduces the irtQ R package (http://CRAN.R-project.org/), which simplifies IRTbased analysis and item calibration under unidimensional IRT models. While it does not directly simulate CAT, it provides essential tools to support CAT development, including parameter estimation using marginal maximum likelihood estimation via the expectation-maximization algorithm, pretest item calibration through fixed item parameter calibration and fixed ability parameter calibration methods, and examinee ability estimation. The package also enables users to compute item and test characteristic curves and information functions necessary for evaluating the psychometric properties of a test. This paper illustrates the key features of the irtQ package through examples using simulated datasets, demonstrating its utility in IRT applications such as test data analysis and ability scoring. By providing a user-friendly environment for IRT analysis, irtQ significantly enhances the capacity for efficient adaptive testing research and operations. Finally, the paper highlights additional core functionalities of irtQ, emphasizing its broader applicability to the development and operation of IRT-based assessments.

Analyzing the Fit of IRT Models With the Hausman Test.

Project description:In this manuscript, the applicability of the Hausman test to the evaluation of item response models is investigated. The Hausman test is a general test of model fit. The test assesses whether for a model in question the parameter estimates of two different estimators coincide. The test can be implemented for item response models by comparing the parameter estimates of the marginal maximum likelihood estimator with the corresponding parameter estimates of a limited information estimator. For a correctly specified item response model, the difference of the two estimates is normally distributed around zero. The Hausman test can be used for the evaluation of item fit and global model fit. The performance of the test is evaluated in a simulation study. The simulation study suggests that the implemented versions of the test adhere to the nominal Type-I error rate well in samples of 1000 test takers and more. The test is also capable to detect misspecified item characteristic functions, but lacks power to detect violations of the conditional independence assumption.

Fit Indices for Measurement Invariance Tests in the Thurstonian IRT Model.

Project description:This study examined whether cutoffs in fit indices suggested for traditional formats with maximum likelihood estimators can be utilized to assess model fit and to test measurement invariance when a multiple group confirmatory factor analysis was employed for the Thurstonian item response theory (IRT) model. Regarding the performance of the evaluation criteria, detection of measurement non-invariance and Type I error rates were examined. The impact of measurement non-invariance on estimated scores in the Thurstonian IRT model was also examined through accuracy and efficiency in score estimation. The fit indices used for the evaluation of model fit performed well. Among six cutoffs for changes in model fit indices, only ΔCFI > .01 and ΔNCI > .02 detected metric non-invariance when the medium magnitude of non-invariance occurred and none of the cutoffs performed well to detect scalar non-invariance. Based on the generated sampling distributions of fit index differences, this study suggested ΔCFI > .001 and ΔNCI > .004 for scalar non-invariance and ΔCFI > .007 for metric non-invariance. Considering Type I error rate control and detection rates of measurement non-invariance, ΔCFI was recommended for measurement non-invariance tests for forced-choice format data. Challenges in measurement non-invariance tests in the Thurstonian IRT model were discussed along with the direction for future research to enhance the utility of forced-choice formats in test development for cross-cultural and international settings.

Comparing Simple Scoring With IRT Scoring of Personality Measures: The Navy Computer Adaptive Personality Scales.

Project description:This article analyzes data from U.S. Navy sailors (N = 8,956), with the central measure being the Navy Computer Adaptive Personality Scales (NCAPS). Analyses and results from this article extend and qualify those from previous research efforts by examining the properties of the NCAPS and its adaptive structure in more detail. Specifically, this article examines item exposure rates, the efficiency of item use based on item response theory (IRT)-based Expected A Posteriori (EAP) scoring, and a comparison of IRT-EAP scoring with much more parsimonious scoring methods that appear to work just as well (stem-level scoring and dichotomous scoring). The cutting-edge nature of adaptive personality testing will necessitate a series of future efforts like this: to examine the benefits of adaptive scoring schemes and novel measurement methods continually, while pushing testing technology further ahead.
