Project description:Current policies and interventions to enhance student success and retention are often tied to full-time enrollment, which are substantiated by studies associating part-time enrollment with lower retention and poorer academic outcomes. However, these findings are limited to studies of first-time college students and do not represent today's nontraditional undergraduate who may be transfer, online, and working adult students. To enhance retention of on-campus and hybrid online 2 + 2 transfer students in a STEM undergraduate program, need-based scholarships are awarded to students enrolled full-time as stipulated by the federal granting agency. Although the scholarship has helped >80 students to date, over 40% of eligible transfer students are excluded only because they are enrolled part-time, disproportionately affecting students in the hybrid online track who are more likely to be women and underrepresented minorities. Using quantitative and qualitative methods, this study explores enrollment behavior of transfer students (online and on-campus), its relationship with student characteristics and academic outcomes, and implications for scholarship eligibility. Full-time enrollment is a significant challenge for transfer students. While scholarship requirements are a key factor influencing full-time enrollment, online transfer students additionally cite work and family obligations as drivers of enrollment behavior. Thus, online 2 + 2 transfer students face different challenges than on-campus peers and are more likely to enroll part-time out of necessity, yet still have comparable GPA and graduation rates. These findings support a growing awareness of barriers nontraditional students face questioning the relevance of policies driven by "traditional" student outcomes, which perpetuate inequity in higher education.Supplementary informationThe online version contains supplementary material available at 10.1007/s10755-021-09549-7.
Project description:Assessing scholarly influence is critical for understanding the collective system of scholarship and the history of academic inquiry. Influence is multifaceted, and citations reveal only part of it. Citation counts exhibit preferential attachment and follow a rigid "news cycle" that can miss sustained and indirect forms of influence. Building on dynamic topic models that track distributional shifts in discourse over time, we introduce a variant that incorporates features, such as authorship, affiliation, and publication venue, to assess how these contexts interact with content to shape future scholarship. We perform in-depth analyses on collections of physics research (500,000 abstracts; 102 years) and scholarship generally (JSTOR repository: 2 million full-text articles; 130 years). Our measure of document influence helps predict citations and shows how outcomes, such as winning a Nobel Prize or affiliation with a highly ranked institution, boost influence. Analysis of citations alongside discursive influence reveals that citations tend to credit authors who persist in their fields over time and discount credit for works that are influential over many topics or are "ahead of their time." In this way, our measures provide a way to acknowledge diverse contributions that take longer and travel farther to achieve scholarly appreciation, enabling us to correct citation biases and enhance sensitivity to the full spectrum of scholarly impact.
Project description:To explore the role of genetic association studies in risk assessment for common complex diseases.An introduction to the types of genetic association studies is followed by a discussion of their potential use in risk assessment for age-related macular degeneration and type 2 diabetes mellitus. The benefits and limitations of this burgeoning technology are explored and related to nursing practice and scholarship.Nurses in practice must be prepared to assist clients with decisions about seeking and interpreting results from genetic association studies and nurse researchers must apply current guidelines for conducting robust studies and applying the results of such studies in clinical practice.Data collected from genetic association studies will increasingly be used to identify novel prevention and treatment strategies for many complex diseases. An understanding of the principles that underlie this new science is essential for nurses in all areas of clinical practice as they design, test, and implement appropriate intervention and prevention strategies based on genetic association studies.
Project description:IntroductionAs scholarship moves into the digital sphere, applicant and promotion and tenure (P&T) committee members lack formal guidance on evaluating the impact of digital scholarly work. The P&T process requires the appraisal of individual scholarly impact in comparison to scholars across institutions and disciplines. As dissemination methods evolve in the digital era, we must adapt traditional P&T processes to include emerging forms of digital scholarship.MethodsWe conducted a blended, expert consensus procedure using a nominal group process to create a consensus document at the Council of Emergency Medicine Residency Directors Academic Assembly on April 1, 2019.ResultsWe discussed consensus guidelines for evaluation and promotion of digital scholarship with the intent to develop specific, evidence-supported recommendations to P&T committees and applicants. These recommendations included the following: demonstrate scholarship criteria; provide external evidence of impact; and include digital peer-review roles. As traditional scholarship continues to evolve within the digital realm, academic medicine should adapt how that scholarship is evaluated. P&T committees in academic medicine are at the epicenter for supporting this changing paradigm in scholarship.ConclusionP&T committees can critically appraise the quality and impact of digital scholarship using specific, validated tools. Applicants for appointment and promotion should highlight and prepare their digital scholarship to specifically address quality, impact, breadth, and relevance. It is our goal to provide specific, timely guidance for both stakeholders to recognize the value of digital scholarship in advancing our field.
Project description:Introduction:Service in the community and academic medicine are often seen by trainees as unrelated. This may be one reason for the lack of faculty diversity and the declining interest in academic medicine among new trainees. Methods:We developed an educational workshop through the application of the Kern model to help medical students and residents understand the relationship between community service work and scholarship as it pertains to a career in academic medicine. Specifically, the workshop helped trainees (1) understand the terms service and scholarship, (2) understand the benefits of achieving community service scholarship, and (3) identify steps to achieve community service scholarship through mock cases and personal stories. Results:The workshop was implemented at five conferences with a total of 139 trainees. Results of a paired-samples t test of learners' responses pre- and postworkshop showed statistically significant growth in their confidence to publish service-related work, as well as more positive agreement with the notion that community service work aligns with an academic medicine career. Discussion:This effective module can help trainees understand how community service and academic medicine are aligned, and raise their confidence in building a foundation for an academic medicine career through conducting community service scholarship.
Project description:Physicians in training are often taught how to conduct original research but may lack the skills necessary to write their results in a paper for the peer-reviewed medical literature. To help our critical care fellows increase their publication rates, we implemented an 8-hour scientific writing course that provides a structured approach to writing an academic research paper. We have demonstrated an increase in publication rate during fellowship from an average of 0.7 manuscripts per fellow just before course inception to 3.7 manuscripts per fellow in the current graduating class. We highlight strategies for developing a writing course aligned with adult learning theory within three key areas: planning, pedagogy, and implementation. Planning strategies center around creating a case for change, including multiple stakeholders with diverse backgrounds, including the research mentor, and ensuring accountability among stakeholders. Pedagogical strategies focus on harnessing the power of experiential learning, considering a flipped classroom approach, and peer teaching to leverage social and cognitive congruence. Implementation strategies include breaking down the writing process into manageable tasks, organizing the writing process according to learner needs, using peer review processes to drive learning, and celebrating the accomplishments of learners within the course. These strategies represent broad initiatives that can be tailored to local training needs and instituted across a wide variety of teaching platforms.
Project description:The purpose of this article is to describe the design of a unique, bilingual (English and French) Master of Applied Sciences (M.Sc.) in Anatomical Sciences Education (ASE) program at a Canadian postsecondary institution. Anatomy is a core foundational discipline that is essential to many undergraduate, graduate, and professional programs in the health sciences. However, the number of new individuals with the necessary knowledge base and the pedagogical training to teach cadaveric anatomy are in short supply and cannot satisfy the number of openings for trained educators in the field. The M.Sc. in ASE was created to meet the increasingly critical need for instructors trained in human anatomy. The program is designed to prepare students for a career teaching human anatomy to students in the health sciences, emphasizing hands-on cadaveric dissection. Moreover, this program aims to develop educational scholarship skills in trainees by leveraging faculty expertise in medical education research, particularly in the field of anatomy education research. This focus on scholarships will make graduates more competitive for future faculty positions. During their first year of the program, learners will develop clinically relevant anatomy knowledge, teaching skills, and anatomy education scholarship. In the second year, students will benefit from an immediate, hands-on application of this acquired knowledge. In the same year, students will serve as anatomy teachers in the faculty's Medical Program and conduct their education scholarship projects, culminating in a formal research paper. Although similar programs have been developed in recent years, this article provides the first description of the creation of a graduate program in anatomy education. It includes needs assessment, program development, challenges faced, and lessons learned during the approval process. The article serves as a valuable resource for other institutions aspiring to develop similar initiatives.
Project description:IntroductionRecent literature calls for initiatives to improve the quality of education studies and support faculty in approaching educational problems in a scholarly manner. Understanding the emergency medicine (EM) educator workforce is a crucial precursor to developing policies to support educators and promote education scholarship in EM. This study aims to illuminate the current workforce model for the academic EM educator.MethodsProgram leadership at EM training programs completed an online survey consisting of multiple choice, completion, and free-response type items. We calculated and reported descriptive statistics.Results112 programs participated. Mean number of core faculty/program: 16.02 ± 7.83 [14.53-17.5]. Mean number of faculty full-time equivalents (FTEs)/program dedicated to education is 6.92 ± 4.92 [5.87-7.98], including (mean FTE): Vice chair for education (0.25); director of medical education (0.13); education fellowship director (0.2); residency program director (0.83); associate residency director (0.94); assistant residency director (1.1); medical student clerkship director (0.8); assistant/associate clerkship director (0.28); simulation fellowship director (0.11); simulation director (0.42); director of faculty development (0.13). Mean number of FTEs/program for education administrative support is 2.34 ± 1.1 [2.13-2.61]. Determination of clinical hours varied; 38.75% of programs had personnel with education research expertise.ConclusionEducation faculty represent about 43% of the core faculty workforce. Many programs do not have the full spectrum of education leadership roles and educational faculty divide their time among multiple important academic roles. Clinical requirements vary. Many departments lack personnel with expertise in education research. This information may inform interventions to promote education scholarship.
Project description:BackgroundEngaged scholarship includes the coproduction and use of research by partnerships that blend research, policy and/or practice perspectives. This way of doing research attempts to bridge-the-gap between knowledge and its application. Recent reviews have described practices that support engagement and involve the community in research and patients in healthcare but there is less known about how to engage individuals working to inform public policy.Aims and objectivesThe purpose of this research was to articulate the actions and context that support the coproduction and use of research to inform public policy decisions. The study focuses on partnerships between researchers and stakeholders working in public policy across different levels and sectors of government.MethodsA scoping review methodology was used. Relevant articles were identified from six electronic bibliographic databases of peer-reviewed literature.FindingsA total of 9904 articles were screened and 375 full-text articles were assessed for eligibility. The included 11 studies were from research partnerships internationally and described actions and contextual factors contributing to the coproduction and use of research to inform public policy. Key actions included facilitating frequent interactions with public policy stakeholders, joint planning for research, and collaboration to execute data collection and analysis. Contextual factors included clarity in responsibilities, prior relationships, and mutual respect for partner priorities and perspectives.ConclusionsKey actions and contextual factors were identified in this review and warrant further study to strengthen research-policy partnerships and their outcomes.
Project description:Open scholarship, such as the sharing of articles, code, data, and educational resources, has the potential to improve university research and education as well as increase the impact universities can have beyond their own walls. To support this perspective, I present evidence from case studies, published literature, and personal experiences as a practicing open scholar. I describe some of the challenges inherent to practicing open scholarship and some of the tensions created by incompatibilities between institutional policies and personal practice. To address this, I propose several concrete actions universities could take to support open scholarship and outline ways in which such initiatives could benefit the public as well as institutions. Importantly, I do not think most of these actions would require new funding but rather a redistribution of existing funds and a rewriting of internal policies to better align with university missions of knowledge dissemination and societal impact.
